  • This is the Schindler MT hydraulic elevator in the Duluth Athletic Club building in Duluth, Minnesota. This video is a few years old now and it shows this elevator acting rather weird. I don't know what the issue was, but it kept going into 'nudge mode' and it stalled going down from the second floor temporarily. I haven't been on this elevator in well over a year, so I would imagine that it has been inspected and fixed since this video was taken (hopefully, anyway). I probably should have stopped riding it after I first noticed something wasn't right, but I wanted a full ride and the 'nudge mode' thing didn't seem to happen all the time.

My local Extended Stay America has a Schindler 300A with the same issue (sort of): You press the floor button, the door closes, then it reopens, and then it closes and the elevator starts moving.

Nudge mode is cool but like why does it engage everytime? Schindler MT was my childhood, (Born in 2000)

Jeez wish I was in college and my plan is to become that kind of person who fixes elevators so that is a job I want to do someday

This elevator has been crap since they put it in. The sad thing is this bldg. had an elevator nearly identical to the one you filmed at the old KBJR bldg. but I guess it was destroyed in the Chinese Lantern fire. It was on the north side of the big marble staircase in the middle of the bldg. The only difference was it had gorgeous dark wood paneling.

Dana Danarosana Huh, I always wondered if this building had another elevator somewhere. Maybe it's still there but not easily accessible anymore? Anyway, I know they've done renovations to this building in the past year or so...maybe they noticed the problems with this elevator and got it fixed? Wishful thinking, probably. Haven't been on it in such a long time, but I remember around the time I filmed this, I would visit every so often and it always acted like this. It's as if either nobody rides it or whoever does simply doesn't care.

Sadly, no... Just open space on the bottom floor. I've been in all 5 restaurants that tried to make it on the bottom floor... and just open office space on the upper 2 floors. It was overhead traction and that fire started in Chinese Lantern's kitchen hood and destroyed the roof and attic space. I'd think if it was at all salvageable, it would've been repaired rather than moved and replaced as elevators are so expensive.

Dana Danarosana Oh that's too bad. Would that have been an Otis elevator then? Always wondered about the KDLH building elevator too...Thought it was an Otis, but without a faceplate, it's hard for me to figure it out sometimes.

Yeah... Chinese Lantern elevator was an Otis with the little black bakelite buttons. I kinda think the old KDLH bldg. elevator was a Dover/Johnson... obviously with replacement fixtures when they put the Skywalk through the bldg. It acted, sounded, and kinda even smelled just like the garage elevator at US Bank. Ride that one again and listen to the clicking microswitches and the sound of the actual pump... and try to reflect back to the KDLH elevator.
