It’s quite possibly my favorite Olivia bridge (aside from drivers license obvi lol) because the way the whole thing flows and the way she delivers each lyric and that piano, that piano is INSANEEEEE
Olivia has said that "hope ur ok" is the closer because she wanted to acknowledge that despite the heartbreak shes experienced, many lgbtq+ people she grew up with never got to experience any of the good parts of young love and she wanted to reach out to them. It's really sweet. Especially bookended by brutal, since she addresses the hardships of gen-z's youth in both songs.

Her whole album is practically just a therapy session, starting off with a breakdown, moving on to her explaining her relationship, then ending with the realization that she’s not ok and she hopes that her past relationships even though they where friends might not be ok too.

i don’t know if anyone in the comments has mentioned this or if you find it out later in the video but new year’s day isn’t actually sampled in 1 step forwards 3 steps back. she asked permission from jack and taylor to play it on the piano so scooter wouldn’t get any money from it.

scooter sold taylor's masters to another company, he wouldn't make money anyway
@@aydenlucas8904 he sold it, but he still gets copyright money from it, it was one of the details in the contract and the reason why Taylor decided to definitely part with her masters, cause now he would always make money off of her even if the people who own it at the moment re sell them.

I was a camp counselor this summer and the amount of middle schoolers and elementary schoolers who were screaming these songs with so much passion had me thinking "who hurt yall" especially Good 4 You.

almost 2 years late, but i think "hope ur ok" was the closer for the album because she's essentially trying to say that even though she's going through emotional heartbreak, there are people with other situations that are way worse than hers. the scale of emotional endurance that they had to go through would be 10x harder to do than Olivia's situation. it really humanises her and adds relatability to her experience too. she's saying that she will be ok herself, but she hopes for the same to those around her.

someone from tiktok had a theory why this album called Sour is because not a single song from this album is love or happy song. the theory is she will release a sister album and she will call it "Sweet" that only contains love and happy songs. The easter egg was from the pr package she sent out that has Sweet and Sour patches on it.

I feel like Olivia has very unique lyrics. Like she pulls inspiration from other artists and that’s just a fact. But the way the she mixes those themes and ways of singing makes her as an individual singer/songwriter very good.

Yeah I’m also a queer American and I picked up on it too. One of my good friends is Australian and we actually talked about this. She said how it’s not that being queer isn’t accepted, it just that it’s not as talked about there. The conversation about being queer is growing to become more prominent in America and the topic isn’t as widely talked about there

“Enough For You” is the only song on the album she wrote completely on her own which just makes it so much more vulnerable. And her producer was hesitant to put “Brutal” on the album so it was a last minute addition but pretty much everyone loves it!

Olivia Rodrigo is the artist I wish I had at that age 20+ years ago. Grateful that teens nowadays have an artist like her. Just gonna go sit in my little corner and listen to Sour on repeat so I can try and process all that angst again.
I’m glad I have Sour at 40 as it is wonderful music for these times. It is timeless music, but it is nice to hear with all these years of experiences as an adult just as many teens are hearing Sour now.

I don't feel like we took away any credit from Olivia when talking or comparing her to Taylor. She has sought inspiration from Taylor and many other artist and we just discussed that, I think its cool to see that!

fun fact: driver’s license was her first song which started with a sound of a car being started & her last song in the album- hope ur ok ended with the sound of a car being stopped (you can listen it if you hear carefully)
i love "hope ur ok" because not only does it discuss homophobia/queer youth (which i always appreciate in a song being as i have been out since i was 11) but when she says "i hope you know how proud i am you were created with the courage to unlearn all of their hatred" shes saying "you're not your parents, just because they believe something doesn't make YOU a bad person" and that is a message i, as well as many other people I'm sure, definitely need from time to time. When i hear the second verse talking about olivia's middle school friend and how her parents "hated who she loved" I absolutely lose it cause even tho I wasn't alone, my parents were home a lot, their gay jokes/bigotry made me feel so freaking isolated, to the point where i didn't come out till i was 18 (and that was on accident lmao) that song really speaks to me on multiple levels.
as somebody who's also out (not to parents LMAOO but to my friends), this is my fave song from sour bc of that reason. also bc it's j genuinely a great song, but its just so important. the message is so important. im sure there's some closeted kid out there who feels far less alone bc of this song which is epic bc nobody deserves to feel alone esp in their sexuality.

She said it’s called sour because it’s about the souring of a romantic relationship and also your relationship with yourself. She said growing up she was so confident in herself and then after that first heartbreak, she suddenly had all these doubts and questioned her self-worth. That first kind of rejection is one of the most unpleasant shocks of adulthood - that someone who knew you so intimately could revert back to being a complete stranger. And so she said a lot of self-doubt crept in and she felt her relationship with herself souring.
She also said she wanted to play on the idea that she’s dealing with emotions that girls are usually kinda looked down upon for feeling. Like jealousy, spite, rage. We are made to feel like it’s childish and cringey to feel as intensely as we do if a guy has cheated or something, and are made fun of for it. She’s embracing those emotions and the fact that she’s sour unapologetically💞💞

I love that they recorded this reaction like this. It’s so cool to watch people hear songs for the first time. Also, knowing what’s coming and just waiting like, “Oh if you like that just wait like twenty seconds, it gets even better.”
The part where you guys pointed out her ending brutal with “Don’t know where to start” while it’s the first track on the album was the same reaction I got when I first heard the song because I’ve adapted the way you two analyze songs😅 I watched tons of reactions where I waited for them to point it out, but non of them did until you two. I admit that before, I didn't care much about the sequence until you two (as well as your friends in the background) came into my life! I'm grateful for that because it really gives a new perspective to an album which makes us love them more.

FUN FACT olivia actually didn't technically sample new year's day, it was interpolated in 1step forward 3 steps back which means that's it's olivia playing the piano on the track to the same melody of new year's day but it's tweaked a bit THIS MEANS that she's not using the sample directly from the rep album (which would give money and credits to taylor's old label) but instead it gives credit directly to taylor since she hasn't re-recorded rep yet! what a fucking power move by olivia
Olivia made me appreciate music and the reason why I listen to Taylor swift is because of her! she made me look at music with a new perspective and now I do listen to lyrics carefully and interpret my thoughts and try to find what it means. I love her.

Wonderful lyrics, some songs slow and easy going while others are dancey and upbeat, the bass guitar playing, Olivia’s wonderful voice and power.
I absolutely loved the you you analyzed the entire album: lyrics’ meaning, similarities between her music and others, the various emotions she expresses and most - SUPPORT AND APPRECIATION!! What I love about this is the fact that her songs kind of open you up and lower your guard then invade with the truth, although it seems, pun intended, brutal, I think it works pretty well, and people love it because it's so relatable

I see "favorite crime" as the closing chapter of the relationship and the heartbreak that came with it and then "hope ur ok" as her showcasing a different side of her songwriting abilities. It reminds me of what Taylor did with folklore and evermore in a way because those albums were more storytelling based with Taylor using her own experiences as an influence for writing about situations separate from her own. I feel like "hope ur ok" is the perfect album closer because it shows her depth as a songwriter and is kind of an indicator of what she's capable of. Her talent goes beyond writing songs about only heartbreak and I feel like this was the perfect way to give people a taste of that.

I loved "hope ur okay" its my favorite song on the album because I was in similar situations to the song, and when i first heard it i was in a lot of stuff with family and now i'm okay but when i first heard it i wasnt and i cried and it made me so happy at that moment to know that someone actually caried, and the person i was living with was abuseive and it was hard to deal with.. and this song helped me so much. little fun fact, in music theory what olivia does on deja vu with the harmonies is called ‘text painting’/word painting’. it means that the lyrics reflect the music. like when a melody goes lower when the lyrics mention the word down and vice versa. there’s tons of cool examples and it’s always a good sign when producers and writers knowingly incorporate that 🥰

The first two are obvious, the laugh “Ha-ha-ha-ha…”, and singing in “harmony.” The third one is commonly missed: “She probably tells you she loves you between the chorus and the verse.” It’s a bit masked by the music but Olivia then whispers “I love you” right between the verse and chorus.
Hope ur ok makes me cry every time from that one line “who wore long sleeves because of his dad” and I am very thankful that I had a good up bringing(not trying to brag) but hearing that line makes me feel guilty because I had such a good up bringing and it just amazes me that that song even hits hard for me.
