Totally unprepared.
Not ready but your tip to at least meet the word count every day with scenes that I do know I need to write is so helpful! I’m going to start there while I finish up the rest of my prep.
Not as ready as I want to be but I am going for it and determined to win Nano this year
I'm giving my family rewards when I reach my daily word count (to encourage them to encourage me) they get a piece of chocolate (we might add something else to this for bigger goals ) for every time I reach my daily word count. I get the feeling my teenage son will be the one who gets behind this the most. I'm stoked, I'm working on book three in my dark fantasy series, and the whole thing is completely plotted and scheduled, so unless my characters take me wildly off course, I'm set! I've taken the last few days off and have allowed myself to read and just breathe before taking the big plunge. ❤

I failed at Nano for many a year, honestly just being consistent in writing is amazing. If I feel bad I remember I work full time, and that I do this for fun. And that it’s wild I for a fun hobby go on a writing binge. Any goal even if it’s tiny is worth celebrating!
I'm a proud NaNo REBEL! I have SO many stories written because of NaNo over the years, but now I need to EDIT and feel more productive. I have ( 3 Projects: One to edit, one to Write (a personal love story that's not a novel) and one I'm outlining that could be a Novel after I use your Planner to help me. Thank you SO much for ALL you do. You really motivate me and I just wanna tell you that you DO NOT NEED to apologize to ANYONE for what you do or DON"T do; Do you, Boo!!!! We love ya!!!

I have that same keyboard! It’s made a huge difference in makings me want to sit down and write. Something about the clicking sound makes my brain happy.
Very proud of you Sarra and thankful for everything that you do to help others on the writing journey (us). All of our steps/planning is different. When you compile everything you are doing (Writing, Heart Breathings, HB90, Spooktacular, holidays, Mom, Wife)…. You have to give yourself grace! That’s a whole lot of stuff! And that’s just what we know…. Personal battles/friendships…. Etc…. You’re doing a fine job.
It’s my first NaNo. My first fiction novel. My first novel. I’m nervous… yet excited… and hoping self doubt doesn’t creep in and paralyze me as usual! 😮😅

Sarra, you know life happens every single day. And I, for one, am grateful for that. No regrets for things happening. Because you know, the things we need to experience are why we grow every day. So, focus on you, and not what others think you should be. They too aren't perfect, as no one is. Happy Nano! I'm excited. Not ready. But that's okay. It still feels amazing to start yet another Nano journey. You do it for you!
This video was really therapeutic. I'm also everything else than ready to go. Heck, I don't even have an outline ready or all the name for my main characters. And I know that november will be a stressful month (my birthday is coming up, there's a paper due, university, etc.) but your video reminded me, that I do not have to aim for the 50.000 Words. I think I will shift my goal to writing every day and keep going on building a habit. Thank you so much.
I remember when TokiDoki was first showing up in Shonen Jump magazines and need more in my life. I too want to get the walls clean so they don't stress me out everytime I look at them
Thanks so much for all the work you do for others. Your planner, your videos, all have been incredibly helpful and inspiring. I had a book launch yesterday and so I was juggling doing final edits and proofreading on that MS while trying to also do preptober stuff. I wouldn't have been as successful in juggling that and having a successful launch while also going into NaNo as confident as I am without your videos and planner. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
ETA: BTW. I have the same keycaps on my clicky keyboard! My favorite part of the set is the definitely the zodiac symbols for the function keys.
Thank you for this! I was on the fence about whether or not to sign up this year, but I didn't really want to work on a new story idea. I've decided to 'participate in spirit' by just spending the month of November working on a story that I've already started and just focus on world building and character development. Happy Writing month everyone!
Yes, I have had to shift. It meant resetting my goals to something reasonable for me. My new NaNo is 25,000 where I will reread and check my path every other day so my story stays on track. I need to make my words count this time. Thank you for the encouragement to move forward despite our circumstances, Sarra.
Thanks for the tips! I didn't think about planning out my meals, clothes, and cleaning. Such a good idea. My brain works so much better when I have order in every area of my life.
I had an "ah ha!" moment with my novel. It took me two years to get back into my headspace after deleting nearly 30k words. I'm happy with what I've written and it is now with my editor.
I love the idea of going to an Air B&B or a hotel for focus. I live in a resort town and the hotels have massive discounts in the winter for rooms during the week.
Again, Sarra, thanks for all the tips. Now, I'm off to plan my new novel. :)
I'm going through this same process of shifting my expectations of what I intended to do this month. I'm reframing November as time for me and my craft, no matter what I'm working on, after a busy October that is all about my family and doing things for others. While I still have that mild disappointment, I know giving myself some freedom to let NaNo be whatever it will be will get me much farther in the end. And who knows, maybe after I've regrouped and rested a bit, I'll have the motivation to do more than I expected, but if I don't, that's okay too.
Love your work as always! When you shared you were worried about not following through, all I could think was you faced a trade-off of your writing time to show up for your fans & community - a temporary season that simply is, & absolutely not something you should feel bad/uncomfortable about. All the absolute best for Nano & thank you for showing up ❤
When I got the alert that this video dropped, I saw the "I'm not ready!" graphic and literally shook my head and said out loud "girl, same."😂 I got a late start to prep-tober, so I feel like I'm flying into this year a little less prepared than I'd wanted to be. But, nevertheless, it is Day 1 of NaNo and I'm determined to dive in.

I am always behind! So there will never be any judgement from me. lol And no, I have not started writing yet. It is what it is. Still working on plotting (at the most minimum I think I can handle). My plan is to start writing tonight or tomorrow at the latest. I know I'll have a lot of catch up, but I'm not giving up. Congrats on the Rangers winning! My sons were rooting for them too. And speaking of weather, I live in Michigan and snow is common here, but not usually around Halloween. It really snowed on Halloween this year. I was shocked. But I do love winter. My sister was mad at me. 😁
i didnt get around to doing my outline before November so today, day 1, I'm counting the words from it towards nano - its words for my story, its words written in November, and its honestly more mental energy than just writing

I went on a cruise a little over a week ago and I had no internet access at all. I was freaking out a bit because I couldn't get my outline finished before I left. (I'm very much a plotter) So I grabbed your Nano planner, printed out the parts of my outline that were done and and bought a pack of small sticky notes. I managed to get the outline finished while I was on the ship. I got several curious looks as I feverishly scribbled on sticky notes and had them in rows over the paper. (I almost used the whole 4 pack)😆I guess I'm as ready as I can be. Best wishes to us all!!

Wow, I really love your level of preparation, Sarra! NaNoWriMo is the Super Bowl of the writing community so getting those micro decisions out of the way to hyperfocus on story and craft, genius!
Just need to finalise episode one outline of my fantasy serial. I'd hoped to finish all the episodes before Nov 1st. But that didn't happen. Episode one 1st draft will have to suffice. I'm so excited!

It's nice to hear others have that "shift and needing to rewrite some chapters.... that I'm not the only one this happens to! something happened and fell into place and I had a character write "themselves" into my story and it was exactly what my story needed but... I had to go back and rewrite a bunch and add a bunch to this story... and I got pushed back a little hahaha but I'd rather this happen and write the perfect for me story and what feels write than not go with my gut and be super proud of my final outcome :)
I am so excited I cannot wait. I am going to do the best I can and not put too much stress on myself. I am going to try to enjoy the process. Thank you for the video!
I have a nano uniform too! I always wear the same sweatshirt and comfy socks when sitting down to write
When you plan to finish a project before Nov 1st and it doesn’t happen… that’s exactly where I’m at this Nanowrimo! I got sick in October with a horrible cold that wiped me out for almost two weeks and then I was away a few days as well, so here we are and I’m going into Nano with two projects to manage. Ah well! At least I have plenty to work on, right? 🤷♀️
I wrote "Positive Momentum" on a Post-it and put it on my computer. Thanks for the new mantra!
I'm not still prepping, mostly because I gave up on prepping, but part of that is because the more precisely I tried to plan the story, the worse I felt about writing it. In other words, my idea of 'hm, maybe I'll try to become a planner this year' flopped abysmally. :) That being said, I'm excited for NaNoWriMo!

I’m doing nanowrimo this year. I’ll be bringing my story with me on the way to work tomorrow and work on it. I get up at 5 am in the morning to get ready for work and then I have to catch my first bus to Downtown Spokane and then catch my second bus to go out to the Air Force Base to work and then I don’t get home till 5pm
That's a long day! Good for you prepping everything to take with you on the trip!

I'm not participating in the normal drafting way this year due to a week long trip that would make it just impossible. But, I'm hoping to finish line editing my previous manuscript.
I get your pain from Texas. I live in Kansas it is 39 currently then it will be 70 by the weekend at least that is what the weather says today. 😂Welcome to fall either cold or nice temp or in your case possibly hot. Our temps can be sporadic at times. 😅
Dear gods did I need to hear this today. I had several health issues and doctor appointments in October that threw me off, and finishing up a piece of commission art before the 1st. Time just got away from me and I am nowhere near as prepped as I wanted to be for Nov. 1st. I was feeling pretty hateful to myself about it until I watched this, and it is SO empowering to know I'm not alone. Thank you so much.

I don’t think I’ll ever be as ready as I think I should be. But I’ve got a pretty decent outline and a pretty good idea what I’m writing.
I did change my mind. Originally was going to work on my cozy mystery. But shifted to a speculative idea that I’m excited about.
I won’t be able to start writing until later tomorrow, but I’ll get it done. ❤
I completely understand where you are in regards to finishing the current project that you have during nano. I unexpectedly got laid off, so it's been an emotional roller coaster, and I'm still preparing for my last day so starting a new project definitely was not in the cards for me, but I will be finishing the last two or three chapters left of my current draft And I hope that by the end of the year I'll be able to finish that so my plans go beyond nano and of course I hope and pray that I find a new job so I have less stress in my life right now. I didn't finish my novella that I was supposed to finish last week. So I'll finish that in November and start my next book. I still hope to get my 50K words.
The thing I didn’t get done beforehand that I really wish I had is cleaning my kitchen and getting a meal plan together. I would feel much more at ease with my writing time if I didn’t have to worry about thise things. 😂

I just want to say how thankful I am for your honesty. I am sorry that you are having to rewrite 30k at this stage, but I’m relieved it happens even to amazing and established writers. I hope that’s ok to say. I have been looking at some first drafts and feeling like I must be the worst writer in the world the amount I need to throw out and write again. So hearing it happens. I needed to hear that. So seriously thank you.
I am not as prepped as I would like. I prefer a full outline but I found what I was trying to make work, just had too many logic holes, so I had to throw a lot out and now I am basically doing your “just trying to keep ahead” approach. Not my preferred but if it’s another zero draft then it’s all practice I guess. I can’t fix what doesn’t exist and all that jazz.

I'm soooo excited it's going to be my very 1st NaNoWriMo!!! And, thanks to you're "Outlining a Novel" video, I feel ready to take on November! Though, I am going to be a bit of a NaNo-Rebel as my project technically is already started. But, I'm just at the start of my first draft so in my book I'm just prepared - LOL🤣

This is so validating. I am stressed and exhausted when I should be excited and ready to go.
I think the change I'm going to make is that I'll give myself credit for working in either drafting the second book (including long rambly "what could happen next" digressions) or working on revisions of the first book.
It's funny, as a pantser I envy plotters for their ability to know what they're doing before they start out. Grass is always greener, I guess.

I have been trying to balance running a retail business during the holidays and attempting NaNo for the last two years. I have had to give myself the grace I would show others encouraging them that any words they wrote are words they did not have before. If you don’t take care of yourself, you cannot carry forward with your creative endeavors. You are awesome! Goals are great, but they are all just goals. Do your best and celebrate what you get done!

I've been working on my Nanowrimo novel from last year for the past year and have only just realized I need to go back to the beginning to plot again because it's not working 😭

I know it's discouraging, but honestly, you've made so much progress by realizing it's not working! Better than getting halfway through NaNo and having to turn around!

Thank you for this video, it was very encouraging. I was also trying to finish a project before November, but I’ll have to work on it for at least part of NaNo. I was disappointed at first, but now I’m happy to work on this project a little longer. I’m also glad I didn’t rush through the writing.
Oh my goodness. I’ve had to rewrite POV. Realized I had wrong character as main…but it’s so much better now
🙋♀I Definitely had to shift plans. Wanted to finish up book two in my ten book series and start book 3 for Nano, but in the middle of September my dad had back surgery and now two additional hospitalizations and I've been doing the majority of the day time care taking. Then at the end of September my father-in-law passed. Both of which have really set my plan back, but that is life and I took the time I needed. Last night I was pretty set on not even doing it this year. This morning now, I'm not sure. 😂
I didn't decide to actually do NaNo until the 26th. My son started sleeping through the night and I don't know if he didn't if I would have.
If course, I'm looking at this NaNo as that team that goes out plays hard, but they know it's not going to be a win. If my brain says no writing, that's okay. If I want to crochet instead that's fine. It'll be great.

This is great! I am definitely behind....a cold threw me for a loop, and I am still recovering. I am going to do what you suggested and just figure out what I am writing tomorrow. If I can come up with more of an outline, great, but I won't push it.
Hi Sarra! This video was so reassuring. This is my first NaNo and first time really committing to writing a novel. I switched my idea last minute because the novel I’d been developing for months just wasn’t inspiring me to move forward. I’m a plotter in all areas of life, but am trying to embrace discovery writing and taking pressure off of the craft. I really appreciate that you shared some of your own challenges and that you reevaluated your goals.

I’m kind of in a similar place. I’ve been working on the rough draft of another novel for several months and was hoping to finish it up by November so I could write something new for NaNo. Haha, so that definitely didn’t happen. And extensively plotting the NaNo project didn’t really happen either, so… I didn’t really want to work on the first project for NaNo because it’s already pretty long and I don’t think I still have quite 50k words left to write, but I’d like to get it to a better stopping point before setting it aside. So far I’ve been working on the new story for NaNo, but it’s been a struggle so far and I think I’m going to end up working on multiple projects for NaNo.

I wasn’t planning to do Nano this year as I’m still editing/rewriting my novel that I worked on during November last year (it’s been a slow writing year 😅), and I didn’t want to start a whole new project. But at the last minute I decided to participate with the knowledge that I won’t be hitting that 50k goal, but hoping to make some decent headway on my current project. I was having deep feelings of regret and disappointment in myself, but I feel soo much better knowing there’s a few of us in the same unprepared boat. 😂
I measure editing with time spent on it. I calculate average number of words per minute for me and multiple it with time I spent editing.

I decided which project to write 5 minutes before starting to write it today ... Then i went to start sprints and realized i didnt know anything about my character, even his name. I also didn't even have a document set up for this story. So i spent the first five minutes of the sprint creating a document and naming my MC... 😅

I'm redoing a 2015 Nano project because after going back through it, I was disappointed by the romance of the character couple, so I'm going back to change it and make it more of a professional relationship and less of a love at first sight type of love.
I'm stuck working out what I'm going to work on.
I don’t advertise my goals anymore just my intentions like “I want to accomplish this”. And not my “SMART goals”.
But then again, I’m a questioner and hate external expectations. If I know people are expecting something from me, I instantly don’t want to do it.
I can't plan a story. My brain doesn't work that way. An idea will come to me then the characters will introduce themselves and the setting will shimmer into view. I just write what I see and what the characters do & say & experience. My problem is motivation for the rewrite. 🙈
I cannot plan that detailed either. I have to be that organised for my job, so I do not want to have to do the same with my writing.
Totally understand this, and I'm a bit jealous of it honestly! But I do love the rewrites, haha. So we're opposites!

Hey there, with the Kindle scribe, can you import google docs documents or vice versa. I don't have or use Microsoft Word anymore with it being so expensive.
You can export your google doc as a PDF or word doc and it will upload to the scribe, I believe!
