The Nashville Grand Prix was a Mess Again...

- This time last year I covered the 2021 Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, which went on to be by most viewed video to date. That race was a mess with 9 cautions and this years sequel was not much better... here are my thoughts...

If only green laps were counted, it could be known as the 12 hours of Nashville. 36 out of 80 laps were run under yellow
Yikes 😂😅
hahaha
That's a damning statistic!
That's 55% of the race under green. What an embarrassment
@@FP1Will I feel like this track is a mix between Baku and Monaco. Monaco because it is tight and punishing, and Baku because it is fast
The icing on the cake was if you tried to watch this in America. In many places, NBC dropped the coverage mid race for the local news. Unless you had CNBC, or their streaming service, you were missing the end of the race.
So you missed the only bit of actual racing lmao
The glory of NBC's coverage of car racing. Whether it's Indy cars or NASCAR, it's just a mess. Like punting a NASCAR race off of USA and putting it on their streaming service only cause of a weather delay. This after going from NBC to USA, because of a weather delay.
At least local news can somewhat interesting, where I was and a good amount of other places got infomercials instead, the boring kind where its just the same thing on repeat for two hours
Yeah, this totally negated the entire point of using a DVR, No one told my DVR to change to channels. Either cover the race or don't. if you're worried about it running long, put it on CNBC from the start. I missed the entire last half of racing under yellow flags.
It was just a good thing I was watching it on Peacock the entire time. And here's my review on the race
czcams.com/video/VtVMRYHc9r0/video.html
I will defend it this time, it was a fun shitshow unlike last year. Every wreck generated Beef, and it was the closest street course finish in history
Most of the crashes this time were the result of on-track battling for position, rather than just drivers making mistakes they should know better about. That alone puts it ahead of last year.
This track was pretty technical and overtaking was plenty, the problem was the bumps on the road and it needs to be fixed.
@Connor Gedye someone put 2+2 together and got 10
@@youngrody2386 They need to fix all the roads in nashville lmao
@@novai6554 One more pothole and nashville would give us what a street course in india would feel like lmao
I begin to suspect that we will not return after 2023 to these particular set of streets. Although they are (somewhat) entertaining for the fans, I simply can't imagine any of the team-owners being all too pleased with a demolition derby on the schedule.
PS: I felt the same of wanting to go to sleep but this race not willing to end.
That is my opinion as well. Why this track layout? It looks like something that someone would come up with in the Design the Track Configuration section playing Checkered Flag Legends on PS3 (not a real game but people get the idea). There is a way to change the street layout configuration for the race and still make this a good race and still have the bridge going both ways. I have been to that area many times. They have the space to do this as well as incorporate some hills into the course. Make the parts outside of the bridge not so tight and I think they have a winner. Keep it status quo and this race will go the way of the dodo.
@@scsmith4604 "Checker Flag Legends" absolutely floored me
Nashville's layout is like a plagiarized F1 Miami carbon copy. Hmmm, not sure why that was copied.
why cant they open up these tight corners ?
Nashville’s track was created before Miami’s.
I saw the race and my first thought was Will is gonna love this
hahahaha indeed I did!
Sat through this whole day at the event. The GT America and Indy lights races were great races and the track works for those cars. But the Indy race became a race restart sim and was dreadful
I'd imagine it would be if you were there in person. On TV the chaos is entertaining, but it may have been just a little _too_ chaotic. Next year it would be nice if the drivers could chill out a bit and for the organizers to make some tweaks to the track.
In your casual opinion: is the track better suited to the other race types, or was it just a matter of bad luck (again)?
Me before the second race of this track: I'm sure they will clean up the crashes this time around.
Me after the second race: this is a cursed track
I like the crashfest. This gives specialty to the race. Nashville is the place where you just have to survive, dont do anything stupid, avoid everybody else. Nashville is also proves that the indycar calendar is the most versatile in any motorsport.
If you enjoyed that, I will be painting my deck this weekend. You are welcome to come watch it dry, no charge.
so the indy race is like driving in traffic here too huh? nice.
I bet that in the 2023 music city gp, there will be a car in the water at some point, either by treacherous weather or the stupidity of the drivers.
Not gonna lie...I don't think I'll be happy until someone goes flying off that bridge.
I like the endless tension of those tight corners.
“with everything looking to age well” 🤣🤣 excellent line
Love the long straights into Baku castle corners. What a race 🏁 keep up this awesome content
Thank you man!
This race proves that last year wasn't a one off. Time to move the layout to a different set of streets or just add another oval by returning to the Nashville Superspeedway.
yeah im all for an exciting race with a few crashes, but nashville has gone a bit overboard on that front...
I'd much rather have the street layout changed somehow instead of moving the race to Lebenon. I would lose all interest if they raced out there. I don't know how they can fix it, but something needs to be done.
@@FP1Will a bit overboard?
Nashville Speedway has that PJ1 compound. So, it's not the best option, as much as I'd like to see another oval on the schedule.
the superspeedway is ridiculously bumpy as well in an indycar. it's a concrete track. i did it at 140 MPH and you bump the entire way around, really bad coming out of 2 onto the back straight. i'm sure at 215 with no power steering it's unbearable.
Romain got robbed. Joey N thought he was playing forza and yeeted it up the inside.
Great video! As always it's nice as an American who grew up watching Indy cars, to see what people outside the US think about it. I had pretty much no expectations it wouldn't be the same mess it was last year. Because, it's pretty much the same track. Also a thing with Indy in Nashville, is the scheduling. Nashville in August can be a bit warm and humid. Like, inside of a sauna warm and humid. But at least it's not in a parking lot like a certain Miami race.
Exactly, they need to do a better job with scheduling the races revolving around the weather. A lot of the USA can be a challenge in summer but there are strategies that can be implemented. I would have Laguna Seca in August as an example because the Monterey Peninsula's weather is good most of the time. Maybe change Long Beach too. The weather is great there year-round as well. Detroit in the summer is manageable usually (this year is an issue) and so is Road America but Mid Ohio in the summer can be a challenge.
some of it /is/ in the parking lot of the Nissan Stadium here. turns 9/10/11, finish line, chicane, victory circle and all of the paddock is in the parking lot for the stadium
@@scsmith4604 that would work. Though Long Beach has been an early season race for so long, that moving it might jostle some feelings. Also like I know part of Nashville in summer is it's the meat of the tourist season. Which I get, it can be something people make a trip for. But then scheduling has always involved races at locations during not ideal times of the year.
A bit warm and humid? lol
@@L4rceny I mean it's not exactly as bad as the Gulf coast lol
OH GOD HERE WE GO AGAIN.
ROUND 1-FAILER
ROUND 2-FAILER
can't lie, i've been looking forward to nashville all season, seen a lot of people wanting it gone off the schedule but i honestly love it, issues and all 😭
I don't see it going anywhere yet they make way to much money to just remove it maybe if they start losing money but they won't be for a while Nashville is becoming the new veges
Everytime I think about watching an indy car race and I don't it turns out to be a banger of a race 😑
Did you see either of the Stadium Super Trucks races in Nashville? Absolutely wild!
Jimmy Johnsons final crash was almost identical to his crash from last year.
The only difference seemed to be the final resting point of his car.
we have stadium trucks here too??? 1st i didnt know bout indy and now this!?
@@bellasclips5652 Yep, they usually run 2 races a weekend and it's almost always streamed lived on the SST CZcams channel.
Being a Jimmie Johnson fan is pain
FR bro. I’m still sad his suspension couldn’t hold on for a few more laps.
I wished IndyCar and IMSA would return to Baltimore, MD Washington, MD, Houston, TX, Miami, FL, and New Orleans, LA where the NHL-NBA Arenas, MLS-NFL-MLB Stadiums have their NBA World Championships, Stanley Cup, World Series, MLS Cup, and SuperBowl
It’s great to finally find someone who is covering indycar races on CZcams. As might be obvious by my picture, I am a Nashville native and so I saw this race in person. The wrecking was awful and I really hope that they can find a solution before Nashville has to lose our Grand Prix (we do have a couple of real tracks they could use but I don’t know if it would be the same downtown music festival that the race is sold as).
Two untold stories of this race were the endless instances of Colton Herta and Felix Rosenqvist having to claw their way up from the back of the field after a restart. It was really impressive racing from those two as Herta made 20 total overtakes in the race and Rosenqvist made 25 overtakes (the most overtakes of anyone in the race).
i always look forward to your videos
thank you man!!
Indycars destruction derby sturck again. Looks like a great city but a msaaiv amount of repair bills
Haha great video man! I so love the annually nashville video. Can't wait for next year's rampage.
Keep up the good work man really like your video's 👍
Thank you mate!
These are great dude. Keep on.
Thanks my man!!
“The Nashville GP was a mess again.”
It’s the Nashville GP, what else did you expect?
true...
Awesome to see some IndyCar content! Keep up the great work.
Thank you man!
Hoped this video would Come out after i saw the race. Good content mate
thanks my man!
I love the chaos this track creates, but just gotta fix the blind corners. Also the truck racing after with freaking ramps was bad ass
And you actually watched that cluster fuck of a race.
I salute you Sir 🫡
Glad to see some Indycar content. Normally I would probably find such a crash fest annoying but the two years at Nashville have been entertaining as hell. It's interesting to see motorsport teams who collect so much data to work out their strategies being forced to wing it because of all the chaos the track brings. I wouldn't want it every week, but one race a year I can deal with.
honestly, the chaos is why i was so excited to watch it.
Ngl me too…
@@FP1Will It doesn't produce great wheel-to-wheel racing but it's still entertaining because of all the cautions. I'll take a lack of actual racing if we can get crazy caution strategies (like Nashville) over nothing but a lack of racing (Monaco). Hell, it Monaco could throw up races likes the last two Nashville Grand Prixs it would be one of my most anticipated events on the F1 calendar. I love Formula One but it's almost too controlled. I want the see how the teams handle non-stop chaos.
After seeing Grojean up the order, all I wanted was for someone not to slam him into the wall.
Of course that wish wasn't grante.d
People are actually planning to build a “football” stadium where the paddock is, which means they will have to change the layout again
It's just a football stadium. There's no need for the scare quotes.
@@BiggieTrismegistus he's being an euroboo
that's weird, the paddock is in the parking lot of Nissan stadium, a huge football stadium for the titans. why would they build another stadium in the parking lot of a huge stadium?
@@KumoGoesFast Just so they can call it a "football stadium" and play American football in it, giving the Brits something else to complain about.
@@BiggieTrismegistus i looked it up, they want to build an entirely new stadium in the parking lot so it can host events like the world cup or superbowl. the current Nissan Stadium does not have the security or infastructure or something. idk. it could cost taxpayers $1.8b
This will be a yearly report every year about how there is a street track that has 13 cars crashing
My feelings about Indy car and F! are the same. Narrow tracks with basically nowhere to pass suck.
There were plenty of passes in nashville. Some of them went smoothly. Some didn't 😉
So excited you are bringing the fun hammer to Indy. It’s such joyful mayhem
Great preview of next year's Nascar Chicago Street race
Great video, got a sub. I don't watch Indy, but a lot of F1 (since 1993-4), but this was very entertaining in its dry almost British sense of humor delivery.
Thanks man!! Welcome aboard!
Hey what could go wrong next year, 3rd time seems to work at a race track if not well, well, they might learn for next year is all you can hope for at this point. Anyway another great video Will
I can see that sub count rising! Well deserved, it’s awesome to see more Indycar content!
Thank you man!
Me, watching IndyCar Nashville highlights: Surely, this will be a sightful race with a bridge in the track!
Minutes later: ... what happened to the half of the grid?
« Grosjean who was on fire for the first time since… »
Hahaha savage.
This would be a great addition to the calender well I think
When I read what had happened this year in Nashville, I knew 100% Will would be back again with yet another spicy review of this hotmess.
Hahaha you weren’t wrong
This weekend is the Nashville GP. I am hype for a mess of a race
Street circuits need to be much wider in modern motorsports imo.
The bridge is a spectacle but the street course barriers just too unforgiving for the indycar drivers
I'm just getting into Indy Car, and I absolutely wanna go to this race! I've only been to Nashville twice, but I love the town!
Takes some rest mate, Indycar content was fire as usual but we hate seeing you this tired 👊
I watched the race live and thought it carnage out there.
thank-you for making me laugh, cheers.
Indycar Nashville Race 2023 = Aug 6, 12 Noon EST
I see on Indycar app will race at 6 PM CEST, and i think, man, that's way early, than previous 2 years which race started too soon
I was watching this and the nascar race. I stayed watching Indycar even when the nascar race was better. Indycar at Nashville is a beautiful mess that it's a experience
Nicely done.
good to see our Supercars boi doing well in Indy Car
As an actual track official myself (not for Indy of course), I can promise you every official at that race just wanted to go home after the 3rd or 4th caution. It gets monotonous honestly. Everyone shows up to have fun and enjoy themselves, but it gets old after awhile
I was just super stoked to see a kiwi 1-2 again, makes me so proud
It's looking like next year might be the last Music City Grand Prix in front of Nissan Stadium and across the Cumberland River, as the contract with the City of Nashville allows it to be moved after next year (not to mention that it looks like Nissan Stadium may be replaced by a stadium where the current pit complex is, as per Nashville resident DannyBTalks). Who knows, it could be held at Nashville Superspeedway, as kind of a throwback to the era when ovals ruled IndyCar.
When I saw the race, I knew you were gonna make a video on it.
Hahahahaha
Enjoyed the event overall. 7 total races and if you’ve buy the right seats, you’ll have a great view of most of the passing and crashes. Track can and should be improved but that requires a lot of entities to come together.
Fortunately, the race promoter is one of the biggest names/money men in Nashville and is also a Trans Am drive who came in 3rd out of 38 in that race so you could say he understands the issues with the track.
its good to know that the person pushing the event also understands what pushing metal around a track really takes, and how small things can end up ruining the entire show.
I loved the race this year, Especially since it didn't end under yellow the end was very entertaining. apart from that, the track was still a challenge and it really shook up the field. It was the perfect balance of entertainment and organization Not too boring and not a massive clusterfuck
It was a fun race like the turkish gp in 2020 with the craziness and unpredictablility
Those are probably the most well maintained roads in town, too.
Excellent! Really glad you created this, more like it please if you can :)
On it!!
@@FP1Will Awesome :)
10PM starts for races. I’d say you’re lucky to only have one or two of them. Down here in Australia for F1 European races are 11PM. And Middle East are in the middle of the morning between 12-3AM
I was working the light panel at Turn 8 for this race and can confirm it was in fact a textbook shitshow. That rain not only put us over 2 hours behind schedule, it also soaked our communications system which meant most of the flag marshalls had little to no comms for most of the race. They also didn't change the rest of the schedule, meaning there was a Jumpy Truck race AFTER the IndyCar race, which got delayed further due to the cleanup of said shitshow. Still fun though.
They have to sort out some corners and fix the bumps (which are actually life threatening).
It was one to watch in the extended highlights.
Will beware of what u r doing. ur spoiling us with some great content. we wont let u rest anymore
Haha cheers mate! Gonna keep on the grind don’t worry!
“I can’t even…” at this race.
I love that you’re doing Indy Car as well. As an American I don’t have a horse in the race with F1 but with Indy car it’s at lest American run.
As a native Nashvillian, 60 years road racing fan, this is an abomination. From the idiot saying Start Yer Injuns, to 36 laps of an 80 lap race being run under caution. And believe me, there's so much more around downtown that they could use besides alleyways around beer joints.
I only decided to watch this race because of last year
I was kind of thinking “hm maybe this will be a normal race because of the cha- nope
at the end I just knew this video was coming
Herta supposedly signing for Alpha Tauri next year, that should give Dr.Marko plenty to rage about.
I literally said a lap before jimmy crashed "it isn't an IndyCar race if jimmy doesn't crash" and well I guess at this point I can predict the future.
In the states ... the time slots jump channels and I didnt get it successfully DVR so ... I missed it. :(
Brilliant video
Thank you!!
😅😆 Near the end, 9:32 or so, I thought you said "so if dry heaving is your thing why not click the red button below" and not dry humour 🤣🤣.
And yes I'm fine going through life being stupid, you get used to it (sometimes people will feel bad for me and give me a cookie, so it's not all bad 😉).
I was born and raised here in Nashville. Our roads are horrible, man. Hell, even if they just repaved the roads that make up the circuit, it would help a lot. Still super cool to see F1 in my hometown. Hopefully they can fix the course before they decide to no longer hold the race here.
I wish Formula E should try the Nashville ePrix because of the IndyCar track designs that look like Circuit de Monaco
like New York ePrix and Miami ePrix
@@andreasgrothe9940 or Long Beach ePrix
Three at once
A 10pm race start? Oh my fat summer child. Here in NZ most F1 races don't start until 1am.
As someone who lives 20 minutes from Nashville, I’ve drove those streets that the track is on plenty of times. They are awful, bumps everywhere, cheap asphalt is always used here. If it sucks for a street vehicle I can only imagine the Indycar series
Funniest part was when Newgarden was given a bath by a spectator bridge under caution
I enjoyed it as a oneoff the chaos the contenders for the Win constantly changing was enjoyable
Didn't even know indy was racing at this track until I saw cleetus video 😅
i reeealy hope this race never happens ever again it's just a wreck fest and complete roulette
This was a demolition derby disguised as an open wheel street course race.
When u said 9 safety car periods I thought I was watching Arrava's my team career mode for a sec
😂😂😂
We just need to redo Nashville and bring back São Paulo
As someone who grew up watching Indycar races on street courses and knows that they're just a general shitshow every single time, I really enjoy seeing the rest of the world take interest in these races. I honestly thought the race was really fun and entertaining, plus despite the constant crashes, there weren't any major delays in getting the race restarted again, I thought the track crew kept it a really smooth show. The turn-around after the bridge is probably way too tight but who knows if there's actually a better option for that.
I don’t get it, either fix the problems which seem very fixable or just take Nashville outa the schedule, it’s that simple. More Indy content would be nice, love how you cover it.
I love Nashville as a race city and the bridge is definitely a very cool aspect. I think the circuit has to be tweaked. Some of these corners are incredibly tight and it looks very bumpy. I think IndyCar should keep Nashville on the calendar but talk to drivers about how it can be made into a more driver friendly race and less of a crash fest.
0:26 - oh no why did I notice that 😫
Notice what?
Thanks for a great report, and staying up so late to do it.
I'm glad that I didn't watch it, personally I really don't get street circuits, full stop.
However, the Americans seem to like racing between walls. At least at the speedway, you get a better view.
I am suspecting that crashes are what the promoters want, as per CRASHCAR, sorry NASCAR.
Nice looking cars, leave them on proper race tracks, and race bangers around the streets.
It's more a matter of tradition than actual preference when it comes to street courses. Also, we don't have as many viable permanent road courses as Europe. Yes, the FIA actually evaluates courses for IndyCar.
honestly it was terrible again but this is clearly an indycar problem. indy lights and gt america were fine. edit: kyle kirkwood made a rookie error with that move and for me, newgarden should know better. also ur comedy lines are pure gold.
I hope Jimmie Johnson’s reputation isn’t affected too badly by his Indycar career. He would be like if Lewis Hamilton went to Formula E and ran in the back for fun
imagine if f1 raced here
Gosh 10 million red flags would occur
DRS zones on the bridge 😬
An entire budget cap would be used on one race
Amazing
All Nashville needs is to run the track across railroad tracks like they did in Baltimore. They really need to clean this up or just say goodbye to Nashville.
dry humour is my thing. so i subscribed
Welcome aboard!
Quick question, what was your masters degree in? Ik it was engineering but what specifically, I want to go do my masters degree in aerodynamics/aeronautical engineering so just want to get an understanding of roughly what to expect
Hey! So my courses full title was aeronautical and astronautical engineering with a focus on aerodynamics. If you here aerospace engineering that’s exactly the same thing. It covers mainly aircraft and spacecraft however the science behind wings and aerodynamics can very easily be used in formula 1 and car design. Basically take the science behind a plane and flip it upside down. Though I’m not going much further down the engineering route I had a lot of fun with it and if you’re willing to put the work in you’ll love it. Hope that helps, any further questions drop me a DM on instagram or twitter 👍
