Simply understanding that you're not the right person for him/her and knowing that she/he is not the right person for you neither cause if you'd really love him/her you would let him/her to be happy, even if that happiness doesn't come from you is too mainstream I guess XD

A good point. For all we know some of the castle's inhabitants WERE killed, just off-screen.
Not ONCE do any of these people think “hey, this beast has been in that castle for... how long? And he’s never once bothered us before? Maybe we shouldn’t bother him?”

Whatever is perceived as a threat to the "norm" is considered an enemy to the majority. Except... life is so much complicated than that and nothing can ever be boiled down to concrete absolutes, besides scientific or numerical fact and even then, there will always be people who question that. Go figure.

this song is pretty much to demonstrate the dangers of mob mentalities. Also, if you're charismatic enough, you'll have no problem convincing the divided masses to even do something so unreasonable

Mob mentality in a nutshell. Disney songs are full of little jokes and clever phrases, if you take the time to look.

If you didn't know the whole story, like Gaston doesn't, then the beast could actually be seen as a bad guy. He kidnaps an old man, then imprisons the man's daughter. For all Gaston knows, Belle has stolkholm syndrom. The beast would actually be pretty awful sounding if all you knew was that he imprisioned some girl.
To be fair they were trespassing.
Plus even if Gaston knew the whole story he'd still do this cause he's a bastard who planned to threaten Belle into marrying him, if she refused her father would be taken to a mad house.
That's valid, but knowing the whole of Gaston's story, this was more of a testosterone/rage induced vengeance against the beast. He laughs at Belle and Maurice but the moment he picks up on Belle's true feelings - feelings that she never showed him - he couldn't bear it. He uses the Beast's appearance to his advantage, inciting the townsfolk, but we see it's a personal vendetta - "Take whatever booty you can find, but remember, the Beast is mine!" - he cannot let another man "win" Belle. Just my opinion ;)

Disney's making a point about how some humans are narrow-minded butt faces. Seeing that you disagree with these lyrics proves you're NOT one of said butt faces.
Well, it pretty defines the idea of a mob. Gaston played on the villagers' fears, talking about the Beast eating their children and wives. By the time the fear and increasingly morbid suppositions was through, they were convinced they needed to take quick, preemptive action.
Its a well-known fact that the bigger the crowd, the lower the overall ability to reason.
They think they're right because there's more of theme.
The lesson here is not to blame the victim(the beast) but burn the witch that cursed him.
A lot of people compare Gaston to a bully, but i think Gaston is more like a terrorist.
Only he doesn't use terror to make people fear him, he uses terror to make people fear his enemies, thus rallying them to his cause. This song has some dark social undertones. Shows how easy it can be to manipulate the weak minded public.
all they know is that Gaston is the towns' most respected citizen (probably akin to a local superhero) and that belle was kidnapped and has been driven slightly crazy by her experience. Hell, i'd grab a pitchfork. Gaston isnt a terrorist, he's just taking things on face value

It made me really sad to hear the Beast speak at the end. His voice didn't sound like something evil at all, but rather a sensitive soul. Yet he is a beast, and without seeing him your imagination could run wild about what terrible thing he looks like. It made it clear how cursed he is and how fearful the villagers would be about something they've never seen.
Its amazing how the villagers decided to follow Gaston after he's been proven a liar... Though I suppose the greater fear of the beast is a great motivator.
McCarthy should be proof of this notion.

Here's an oddity I noticed. On the soundtrack album version of this song, when Beast is speaking his lines, it sounds like Benson's natural voice, whereas in the finished film they obviously deepened it electronically. I wonder why there is a difference in the mixing here?

No. Gaston is definately a villain. Nothing anyone else did can justify his character or his actions, since he wasn't a part of that story originally. His stupidity eventually led him there later in the movie. However, I do hate that witch quite a bit.

About the lines of the objects at 2:18, Cogsworth wouldn't have said what he said if this story took place in the time of telephones because the Beast and the objects could always have given Belle a call on the phone (or if it were now, an email or text) and they would know Belle still loved Beast.
