This episode is a great example of Cell veering from being incredibly funny to being bone-chilling in the space of a second alone.
The voice work of Takahata101 is what makes this version of Cell (He also voiced Nappa and Super Kami Guru)

The running gag of Vegeta being steadily more disappointed and angry every time a new Android pops up that Trunks didn't know about is hilarious. Poor boy.
Cell just going around and drinking people is horrifying. But the way they manage to balance out the horror aspects with comedy is honestly really impressive

The ending scene gets me to this day. It shows how Cell - even though he sometimes makes really inappropriate jokes and comes off as goofy - is a horrifying movie Monster to the core.

"Imperfect Cell" is hands down one of the best characters, there's a very subtle sense of Self Awareness to him, like he knows he's "The Horror Movie Monster" and he's gonna enjoy that roll while attacking and drinking everyone

curtis is really flexing his voice acting muscles in this episode as cell, my goodness. we already knew he was good at being funny since he played nappa and lord slug, but it’s cool that when we get to see him play a more serious and menacing character he absolutely knocks it out of the park! great episode, can’t wait to see what comes next 💚

The bit about 17&18 being named Lapis and Lazulli, and 16 being based on Gero's son, is never mentioned in DBZ and comes from supplemental material, that's why Krillin asks if he's making it up. Later, Team Four Star /Animated a New Sequence!/ showcasing 16 talking to Gero as Dad back during the events of Dragonball. It's simple and brief, but keep your eyes out for it, because it's pretty cool that TFS added to continuity like that.
Cell killing the radio hosts at the end was complete nightmare fuel and I'll not be sleeping soundly for the next month once again.

The joke about the Androids names and #16 being Gero's son being made up is because none of that was established in 1992 when these episodes aired.
A couple of years ago Toriyama just decided "Oh yeah he's a robot version of Gero's son and #17 and #18 have real names. Also Gero had a hot wife who's also an android."

Akira Toriyama did confirm the whole bit with #17 and #18's real names, and after watching Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the bit with #16 was also confirmed as well as a surprise pic of #21 (whose only canon in the games after Dragon Ball FighterZ) being another of part of Gero's life. I'm not gonna spoil anything else, I'll let y'all discover all the rest yourselves by either watching this episode of seeing that movie for confirmation.

Fun Fact about the android vs cyborg thing: It is a joke as the english dub called them Androids. Japanese and German dubs for example do call them Cyborgs. Their names in german are also C16, C17, C18 etc instead of Nr. 16-18.
Well, in Japanese it's just 'artificial humans', which they also reference in a later episode.

@@wakkaseta8351 Nah you're thinking of the direct meaning of the English translation, but the Japanese words aren't as cleanly defined as the words we have in English and is more of an umbrella term, and cyborgs, androids and bio androids all fit under jinzou ningen. The jinzou part can be even taken as just generally man-made or modified, and the ningen part isn't just humans, it can be read as humanoids, people or mortals too.

@@wakkaseta8351 This actually made me laugh pretty hard, because I actually *was* pointing it out in the same way as ThatsBrad. I was even adding that same info, but then I thought "is this really necessary? it's not like anyone's arguing with me here..." so I deleted what I had already typed of that part.
The androids' names were never given in the original. It was added in by TFS through an information book I believe that stated those as their names. That's why after Trunks staes that on the blueprint, Krillin asks if he made that up.

So, for some context, the reason why Cell is actively seeking out towns and drinking people is that he gains the power level of anything he absorbs.
The average earthling has a power level of 5 as seen from the farmer in the beginning of the series.
So considering towns have an average of 10,000 to 100,000 citizens, he can get anywhere from 50,000 to 500,000 power levels added to his base for evert town he absorbs.
That is the a power level of a ginyu force member or up to half the power of freiza's first form added for every town, much less the cities that have populations of millions.
Not to mention what he just absorbed from piccolo, who is currently stronger than a super saiyan.
So he is constantly gaining more power to add to his already considerable strength.
I feel like the absorption has to be a spirit bomb or fusion level power up rather than just additive. You have to consider Goku and Frieza were over 150 million on namek, and have only continued to grow, so cell would need to absorb a TON of towns to reach that point and beyond.
@Eno Yaka Goku was that strong because his base form was being boosted by his super saiyan form.
Cell has his own weird version of super saiyan, due to being partly saiyan, so I imagine every point of power he gets added to his base form makes his fighting one much stronger.

Yep, that was satisfying. Ken's wide-eyed stare and Bethany's look of disgust were so great. Scott Frerichs said that this is one of his favorite scenes, if for no other reason than it being so completely different from anything they've ever done before (or after, for that matter). His best has yet to come, but I will gladly state that Abridged Cell is my favorite villain of all time, across all mediums. Also, there is a shirt of Vegeta's "I Am The Hype" available on SharkRobot if you want it.

Now is a good time to watch the movie Super Android 13! And you know about Happy Cell-o-ween. The radioshow bit here is one of the most creative sequences in DBZA. Hosts "TJ and the Wombat" were in the History of Trunks Special and you'll hear from them one more time.

For the record: Trunks was not making that up: C17 is Lapis and C18 Lazuli like the gem. (both have blue eyes) and Android 16 is indeed build after Geros son.. more great details in the story mode of the first Dragon Ball Xenoverse game. And Dragon Ball Z Kakarot + Dragon Ball Fighterz
I sometimes forget how far they stretch the jokes. “Video Killed the Radio Star”, “Hungry like the Wolf”, “Killing Me Softly with His Song”, and “All By Myself”. And to top it off “Dead Man’s Party” is playing as he announces the lineup. The only thing missing was a picture of the Grim Reaper.
I love that tfs incorporated a bit of wishmasters personality into cell to make him the way he is, it fits perfectly
Taka (voice of Cell, Guru) said that he takes inspiration from several places, one of which was Zorak from Space Ghost and The Brak Show.
I can definitely see the Zorak inspiration during the bus scene.
TFS absolutely nailed Cell. They did a great job with all of Dragon Ball's villains.

I love this episode primarily because the interactions of Trunks and Krillin are amazing.
Fun fact that cell is was made to be scary and the theme around him was horror even in the original show, and lastly since you guys didn't figure out what they showed you in the last episode cell killed trunks and took his time machine that's why they gave a quick glimpse of cell and trunks before because it was already established that the time machine cell came into was the same exact time machine trunks use

Well, you now have two specials coming up that fit right between this and Episode 45. The first is the short Celloween Special, which has a direct tie-in to the story. You’ll see why. Second is the next movie, Super Android 13. You should definitely try to watch both before resuming the series (Celloween at bare minimum). I was dying by the end of the episode. I figure you had to mute/lower the volume for copyright reasons, but that made the following segment more comedic to me. Hearing the "I'll be right in" line and seeing your faces shift from intrigued attentiveness to deep concern and horror was far too funny. But I also gotta give credit where it's due because seeing people get drained was horrifying enough but HEARING it after seeing what it's like is just as horrifying, if not worse. They made it sound particularly gruesome there.
Yes we did cut it for the copyright reasons or at least lowered it. But it kind of works with the horror haha. 🤗

The horror is very deliberate to get it home that he is in fact, the bad guy, because when arc hits the fan, Cell hits so hard he quite literally breaks the meta and 4th wall so hard that it leaked over in the official material ala Beerus. (you'll meet him much later)
Makes sense because there have been couple of false starts with the old guy/clown androids and then 16-18. Cell is for sure a villain 😱

Fun fact 16 was gero's son. He was killed when Goku was a kid and attacked the red ribbon Army headquarters there Is a little Theory that he was killed in fray or by Goku which is why Gero created the androids

About here would be Android 13 movie, which yeah does not really fit into the series at all, but its still fun. and yeah of Cell's forms (which the opening song spoils anyway) this form is the creepiest of them in and out of official media. So combine Namekian with Frieza and you get a green Xenomorph, makes sense.

Interesting thing to note about Cell: his arc is the evolution of a serial ra**st. From jumping people to tricking people to charming people.

So how did Gero get Frieza's DNA? That bug the he used to spy on them was destroyed in the battle with the Saiyans. And he couldn't have got it from when Trunks killed him. Trunks was very thorough with killing both him and his father. If he knew Frieza was there he'd know about the Super Saiyan transformation.

You know. Krillin had a point. I sometimes forget how powerful krillin and the other earthlings are since we're surrounded by super Saiyans and super namekians all the time. Buuut now we have 4 androids out wrecking havoc so wonder how that's gonna play out.

believe it or not, Master Roshi in the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z comes off as more perverted then he is in DBZA. A lot more visual gags in the originals that emphasize just how dirty he is.
If you thought DBZA Cell was terrifying, you should see the original Cell. Unlike Abridged Cell, he doesn't tell any jokes/have any funny lines, he just comes off as more disturbing and horrific.
His aura that for whatever reason didnt show up in Abdridged is terrifying
