Low Life version was under produced and Substance version was way, way overproduced. In fact their cover artist hated the Substance version so badly that he didn't feel the song was worthy of his talents, and that's why the vinyl version of this song is just black.

This is by far the best remix of the Subculture, one of the main reason by getting rid of the, " one of these days..." the most annoying line of the whole song.

Even now, after all these years, I wish they had turned those synths up at around the 5:55 mark - criminal to leave such a beautiful sound so low in the mix!
pyrtwist yes this version uses Bernard's vocals from the original LP version on Low-Life. So much more real sounding than the remix...I love this mix the best I bought the 1986 RM mag with the unplayed 45 attached for the article feature, cover and 45! Seriously amazingly deep song that doesn't appear to be at first few listens
This is NOT by John Robie. It's by a different guy (I think it's Razormaid) and commissoned with the band themselves. Robie's SubCulture remixes were the absolute pits - so bad that it's well known that their record sleeve designer Peter Saville refused to do a record cover for it and plumped for a plain black sleeve and type on the label only This earlier alternative version pisses all over those godawful hackneyed John Robie travesties.... god only knows what he was thinking coming up with such -kitchen sink remix techniques.
@@busterabcat The label of the RM single says it's by John Robie. However, the Discogs entry lists "Remix [Uncredited] - Joseph Watt" (of Razormaid) and says "Edit Of The Sarm West Remix (Razormaid)."

I first heard Sub Culture in 1985 and I was hooked on it from the instant. It's such an important Electronic Dance Record.
Love this version....but also the heavier louder more clubby versions. What a fantastic song. Im 59 and it makes all the memories come rushing back

I vividly remember that flexi disc. Which versions/mixes were on it? I only remember one version from it, closer to the 12" low remix I think
