I understand the old processor, AF and other limitations but no touchscreen is just dumb in this day and age. Canon did not even save $1 on this as touchscreens because the extra cost of a touchscreen is negligible. It's purely a product segmentation move. Spend the extra $$ on the R50, a much better camera!
So this is basically an old M50 without the touchscreen and flip-out screen. I guess they had a lot of old parts in storage to try to get rid of. Smart Canon!
And the lens is much worse: 18-45 mm f/4.5-6.3 vs. 15-45 mm f/3.5-6.3. It has smaller aperture than many smart phones. Equivalent aperture is f/7.3 when Galaxy S23 Ultra has f/6.0. EOS M50 has f/5.7.
Hard to see how can it even compete against the a6100. For 80 more pounds you get the best AF among the budget cameras, way better lens selection, actually usable video, tilting screenand better wireless capabilities

The lack of a touch screen doesn't bother me but the lack of inbuilt sensor cleaning does. And that sensor would be helped by a faster kit lens, the 18-45mm is just too slow.
I have this camera and it's actually not bad at all. it doesnt have touchscreen but most sonys dont either. its good if u just want a fun camera thats powerful and small.

Sometimes, I wonder if Canon enjoy shooting themselves in the leg by underspeccing their gear. Really, the DSLR version of this camera (200d/250d) which is several years old now, had a rotatable touch screen. It also produced better quality images in low light quality for around the same price.
As a guy who bought 2000D last July, I don't understand why Canon even created this camera. It's basically like my 2000D with 4K video, dual pixel af and more focus points etc. But the fact they didn't include touch screen is kind of strange. Yea, of course I would change my 2000D to R100, but I don't think it's worth it to make the switch now. I would but a R50 straight or some more expensive R camera. But for now, the 2000D (Rebel T7) is fine. Just trying to save some money to buy a good astrophotography lens for it. What do you people here think: Should I keep investing in new lenses or seriously consider switching to mirrorrless camera maybe next year? I already know pretty much every important factor about photography and only bought the 2000D because of my budget.
It exists for the same reason the 2000D exists. It's a basic "first camera" for people who want to get their feet wet, but for the RF system instead. If you already have a 2000D, it probably doesn't really make that much sense.

@@mbismbismb gyroscope-based, physical stabilizer is a thing, but e-stabilizer can be added in a post anyway (could be better with some tweaks). So it's still fall into limitation, not crippled because we still have a workaround. The buttons on A6400 are more than enough, be familiar about buttons placement (especially custom buttons), and then train your eyes to be always on the scene. That's why top LCD is a thing on some higher-end cameras, quick glance and eyes goes back to the field. We can't use touchscreen anyway when using glove. That's because one second is enough to lost your moment. Good luck.
@@Durio_zibethinus nah i hv friends who has their sony buttons broken, with no touch screen option available u are left with no option to navigate around the menu beside sending it to sony service center and if u unlucky enuf if the model is discontinue good luck u have to wait sony to order it from its plant and japan in my friend's case during covid era and it took up to more than 6 months... sony is inpractical but its been infamous for their shitty after sales service , happened to xperia phone and vaio too in the past
8/31/2024 I ordered one at $299. Compared to what I paid 20 years ago when I purchased the 300D and 350D for around 1K, it is leagues better. I have other Pro and Prosumers bodies so this isn't my sole cameras but this camera will remind me to what it was to shoot 20 years ago.
Maybe canon just want to use up the leftover processor from the previous generation. TBH, I dont mind buying this camera if it priced 400 USD, just like the older entry level dslr.
same procie but oddly there was a comparison that it performed slightly better in low light compared to m50. depending on what country your in, m50's used still cost more than a new r100 with a new mount. they already discontinued making m-mounts.
This is a far better camera. Bigger and better sensor and wayyyyyy better AF system etc.... The SX70 is a turd of a camera. The Panasonic FZ cameras are much better if you want an ultra zoom camera
Very fair review I think. To me it seems the specs of the R100 are very similar to the Canon 1500D which was released about 5 yrs. ago And Canon also introduced the 3000D with no diopter adjustment. And I bet the screen of the R100 is a lot less visible in bright sun than even quite old iphones.
it's a stripped out m50 (same processor/sensor) but tweaked better to perform slightly better based on the reviews and photo comparison. It is cheaper than used m50 which almost cost like a new zv-e10 (depends on what country), it does have screen brightness adjustment when shooting in bright sun
These affordable camera could make so much more sense if Canon wasn't so salty about third party lenses upd. they should've remove evf completely and put flip up touch screen instead, like in Canon M6

I have the R10 and I really like it. I think it's the sweet spot for RF APS-C: fully articulating screen, AF joystick, two control dials, excellent autofocus and high frame rate. I have the 18-150. It's plasticky but very sharp. Then I also use the RF 16mm and 50mm primes for a wide angle walk-around and a nice portrait lens. I imagine Canon will come out with an ultrawide at some point, but you can always adapt the excellent 10-18 EF-S lens.

Canon hates poor people gives you bare minimum 😞. Actually why bother with Canon UK? £600 what a joke!!! I was done buying UK Canon cameras a few yrs back after 20yrs of Canon pro cams. You can get for £549 a R50 that's totally light years ahead of that joke camera with a 3 yr uk warranty from grey market. Why restrict yourself by the time you buy a decent lens just switch brands and get a better deal.

considering its price range $300-$350 and recentness the closest camera would be a Sony ZV-1f a touchscreen, flipped out, but non interchangeable lens. most newer cameras would sell more than $600 and if you have money why even bother with this. I had the chance to borrow one & honestly, I loved the design and how compact it is. I had it side-to-side with my m50 and it's a good edc cam if paired with small lenses. a used m50 still cost more than this camera (new). I got curious and saw a review that it has been tweaked to slightly outperform the m50 in terms of image esp. low light. who is this for? people who just want to own a camera better than their current smartphone, touchscreen wouldn't be an issue since they will likely just shoot in auto but also want to have manual controls, casual shooters, people on a very tight budget, people on a very tight budget but want a "new camera (also latest mount since m mount is discontinued)". otherwise most people who's serious about photography would likely just go to buy used camera's that have better specs for the same money.
This camera is just about perfect for being in a fanny pack while on vacation. It's better than your smart phone (mostly) and in capable hands it will get the job done. It gets you into the RF system and the price isn't too bad. It's not *MY* first choice but I'm not a tourist on vacation at Disneyland. It has a very "my first camera" feel to it. But that's okay. That's what cameras like this are for.
@el_fucko I'm biased against touch screens. I have huge hands and the buttons are tiny. This is an okay camera, not a total miss but not a hit either. It's a T7 with an RF mount and eye detect autofocus. But the AF is the only reason to get this rather than a used T7i other than it's RF mount.
What I hate the most about this camera is the screen is NOT center. Its not a touch screen which is dumb already but its also not centered. This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen Canon release and I have been a Canon shooter for 20+ years now.
How tf do you move your focus point if there's no joystick or touch screen? You just pray to the autofocus gods that what you want to be in focus will be magically selected? yikes

2023 and it has no flip screen or external mic input. Who exactly are they aiming this at? For sure not young people being weaned off iPhones. Older vacationers looking to lighten their carry on bag? Maybe. Then there's the S.O.P. Canon menu nightmare. Buy a used M50.
A little piece of cr*p from Canon. They only needed to leave the touchscreen, and it wouldn't have been a full miss. But they wanted hard to make a 4000D wannabe. Basically something that people can be deceived into buying, at a Best Buy or other similar physical stores. An M50 mk II, with slighly upgraded autofocus, but with no touchscreen and with a fixed screen. If you're ok without the little cr*ppy .59x magnification EVF, the Sony ZV-E10 crushes this in all ways except for subject detection for birds, and people's backs. The ZV-E10 is better in IQ and AF in low light, than the Canon R50 anyway... Regarding the controlability, even the R50, outside of its touchscreen, is very low controlability and configurability. The Canon R10 is the lowest-specced, but very decent camera in controlability, from Canon.
@@JaySilva88 There are 3 lenses designed for RF APS-C and all three are slow zooms. If you're looking at expensive FF lenses, then you should have the money for a FF sensor camera. Why would you want adapted lenses with poor AF performance and outdated lens designs when there are awesome APS-C and even M4/3 systems with fully fleshed out native lens lineups available? Canon RF APS-C is simply the stupidist camera body anyone could choose right now.
M200 is superior, it has a working auto white balance and not the one that produces orange on artificial light. But there is no future in M-series. You essentially are just stuck with the kit lens and then it would be better to get a PowerShot.

For more than the price of an EOS RP (Saw one selling at cex for 420 quid) this camera makes no sense to buy

Wise choice. Better Lens is always the solution. Eventually in future you will get a new camera. But for now better to invest in lens

I certainly wouldn't recommend this or any of their APS-C cameras until they open up the mount for third party crop lenses.

you cant make a recommendation on something you havent used. most people arent looking to buy a 100 other lenses. 2 or 3 is enough for most.

Funnily the body of 3000d and this R100 being sold the same price in my country. It's no brainer to go for the R100

R100? Is there any logic to canons numerical designations? 😆
The smaller the number the better the camera. It has always been so. M100 was the cheapest M-series camera.
The bigger the number the more features that have been stripped out. For example the Canon 3000D with no diopter adjustment😂
considering its price range $300-$350 and recentness the closest camera would be a Sony ZV-1f a touchscreen, flipped out, but non interchangeable lens. most newer cameras would sell more than $600 and if you have money why even bother with this. I had the chance to borrow one & honestly, I loved the design and how compact it is. I had it side-to-side with my m50 and it's a good edc cam if paired with small lenses. a used m50 still cost more than this camera (new). I got curious and saw a review that it has been tweaked to slightly outperform the m50 in terms of image esp. low light.
who is this for? people who just want to own a camera better than their current smartphone, touchscreen wouldn't be an issue since they will likely just shoot in auto but also want to have manual controls, casual shooters, people on a very tight budget, people on a very tight budget but want a "new camera (also latest mount since m mount is discontinued)". otherwise most people who's serious about photography would likely just go to buy used camera's that have better specs for the same money.

This camera is just about perfect for being in a fanny pack while on vacation. It's better than your smart phone (mostly) and in capable hands it will get the job done. It gets you into the RF system and the price isn't too bad. It's not *MY* first choice but I'm not a tourist on vacation at Disneyland. It has a very "my first camera" feel to it. But that's okay. That's what cameras like this are for.
See, I could be talked into agreeing with this, but making an entry-level camera without a touchscreen is just completely harebrained.
@el_fucko I'm biased against touch screens. I have huge hands and the buttons are tiny. This is an okay camera, not a total miss but not a hit either. It's a T7 with an RF mount and eye detect autofocus. But the AF is the only reason to get this rather than a used T7i other than it's RF mount.

What I hate the most about this camera is the screen is NOT center. Its not a touch screen which is dumb already but its also not centered.
This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen Canon release and I have been a Canon shooter for 20+ years now.
How tf do you move your focus point if there's no joystick or touch screen? You just pray to the autofocus gods that what you want to be in focus will be magically selected? yikes
You can probably move it with the rear d-pad dial thing, like most cameras without a joystick.

2023 and it has no flip screen or external mic input. Who exactly are they aiming this at? For sure not young people being weaned off iPhones. Older vacationers looking to lighten their carry on bag? Maybe. Then there's the S.O.P. Canon menu nightmare. Buy a used M50.

A little piece of cr*p from Canon. They only needed to leave the touchscreen, and it wouldn't have been a full miss. But they wanted hard to make a 4000D wannabe.
Basically something that people can be deceived into buying, at a Best Buy or other similar physical stores. An M50 mk II, with slighly upgraded autofocus, but with no touchscreen and with a fixed screen.
If you're ok without the little cr*ppy .59x magnification EVF, the Sony ZV-E10 crushes this in all ways except for subject detection for birds, and people's backs.
The ZV-E10 is better in IQ and AF in low light, than the Canon R50 anyway...
Regarding the controlability, even the R50, outside of its touchscreen, is very low controlability and configurability. The Canon R10 is the lowest-specced, but very decent camera in controlability, from Canon.
It's a cute camera, but not much better than a phone. I'd say to anyone considering this to go straight to R50 or you'll be disappointed!
Get the R50 just to disappointed in the lack of lens options.
@@josh6499 there's plenty of RF glass, although expensive. You can always adapt good second hand EF glass and save thousands.
@@JaySilva88 There are 3 lenses designed for RF APS-C and all three are slow zooms. If you're looking at expensive FF lenses, then you should have the money for a FF sensor camera. Why would you want adapted lenses with poor AF performance and outdated lens designs when there are awesome APS-C and even M4/3 systems with fully fleshed out native lens lineups available?
Canon RF APS-C is simply the stupidist camera body anyone could choose right now.

M100 is very very good, yes
M200 is superior, it has a working auto white balance and not the one that produces orange on artificial light. But there is no future in M-series. You essentially are just stuck with the kit lens and then it would be better to get a PowerShot.
