- A brief history of the October 3rd and 4th battle also known as the Day of the Rangers. The battle was fought by forces of the United States supported by the United Nations Operation in Somalia II (UNOSOMII) and Somali militiamen loyal to Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

On this day, U.S. Army forces in Mogadishu attempted to seize two of Aidid’s high ranking lieutenants during a meeting in the capitol. After the attack, Somali militia and armed civilian forces shot down two American UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The succeeding raid that began as a one-hour operation to secure and recover the crews of both helicopters turned into an overnight battle in Mogadishu.
The battle resulted in the death of 24 Pakistanis, 19 U.S. soldiers, and 500‒1,000 Somalis. According to American sources, American forces suffered 18 deaths, 73 wounded, and one helicopter pilot captured. At least one Pakistani soldier and one Malaysian soldier were killed as part of the rescue forces. There are varied reports pointing to an estimated 1,500 to 3,000 Somali casualties, including civilians.

My oldman was E-20 LRRP in '68 and '69 before they rolled them into the newly reformed 75th, he said they were much more effective and deadly in 4-5 man teams as LRRPs. Rangers Lead the Way!
I served with the Charlie Rangers 1970-71. There was a Hansen in my platoon, but don't think that was your dad.
What really frustrates me is the fact that my unit 10th Mountain Division who played a MAJOR role in that operation was NOT mentioned.
@sourav sniper no, it was an infantry unit from the US ARMY 10th Mountain Division. And we were not mentioned in the movie. Not once. We sent in a rescue convoy to help get the wounded RANGERS out of the city and lost two men doing it. Research it. Im telling the truth.

Aidid's son was at the time a US Marine Corps Captain, he went on to lead the clan I heard.
A classmate of mine was there.
He was a Blackhawk pilot with the Nightstalkers.
Mikey G. was what I called him, he was a small quite kid in school.
He is the pilot that inserted the 2 snipers who gave their lives protecting another downed pilot.
His bird was hit but he made a crash landing back at the base.
After he was back home his wife demanded he get out, with the

He became a civilian helicopter test pilot and was killed in a test flight.
No other pilots from his unit died during what would have been his lifecycle of 20 years at max retirement.

27 years ago today. Thus began better asset integration and red dots, ACOGS, and eventually 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8 optics........and the often forgotten, but not by me, 1x10 LPVOs just coming out.
We still thought we were High Speed with Starlight Scopes and Gen 1 NV googles prior Operation Just Cause and Desert Shield/Storm...
A lot of problems were exposed in that operation.

I guess you're right. The operational plan and logistics support were a failure and it shows at the outset of the operation when they deployed to an airfield lacking water. They forgot to plan for the "what if" the operation takes longer than expected and need to remain on the ground longer than planned? How do we get resupply on time? One could list several things that apparently were ignored.
They underestimated nothing and knew the dangers but proceeded anyways as the rangers are an almost unmatched fighting force. They were left to clean up the scraps. Dirty business but business as usual.

This operation made no sense at all. Plus, the general who planned this had no plan in case anything went wrong. It is called "Plan B".
@@genekelly8467 That’s what it means to be arrogant. When you have a Plan A and then your Plan B is ‘Refer to Plan A’. MG Garrison knew he screwed up bad and took the blame. He retired the day after Aidid was captured/died in ‘96. It was like he waited until his nemesis was off the table. The ONLY good thing that came out of this was what was learned from it. Now when things are planned and it’s only supposed to take an hour, they plan for a day.

With all respect to the United States military this operation was a complete SNAFU from the outset, it wasn’t that the plan was completely poor, it wasn’t, but I think a sense of superiority or invisibility, as soon as the forces entered the city the plan went wrong and could not be stopped, so the only way out was to try and complete the mission, as the narration stated there wasn’t any contingency plan, the troops had to improvise adapt and overcome...........AND THEY CERTAINLY DID THAT, WITH SKILL DETERMINATION AND A DOSE OF LUCK, as all fighting forces need. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴
While the soldiers behaved in accordance with the highest traditions of the service, this was an operational command fiasco and the officers in charge bear a large portion of the responsibility. Their superiors who sent them out without enough forces and with restrictive rules of engagement are also responsible for this mess.
As for the Somalis, if you were old enough at the time to be aware of the situation in their country it was obvious that the men with guns there were murderous gangsters. Remember, the only reason the UN was there (which included the Americans) was to prevent Aidid and his thugs from seizing the food supplies intended for starving and dying Somalis. Their bestial behavior towards dead and captive Americans shows this. They got what they were asking for. Not enough, though. One of their supporters emigrated here, under false pretenses, and is now a power in Congress, in one of our major political parties, and powerful nationwide with Americans who seem to model their behavior on Somali thugs.

It was orchestrated to be a blood bath to make a recruiting movie to get more people in support of GWOT. These politicians play 4-D Chess. We trained BinnLaden to shoot down helicopters. We sent him down to Somolia to train the people to shoot down our Rangers. There is much more to this story than gets told outside of Ft Benning.
Yes it was a daylight raid. They would have preferred to do the op at night, yes, but you have to hunt deer where the deer are. The intel was accurate, senior Aideed advisors were there, and captured. But because 2 helos were shot down, the elements had to stay in the target area longer than anyone wanted to. Night Stalkers Don’t Quit. Rangers Lead the Way. The only failure, is the failure to try.
