Pond Clearing & Stocking Hybrid Bream

  • So, the purpose of my pond is to have a nice fishing hole, add beauty to my property, provide emergency water, provide water for gardening/orchard, and provide a source of fish protein. There are a few videos of when it was being dug last winter and it has been stocked with fathead minnows for about 10 months now. I see their babies so it supports life, but it needed significant work to support an ecosystem. It had too much clay particles suspended in it which prevents algae growth. Being silty, the pond cannot perform properly. Well, I waited and waiting didn't get the job done so i decided to tackle it. I used aluminum sulfate to bind the clay particles and make them drop to the bottom of the pond and clarify the water more. Because aluminum sulfate lowers PH, I had to counter that with calcium carbonate. Both will not harm the fish, but drastic changes in PH can. I stocked the pond with hybrid bream because it is a smaller body of water and are better suited for catfish or hybrids. Hybrids are fun to catch and taste great. Instead of putting catfish in, I'll add Tilapia later on, but that's another video. I'll introduce bass in the fall to keep the hybrid bream offspring in check. Hybrids do not produce true-to-type offspring and the bass will love 'em along with the fatheads. I love chatting with folks and answering questions. If you enjoy my videos, please like, comment and subscribe!

    Brent: Big difference of the water after the treatment. You will have a lot of fun with all those fish in your pond. We have a small cement fish pond at our home and we use to have about 130 goldfish in it. Eight years ago while we were on vacation a giant Blue Heron visited our pond and ate the all. First time since we moved here in 1978 that we ever had the problem. Our neighbor told us what had happened and why we had large white stains all over our black roof. Oh Well! Bernard

    You must add sand and gravel (or river stones) to cover the bottom and the shore before adding alum because alum just binds the clay together chemically, at minimal disturbance the compound formed blends again. By "sealing" the soil with sand and said heavy sediments you lock the clay underneath and the one that deposits later over the sand "cover" can be vacuumed.

    the first ting you should do is check water temperatures in the bag and the pond . if the water in the pond is less than the water in the bag , you can just release the fish . if there is good difference and the pond water is warmer , then you NEED to add water slowly to the bag until the waters are really close in temperature . that allows the fish to pump air OUT of their tiny swim bladders as it increases in pressure due to the warming of the water . it's not hard to work them in once you understand what happens to a fish when you warm them up quickly . the fathead minnows like to stick their eggs to the underside of smooth surfaces in shallow water . (picture a lily pad )

    Mr Brent I had to use gymson after two year and in one week it was beautiful. I know it has been a long time passing but I noticed it went back muddy for you. I have a one acor pond Ithey told me no problem to put 500 hybread bream and 500 channel cats. so I did. but for the life of me cant hardly catch a fish out of it. I have feed them and not a lot of feeding frenzy go on. can fish die and never surface?

    • @C3Voyage
      @C3Voyage  Před 6 lety

      Yes, it does muddy after a rain, but clears up, well pretty good still. What did you use and how much of it? Cost?
      I feed my fish very late afternoon right after sun goes over the trees but still daylight more or less. I have much less fish you than you do and the feeding frenzy is very noticeable. Yours should be incredible. What time do you feed? Do you feed daily? Feeder? How long ago did you stock? Did you stock cats and bream at the same time? If so, your cats will eat all the bream within a year. They grow much faster. Even now, I'm fishing out a bunch of cats because my bream population is too small for me. Have you fished for the cats in the evening (liver/chicken)?
      Seems odd to lose all of your fish and none show up unless they're being eaten, but I'm not a professional pond guy so I'm just shooting from the hip here.

I have caught many cats and bream and shellcrachers from other lakes and put them in but still hard to catch. now we can catch bream pretty fair but cats are very heard. I am building cat traps now to see if that works. I am in north louisiana

      @@rodneywroten2994 I am in the Houston area I rented a Cat trackhoe dug out a 3/4 acre pond over 3 day weekend. I stepped it down 3' then out 10 then down 5' then down another 10' so the deepest point was 23. It was my plan to install a water pump to recirculate the water from bottom to top and add a couple of aerators then some sonotubes to support a gazebo I wanted to build partially over the pond. After digging the pond I noticed water beginning to come up out the ground when I stopped digging there was about a foot of pretty Bluegreen water at the bottom of the pond. Exactly 6 days later it rained 27 inches in 24 hours totally flooding the entire property except where I move the dirt from the pond to the area where I plan to build the house and barn. So the thing filled up in one day. Later I stocked it with hybrid bluegill and
      channel cat. Now that pond is totally stratified. I will double the size it took it about 12 yrs to get this was when I redo it I will put in about 200 Hybrid bluegill, and a couple thousand fathead minnows, wait for 2 yrs then add the catfish and fingerling bass. The last time I put them all in at the same time It did not take long for those catfish and bass to chew them up. You see the bluegill reproduced but they could never live long enough to reach full size, not did I have adequate cover for the smaller fish to hide which is very important.
      I will build a couple floating habitats designed to give the small fish a place to hide from the predators. My pond was so deep I was able to drop about 6 Christmas trees in one area which was great it's better to wait until all the green is dead and gone. My fish were doing great but because I had no way to recirculate the water or add oxygen it suffered. Now I am ready to get it done again. But this time nothing goes in for the first 2 yrs but the bluegill and minnows allowing a healthy population of these feedstocks before I add
      the about 50 largemouth bass and 100 catfish because they reproduce fast and abundantly. That bass will eat a fish everything in the pond and brim is excellent catfish bait. I see a 4-inch bass with a 3-inch brim hanging out of the mouth. So the moral of my story is if you do not have cover your hybrids wont live long enough to reach full size, your pond will be full of very small Hybrids, the same applies to the minnows. In my case, none of the hybrids ever reached full size because of pressure from the bass and the catfish.

      Yes and no. It can get to be an issue, but probably not like what you're thinking. Hybrid bluegill do not produce like bluegill. Hybrids are 80-90% male and the offspring are very poor quality. Still, it's recommended to put a small number of bass in there to keep any offspring produced eaten. With hybrids, you actually have to pay attention to what you take out and restock every year or two. Here's an article on the differences of Hybrid to Bluegill: www.keystonehatcheries.com/Articles.asp?ID=307
      I also followed the stocking plan recommended in several places: Stock with fathead minnows first. Did that no long after the pond was done, last spring. Two months or so later, hybrid bream, or about one year ago. Bass and catfish a year later to let bream get bigger and fatheads to increase in great number. I have tons of fatheads now and the bream are about 4-5" now. Timely your comment too because I stocked the pond with 25 largemouth and 100 cats about a week ago! They said if I feed, I can stock with up to 100 cats for my size pond too, but I'd need to feed. I am feeding. I sure love this pond.
      All this feedback is great for those who tune in. Thanks Connor!
