Steve Erceg perhaps just had the biggest fumble in UFC championship history against Alexandre Pantoja right at the end of the fight. Up there with Weidman vs Rockhold and his infamously missed spinning back kick. Two of the judges had it as a tie going into the last round. So no doubt about it, those takedowns cost him the fight.

@@nme_mma really impressive from Erceg, showed potential as a future champion - once he tightens up the grappling and gets some more experience, I see him being a champ but it also depends on the cut. Not sure he can do many more fights at 125, may try to move up and that division has some tricky matchups for him..
That Steve seems like he has a big future in the sport. But if dude lives up to his hype and claims a place at the top of the sport for a good amount of time...I really think he is going to need a cool nickname. I think "over-takedowning" is a thing I've noticed a lot in MMA lately. Guys will rattle someone with strikes and instead of finishing them on the feet, they'll go for the takedown or submission win and it backfires.
yeah its weird, its almost like thats what they drill for in these camps. I'm not sure why though, theres definetly something behind that.
Aldo did it last night too.

Huge missed opportunity there. This video implies he will go to boxing instead. But there is only one reason for Aldo to NOT retire in Rio last night, and that is because he plans on returning to MMA. Very greedy move.

Something about this video was so perfectly paced and intriguing in the way it was delivered.
It was a robbery, not a blunder. Why do we continue to pretend that the criteria isn't damage based?? Takedowns and control time don't mean anything if you don't do anything with them.
Yep
Yep steve clearly had the more effective striking, while pantoja had 0 effective grappling.
Honestly I don’t agree w damage being the main factor in judging an mma fight. Too many martial arts that are control/position based instead of pure damage. To me personally, it reinforces the sport more towards certain striking arts.
To me I believe fights should be judged by how the combatant can implement his gameplan more effectively than his opponent.
Grappling means nothing if you do nothing with it but it means something if your opponent does nothing because of the grappling. Pantoja outlanded him and won the 5th
The rules score dominant positions for fighters if they are pressing for a submission and that’s not what Alex was doing.

Erceg balled out. Great performance
Literally paid no attention to what little discourse there was for 301. Hell, I didn’t even know there was a show yesterday until I got bored at work and put Fight Pass on, after the early prelims had started.
301 was one of those shows you’re glad to have watched for free
very surprising card, i had low spectations but it really delivered. this shows that ufc its the best not only for marketing but for quality.
Pantoja won this 48-47 and the quantity of takedowns and control where the difference maker. Erceg had some good moments on the feet but he did miss a chunk of his overall strikes and he never hurt Alex. Damage is key but It's accumulative damage and you don't win a round or a fight automatically from a cut. Those 2 cuts came from one strike a piece and they never got significantly worse. Erceg simply did not land enough consistent shots to clearly take the majority of rounds and he spent a good chunk of time on his back and getting his back taken. Let's not pretend that Alex didn't land solid shots on his Blitz's either, he did. So all together Alex simply did more.
Erceg had a mad impressive performance. You could argue he was tied going into the last. I thought it was 3-1 Pantoja going into the 5th but that’s just me. He definitely gave Alexandre a tough fight and for a guy that was basically a nobody 2 months ago. Hats off to him, excited to see him back. I have a feeling he’ll be champ soon enough.

Where does this love for erceg come from sheesh?
When I watched Pantoja vs Erceg, I don't know why I remembered the robbery that happened to Dominick Reyes vs Jon.
Nah, Erceg shooting the takedowns wasn't like Chris or Chael. It was the same as Kelvin Gastelum shooting on a rocked Izzy.
I think it was anybody's fight but Pantoja won over more accumulated strikes.
Damage has to be accumulated.
Just because you get elbowed once and bleed out does not mean that's enough damage. If this is the case Diaz brothers would lose every fight.

@runbho710 Erceg didn't win but he had much more effective and damaging striking. He was landing the cleaner, harder shots. He just threw it all away with his low IQ decision to keep shooting takedowns and getting reversed.
You're right! Erceg lost 4-1 clearly. Thank you for continuing to cope and continuing to bet and lose your money
For what it's worth, it's kinda nice that the title fight gave us something interesting to talk about. I honestly thought UFC 301 would be an absolutely nothing event at first, given how ridiculously high they set the bar last time

Any PPV after 300 was going to look ordinary. Some familiar names, I'm glad Smith is making the most of this win so he can maybe have an epic ride into the sunset. Michel Pereira is a wildman. Glad to see he's bounced back off of those Connelly and Sanchez episodes. They should put him against a ranked guy.
Watching this to catch up because I didn’t see the fights
I think Erceg's loss is partially on his inexperience but mostly on his coaches for discouragingly misleading him on his biggest night leading him to make rash decisions.
Even then, Erceg still should’ve won 3-2 or 4-1
sure everyone was at fault but the judges not understanding the rules
I'm sure they told him he was 3 rounds down at one point. I figured Erceg thought he'd best change his tactics since, according to his own coaches, he wasn't winning on the feet.
He was clearly the better fighter too imo. Damage should’ve been enough for 2,3,4 but it’s okay. He’s easily a future champ.
I don’t really think it’s fair to say Erceg blew it. Pantoja is one of the more dominant champions we have right now. It’s not like Erceg had it completely in the bag.
Also, the card on 302 is doodoo except for the main and co-main.

Feel like Erceg won 2, 3 & 4 honestly. It was competitive enough that it doesn't feel like a robbery though (though some of the scoring was a bit wonky).
i didnt know pantoja was defending the bantamweight belt lmao
Erceg did not blunder. Like he said himself, Erceg was trying to score a round in a close fight. Erceg is an AUS national wrestling champion. He said in his post-fight that he was surprised by Pantojas ability to scramble, an area where he usually dominates. Erceg didn’t throw away the fight. He was playing to win.

I am watching the video to figure out what happened
I don't doubt he will return and one day be champ, but that 5th round....couldn't help but shout come on man you are so close
Why does everything have to be “is this the blah blah blah ever in history???”
Erceg shows he has skills just not the HIGHEST fight IQ, obviously his fight IQ is up there because its not like he got ragged on (although i was alittle concerned the first minute of the first round with how pantoja came out the gate on speed 11) This was a huge learning experience for him though and he will be back, the kid is 28. Can't wait to see him at 32 with a shit ton of fights in the ufc. Youi figure if he fights atleast another 2 times per year then thats 8 more fights in the UFC, double of what hes at now.
Remember how when this fight was announced everyone was pissed and said "Who Is This Guy?" "This guy has no chance" and "What about Abazzi?" and the Erceg almost won. I'd imagine those guy are silent right now.

Competitive fights can still have a clear winner
I thought the elbows in the 5th that reopened the cuts on Pantoja caused enough damage to overcome the control time. Erceg was on the bottom but he was soaked in blood by the end and none of it was his. I'll have to watch it again though
While the event turned out better than I expected, it was weak for a PPV. The matchmaking had most of the fights as obvious picks. The only real surprise was Anthony Smith pulling off a big win when it was clear that he was there to give Petrino a win over a big name opponent whose career was winding down. And yeah, you could pinpoint the exact decision that cost Erceg the belt. Pantoja had the experience to capitalize on the mistake. Despite the loss, I wouldn't be surprised if Erceg moves up a spot or two in the rankings. He only needs about two good wins to earn another title shot.
A spot or two? He should be Top 5 at the very least. Make him #1 contender for that robbery tbh.
