- In this video you will see the restoration of an old blacksmith anvil quite damaged. I ran into some complications especially the tempering one , I hope you enjoy this video or at least it entertains you !
HISTORY :
The anvil traces its origins to the fifth millennium BC. of C. It is known that in 4200 a. from C. Flat stone blocks were used as an anvil on which soft metals such as copper were forged. Iron was later used to work harder metals.
This anvil had no brand or anything written if you know what brand or what year it could be, leave it to me in the comments!

Im always screaming and raving when i see people take so much of the surface of an anvil when they restore it, and simply replace the face with high carbon steel. Seeing you harden the face brought me joy! Good job! I think that you would have had an even better result if you would have moved it around in the watertank more during cuenching, adding new cold water does a lot, but steam jacket is a real thing! Well done sir! That is a well restored anvil!
Would have loved to see the difference between a steel ball bounce on the old surface compared to the new surface. Great video thumbs up.
Thanks !!!
I really admire the work you put into turning that sow's ear into a silk purse. I don't know that I would have put in that much effort into a anvil that was badly cast with sub grade steel but you did pull it off. Great work!
.
thank you so much !!!
Most MAGNIFICENT restoration I've ever seen!!!! A thing of pure BEAUTY!!
Muchas gracias !! ❤❤❤
I love how you used a lathe like a milling machine. 👍
Muchas gracias !!
Excellent thorough work. No Ts left uncrossed. Makes me wish I was young again. A pleasure to watch.
Muchas gracias !!
Wonderful to see someone take the time to save an old, abused anvil. It will last a lifetime now. Keep the fire burning!

Muchas gracias!!!

Excellent job bro, I thought you were making a mistake by grinding that bevel on the top until I saw what you did it for.👍👍
Thank you so much !!!
Excellent work!
Thanks !!
Muchas gracias Salvador !!
@@myrelics1 a ti por subir estos vídeos.
Excellent job!
Nice work 👏
The plate is not forge welded to the top like it was traditionally done. Only the edges are welded so there's an air gap along the entire center. It looks good and will be a good working anvil, it isn't done properly and the face is prone to cracking in half now.
sorry but strongmaster is correct - if your content with light forging it’ll be fine but if you start to put some force into your forging there’s a good chance that top will part ways with the body of the anvil
Love that you made it into a working anvil, not a lawn ornament
Thank you so much !!!
That anvil was an extremely poorly cast one from the factory. Nice restoration job. I was quite worried it might crack where the lead was poured in when you re-tempered it.
All of the re-facing jobs I have seen were where the anvil was put into a large forge and the new face forge welded on.
I treated my wooden base block bottom and sides with a copper base paint to kill any bugs trying to get into the wood.
My friend and I both painted the sides and bottoms of our anvils with Atco Carbon Elastic paint. Horrible smell and takes a couple of weeks to dry, but in the last 50+ years since we treated them, no rust through the paint. I did like the routing of the anvil block for a good fit. Kudos on that idea.
All in all, a very nice restoration job.
Muchas gracias !!
Actually he did not really add any hardness to the anvil. Wrong kind of metal for that.
Muchas gracias Antonio !!!❤❤
Well done that was amazing! I loved watching this 👍
Beautiful job, Sir
Thanks !!
It looks like it got worms. Glad you saved it.
Buen trabajo , saludos desde Valencia
Gracias , saludos !!
Good job. Well done.
Excellent job. Was a little concerned when you plunged it into water that it may crack considering the void in the base of the casting, but it came good. Well done.🙂🇬🇧
Exeptionell well done. 👍
Well it looks like you did a amazing job a lot of hard work I am surprised that the top plate did not crack around the perimeter of the weld at the time of quenching
Very cool, love the lathe faceing the anvil, you should do the ball bearing test to see if the face is hardened evenly.
Nice job my friend……filing that hardy hole square took some time I bet……
Muchas gracias !! Si , tarde mucho tiempo en limarlo
Great job 👏👏
thanks !!❤
Hello from England. Just subbed, i've got a thing for anvils. Lovely restoration. Thank you.
Thanks !!!
Aye dios mio, hamburquesas! That was awesome dude, nice restoration 👍
Muchas gracias !!!
Awesome job.
Now drop a big ball bearing onto the top of it to check rebound. That's the real test.
Gracias !! , tendré que probarlo !!
True heavy metal, nice!
I'm at a loss of words to express how beautiful this anvil is… I've never seen them so clean, neat and fairly built. You're insanely talented. And the sole fact that you went through all this trouble to harden and temper it… simply outstanding
Excelente👏👏👏👏
Gracias !!
When screwing you use your drilling tool into drilling mode instead of screwing (the selector with numbers and drawings). It might be why you break some screws. Very nice work besides that.
The best anvil restoration ever.
thanks !!!❤❤
@@myrelics1 I just watched it the second time. It's still the best anvil restoration ever.
Boa noite!

Great job ^5😊
Very nice l was wondering how you were going to harden the new top well done 👏
Thank you so much !!!❤
Cooking on it 😂 humor always makes me want to comment.

Muy buen vídeo de restauración. 👍
Always scares the heck out of me seeing someone wearing gloves with any rotary tool.
si , es un peligro muy real
I truly enjoyed watching this, Thank you. I've gotten gifted an anvil similar to your there and it's going to require some efforts to make it workable again, if perhaps not as bad as yours was, I look forward to the challenge.
🤣 thank you so much !! ❤
¡Bravo, amigo canario!.
A esperar con ganas el próximo.
Un cordial saludo, maestro
Muchas gracias!! ❤️ Un saludo!!
Excellent 👍
Thanks !!
Very good job
Thanks !!
Great anvil restoration accomplished with fairly basic tools. However, aesthetic speaking, the brightly coated / modern manufactured chain and lag screws are dissonant chords that detract from the rest of the project. JS Some hand crafted chain as well as hand formed square head screws in the stump band, with some flat strap anvil tie downs would push this beauty over the top. 💪
Thanks !! ❤
Very nice!

Best job ever

The hole, was a casting defect. The mold maker did not include a big enough RISER, to feed the cooling molten steel/iron.

You should use some silicone to mount it to the stump it sounds good the way it is not with the silicone nothing can get under it
Good job 👍
