  • This video is showing pumpkins being harvested near Princeville Illinois. In this video I explain the process as these pumpkins are being harvested in the field and hauled off to the processing plant to be made into pumpkin pie filling.

    Thanks Mike, These farmers deserve a Rube Goldberg Award for the design of their pumpkin picker. Great landscape, pumpkins as far as the eye can see.

    The amazing thing to me is the kind of yield that they're getting out of that field. Can you imagine the tonnage involved with hauling and processing that material

    Really nice to see that there is some kind of food grown in America other than corn and soybeans.

    Very interesting. I saw some of this in southern Illinois this year and wondered how they wind-rowed these. Thanks for the video. Great work as always

    pumpkins around here are picked by hand, but they are also the ones that you buy to decorate. Melons are the same way.

    Looks like those pumpkins would burst open when they dump them on the carts and trucks

    I even don't dare to imagine how a pie made of pumpkins will taste . They belong , in my opinion , in the soup . Despite ,i liked this video. 😊

    Wow, ... never have seen anything like this! A couple of questions: The pumpkins seemed different than most I've seen - oblong, and not round. The variety must be unique being grown for processing. Secondly, I see a wheel (40" diameter?) behind the picking tractor, running in a plane perpendicular to line of travel. The wheel was rotating, kicking the pumpkins onto a conveyer chain, that moved them toward the front, to be dropped onto the loading elevator. Do you know more about the wheel that was doing the picking? Did it have simple paddles? Did it have spiked teeth that grabbed the pumpkins?
    Like to see the custom built gear, made for a specific purpose. Innovation at it finest, when the need arises to do a task more efficient.
    Thank you for sharing this unique job.

    But did you see the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Mike? Great stuff. Real livestock fodder. The commercial nursery across Alum Creek from me will rotate pumpkin crops that they plow down for fertilizer on fields they let lie fallow for a year or so. Of course, they sell some during late October, too.

    It's possible there are no Vines because they spray salt or something else natural on them to kill the vines. Someone asked about where all the vines were. That's what they do in California to prepare the rice field for picking. They use aerial salt spraying equipment

    do they ever have a problem with squashed pumpkins?

    • @Vfh........y
      @Vfh........y Před 5 lety

      I'm no Pro but I'm going to say it really doesn't matter. The first reason is when they go into the plant they are thoroughly washed and any dirt or sand would go through a screen where the pumpkin would not. It's probably some sort of detergent that's safe to use around fruits and vegetables in combination with very hot water so by the time they get cut up and processed I'm sure there's not much sand or dirt left. Just a guess

    • @farmhandmike
      @farmhandmike  Před 6 lety

      The plant dies off but the actual pumpkins will keep and they keep on picking until they get a really hard freeze. I also believe the windrower that ran ahead of the harvester helped beat the vines down.

    • @brianwebber7168
      @brianwebber7168 Před 6 lety

      TwoHappyChildrenFarm , these pumpkins are organic. They cultivate several times for weed control. I could be wrong ,but idoubt anything is sprayed to kill the vine.

      In a different video showing the harvesting of pumpkin seeds, the wind row machine also mulched the Vines up as it put the pumpkins into a windrow.

      @parkersadv Před 6 lety

      Brian Webber I live just outside of Morton and can't say I've ever associated a smell with Libby's. The ethanol plants, foundries, and other sure... but never Libby's.

      Parker Cline , Libbys/ Nestle owns ground off of Harding road with irrigation . On hot days while they are processing and pumping "water " an intense rotten odor can be smelled for miles. . Yes the ethanol plants have their own fragrance.

      @parkersadv Před 6 lety

      Brian Webber I have often wondered what that area was used for when I've driven by, but I've apparently managed to miss the smell. I always thought that area might be a sewage system similar to what some other municipalities do in central Illinois.
