The Pub That Got MAROONED in a Roundabout!

  • Today I visit the Shepherd and Flock Roundabout at Farnham, Surrey to investigate what is the largest inhabited roundabout in the UK! So whilst there’s no trade plate driving today, we’re instead having a look at a somewhat unique local landmark that I’ve always found strangely intriguing. It might not be the largest roundabout in the country, but it’s still big enough to live on. There’s also an unexpectedly peaceful and rural atmosphere on the roundabout, especially as you follow the bridlepath along Moor Park Lane along the route that monks would have taken from Bourne Mill to Waverley Abbey. The roundabout is a conservation area, and the Shepherd and Flock pub is a popular local pub with a friendly atmosphere and very good quality food. I enjoyed my cup of tea and fish finger sandwich, and there was plenty of it! You can even sit outside and watch the world go by on the roundabout.

    You learn something new every day! I’ve lived a few miles from this roundabout for over 50 years, driven round it thousands of times but had absolutely no idea there were houses on there, I thought it was just the pub. How did I miss that?! 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I used to live in Farnham and still go through here regularly. I think the access road is strictly speaking two very close slip roads. I think there used to be a painted line ‘separating’ them so you were never truly on the wrong side but it was probably even more confusing!

    Vicarage Road in Watford in Hertfordshire (Yes ! The football Vicarage Road) has been chopped into three by what was declared in the 1970s to be a one-way system but it is a lot smaller than your roundabout. You gain access or walk continuously along Vicarage Road crossing the one- way system using light controlled crossings. At the time, there were howls of protest from the shop-keepers which lined both sides, but both sides are still lined with shop and shop type premises. I haven't been in Watford for 50 years and I don't have any plans to EVER visit again, but thanks to Google Street view, I can report that the fine and thoroughly worthwhile establishments include, "Hin Garden Chinese", "Taste of the Levant" (Arabic restaurant and bar) "Grilled Cottage", "Pizza Hot Express" "Gabriel's Restaurant and Bar", a sandwich emporium, "Evolve" (salon and Spa) two motor cycle shops, a place with plants for sale outside, a mobile phone shop and an optician.
    Fascinating video as always. Shame that the underpasses are so tatty.

    The Guildford bound A31 side got messed around with in the early 90's to turn it into dual carriageway and there's a long section of old A31 through Runfold that eventually emerges near the Hogs Back Hotel.

    Local to me. The road to The Savoy Hotel is referred to as the only place you drive on the wrong side of the road, and it's always annoyed me that the S&F roundabout is never mentioned as being the same.

    You say it's "the largest inhabited roundabout in the UK", but it's not. It's really a large one way system, and there's plenty of those which are bigger. One that is similar but bigger is on Coventry Road, Yardley, Birmingham.

    • @tradeplatetravels
      @tradeplatetravels  Před 17 dny

      We'll have to agree to disagree on that! There are roundabout roadsigns and signage as you approach it, and it's called a roundabout on maps, so as far as I'm concerned it is one :)

    Drive round this at least once a week, would love to exactly which year in the 1970s the roundabout was completed?

    • @tradeplatetravels
      @tradeplatetravels  Před 19 dny

      I tried to find out, but the best I could find was "in the 1970s"! Although I did find one source that suggested the roundabout might have been built, or at least building work started, in 1967.

    Trade plate related question - On some of your videos you have your trade plates stuck to the inside of the windscreen and rear window, but in your latest batch you have them attached by the plates on the outside. Is this a forced change and now going to be a requirement on all of your future deliveries and collections? I'm new to this job and the company want us to attach them to the outside, but drivers are concerned about losing them as the cost for replacement will fall on the driver. Strictly speaking, by law, they should be on the outside by the plates, but some of the old hands have said they have never had a problem over the years with them inside. I think in my short time on the road, I've only ever seen one vehicle with them on the outside.
    The traffic this last week has been a nightmare. I've been out for about 64 hours, but have probably only made between £250-300.😢 On the plus side, I've had some nice cars to drive.

    • @tradeplatetravels
      @tradeplatetravels  Před 19 dny

      Good question. I once got pulled over by the the police after my pickup truck pinged up on his computer as having no tax (because it was still in the motor trade). I had the plates clearly displayed in the window, inside, and he simply didn't see them. What he told me at the time was that they do prefer us to have the plates on the outside, but they also understand it's not always easy to do so on every vehicle. I offered to put them on the outside and he told me just to continue as I was. So he didn't seem to mind much. So overall I would say, whilst a lot of people have them on the inside, it's always going to be a risk and the DVLA do definitely state that the plates should be on the outside of the vehicle. So strictly speaking that's what we should do. It's a bit of a nightmare to be honest, they get covered in flies and debris for a start and my special clips don't fit onto number plates when you have that extra "lip" with the supplying dealer's name. I usually cable tie the trade plates on through their holes to make sure I don't lose them. Then the issue is you have to detach/reattach them every time you park up for a break! So I can understand why so many people, probably about 99% of drivers I see, just have them on the inside.

      @@tradeplatetravels Thanks for the reply. I've had numerous police cars pass me and not bat an eyelid. So hopefully things will still be ok. But there's bound to be an occassion down the line at some point. I try to make them as clear as possible, but I had one Merc where the rear windscreen was blacked out and it wasn't visible. I have a pack of cable ties now, but sometimes there is nowhere to tie them to. The rear of vans can be awkward at times. 🤷‍♂️
