I watched Bird in the 80's and instantly he became my favorite player. It wasn't for reasons that you may think. It was because I admired his way of playing. He wasn't the fastest but he would beat you to the ball. He couldn't jump real good but he would out rebound you. He seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Bird also has the ability to make his teammates better. He knew their strengths and put them in a position to succeed with what they did best. His basketball I.Q. was ridiculous. The NBA finals in the 80's- Celtics vs Lakers were some of the best games I ever seen . Magic and Bird's rivalry was great for the game. They saved the NBA. Bird mastered the basics of basketball and showed that you didn't have to jump 100 feet in the air to be successful. Being smart and knowing what to do in clutch situations can be the difference between a average player and a good one. I remember watching the time that Bird was running on a fast break. The ball was passed to him and he couldn't quite handle it and found himself behind the back board right at the base line. He shot the ball over the back board and into the basket. I never saw that before and thought it was such a great play because he had no time to think, just to react. Basketball I.Q. is so underrated and something you only see from the great ones. Bird was great, not good. A level ahead of everyone else. "LARRY LEGEND".

Bird took a second to last place team with only 21 wins, to 61 wins in his first year. Never has the NBA seen such a turnaround. Rookie of the year in 1980. Bird got 63 points; second place Magic-despite the Lakers championship-had only 3 votes.

That's right. The Celtics instantly became good when Bird arrived. People seem to forget that he made his teammates better. When the game was on the line and you needed a bucket, Bird delivered time and again. He made shooting the basketball fun. Kids used to drive to the basket and yell " DR. JAY" and then they stood behind the 3 point line and yelled " Bird". Magic and Bird saved the NBA. Those championship games they played against each other was some of the best basketball games I ever saw.

I think Bird is a goat, not the goat. I believe that there half dozen or maybe a dozen goats in NBA history. Bird was colorful and funny and heroic. A truly entertaining player to watch, he was just money as they say. I always enjoyed his repeated complaint, “Don’t put that white Boy on me. It’s disrespectful to my game.” I think that his comment was funny and respectful on so many levels. A truly beautiful commentary on race relations and I love the way it cracked black players up.

A decade filled with HoFers...Moses Malone , Kareem, Magic, James Worthy, Byron Scott, Dominque Wilkins, Isiah Thomas and the Bad Boys, Micheal Jordan, Hakee, Ralph Sampson, Charles Barkley, Dr. J, Alex English, Benard King, Sidney Moncrief, for a time DJ, Clyde Drexler, Adrian Dentley (the Boston Strangler)...sure I am missing some but Most teams, especially on the Eastern Conference were t stacked with 3 to 5 HoFers. The West less so, that explains Larry only getting 5 appearances and 3 rings.
Context is the key, and you cannot be bothered to do research then you are willfully ignorant.
And, I'm guessing you are a LeBron fan, eh? Larry has 3 back to back to back MVPs. in 12 YEARS! How long did take LeBron to get his 4 rings? Larry did all his work in 12.
Stop being bias and learn something about the past. Because they wore short shorts, doesn't mean they couldn't hoop. And it certainly doesn't mean they couldn't hoop today. No touch
league? Larry would have a field day.

Three consecutive league MVPs, three consecutive 3 point shooting contest wins, won 3 out of 4 NBA games he played in, made the post season every year, made the eastern conference finals his rookie year and won the championship his second year. From '84-'87 averaged at least 50/40/90 shooting, 27 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, winning two championships in that stretch. And this was with a screwed up back, which was injured in '85. Not dominant enough? Who else has a similar resume? Nineties Jordan, maybe, but not Curry, Kobe, KD, or anyone else I can think of.
