Ductile cast iron, also known as nodular cast iron or spheroidal graphite iron, forms in a nodular or spherical shape due to the presence of nodular graphite in its microstructure. This graphite is formed by adding specific alloying elements, typically magnesium and/or cerium, to molten cast iron before it is cast. These elements encourage the graphite to nucleate and grow in a nodular form rather than the flake-like structure found in traditional gray cast iron.
