  • In this video, we will talk about construction of house with bricks and construction of house with blocks. In various areas of Pakistan, houses are made with bricks whereas in some other locations houses are constructed in bricks. We will talk about pros and cons of bricks and concrete blocks in Pakistan.

Blocks are used all over the Middle East which has really hot and dry weather They have hollow spaces which provide excellent insulation.

Insulation is normally not used over here as the construction cost goes higher. Actually they are also shifting to dry wall in UAE

      Composition
Bricks: Typically made from clay or shale and hardened by firing in a kiln.
Blocks: Usually made from concrete (a mixture of cement, sand, gravel, and water), but can also be made from cinder (coal ash), aerated concrete, or other materials.
      Size
Bricks: Smaller and uniform in size, commonly about 2.25 x 3.75 x 8 inches.
Blocks: Larger, with common sizes like 8 x 8 x 16 inches, although sizes can vary.
      Weight
Bricks: Heavier per unit volume due to their density and smaller size.
Blocks: Generally lighter per unit volume, especially if made from aerated concrete or cinder.
      Strength
Bricks: Have good compressive strength but are limited by their smaller size and the method of production.
Blocks: Often stronger, especially those made from concrete, and can bear higher loads due to their larger size and reinforced structure.
      Thermal Insulation
Bricks: Provide decent thermal insulation but can be inferior to blocks.
Blocks: Generally provide better thermal insulation, particularly aerated concrete blocks which have air pockets that reduce heat transfer.
      Sound Insulation
Bricks: Offer good sound insulation due to their density.
Blocks: Can offer superior sound insulation, especially aerated and dense concrete blocks.
      Cost
Bricks: Usually more expensive on a per-unit basis but can be cheaper in total cost for small projects due to simpler installation.
Blocks: Often more economical for large projects due to lower material and labor costs per square foot of wall constructed.
      Construction Time
Bricks: Slower to build with due to their smaller size; requires more units to cover the same area.
Blocks: Faster to build with because of their larger size, covering more area with fewer units.
      Environmental Impact
Bricks: The firing process can produce significant emissions; however, they can be more sustainable if sourced locally.
Blocks: Concrete blocks have a high carbon footprint due to cement production. Aerated blocks can be more eco-friendly as they use less cement.
      Aesthetic and Finishing
Bricks: Offer a classic and aesthetically pleasing appearance; often used for visible exterior walls.
Blocks: Generally used for structural purposes and are often covered with other materials for aesthetic finish.
      Durability and Maintenance
Bricks: Highly durable and require minimal maintenance, resistant to weathering and pests.
Blocks: Also durable, but may require more maintenance depending on the material (e.g., aerated concrete blocks can be more susceptible to moisture).
      Structural Use
Bricks: Commonly used for non-load-bearing walls and veneers.
Blocks: Widely used for load-bearing walls and foundations due to their strength and larger size.
Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between bricks and blocks depends on the specific requirements of the construction project, such as budget, time constraints, and the desired properties of the final structure.

One block of 6x8x12 size block is equal to three bricks. Blocks cost less in laying due to lesser consumption for mortar and plaster.

Hollow blocks generally provide better thermal insulation compared to solid bricks due to the presence of air cavities that act as insulators.

Totally wrong information. Bricks make the structures more hot than blocks. And blocks are cost efficient not bricks
