Here are some tips: Practice your solo Bach and familiarize yourself with 7th chord voicings on the violin/mandolin, learn melodies in the style of the music you want to play to gain language, and listen and transcribe from recordings.
Also, for soloing try to create melodies in your head first and then transfer that to your fingers, instead of allowing left hand muscle memory to lead entirely (playing only practiced licks, etc). Develop the ability to sing a melodic line and play it at the same time. The more connected you can get that brain straight to finger relationship the better improviser you'll be.
