best song against arranged marriages ever! :) no girl should get stuck with being raped by a 62-year-old, drunk, abusive husband just because some angry old matchmaker has forced her to marry him. Yenta is so vicious. I'm glad she failed to torture these girls. I hope she ends up dead for all the torture she put girls though in her job matching young women with old abusive drunk men.
What an amazing ensemble of young actresses. They sing and act incredibly well. The whole scene is a masterpiece of its own. Take a look at this subtle movement in the beginning of the scene...
Tzeitel imitating Yente cracks me up every time. She's got her movements and mannerisms down so well. Also this song rings true for every teenage girl whose ever day-dreamed about getting married.
Everyone dreams of prince charming but at the same most people these days understand reality enough so by the time they are old enough they don't want an actual fairytale romance just someone who wonderful in their own way who will support them through the good and bad. Though I did hear about a girl who wrote a list of what qualities she wanted in her dream guy and she got a boyfriend who was that but he found out about the list and got mad and dumped her. Don't get it myself considering you think someone would be flattered that someone thinks that highly of them. Its not she did anything besides make a list of qualities and he just happened to fit them. She wasn't looking for prince charming but someone wonderful in their own way.
Dreams come true just often enough to keep people dreaming. I'm sure that at least one teacher said something like: "Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, you are NOT going to grow up and marry Prince William!"

I just love this song because it's so accurate. In all the fairy tales, arranged marriages for the most part end well, but this song brings to light the real struggles of arranged marriages. I have nothing against them as long as the two end up happy, but I love seeing the girls naïveté diminish over the course of the song. It's very true.
A lot of arranged marriages are forced marriages in disguise. But you do get people who genuinely want that for themselves for reasonss of their personal choice
And it can be that the marriage was/is at least partly arranged by the couple themselves. Sometimes it only *looks* like somebody else chose for them, instead of them. For the look of the thing, you know. 😉

@Gregor Baby: That's what my friend Rachel thought when she was 10 or 11 and she is an oldest and used to occasionally pick on her younger sister. So, this may be a case of "it takes one to know one". 😉😜😘 Actually I don't really think they are trying to pick on Chava (who is presumably at least 13 here so I think she can defend herself well enough if she wants to). I think they are really mostly just trying to make a point. But whenever I see this I remember Rachel saying, "They're being mean to her." Maybe. Sort of. But I don't think it was actually intentional.
I think they were trying to protect her (Chava) if anything. From her own innocence. Which she probably does need protecting from. I can see how it could seem sort of mean though. 😕
This song gives me chills. I remember me and my friends singing this as loud as we could while running around the yard. I always sang the part where I chased them around singing about the great matches I found for them. Fortunately, both of them actually found great guys and one of them has 4 adorable kids.
I think Hodel actually had the better voice. Later in the movie, she goes by train to Siberia, where Perchik is imprisoned, to marry him. Tevye sits with her at the stop, and she sings a beautiful, poignant number, "Far From the Home I Love". Her voice is so pure and touching.
Chava is my favorite sister. I love Tzeitel's part in this song, though. "Hotel! Oh, Hotel, have I made a match for you! He's handsome; he's young!--Alright, he's sixty-two."

I love this song Tzeitle is hilarious when she mimics the matchmaker haha although I do feel sorry for the redhead sister when they tell her she's not going to find a "prince" because they're poor! xxx
Chava was always my favorite out of the daughters. I guess because she's the middle child, and I can related to her. Plus, her voice is gorgeous. This is one of the most memorable songs in both the film & play, IMO.
The irony is not so much that they chose their husbands, but the path they took that came with their husbands. Chava's especially when you know what happens 30 years after this period...

Fantastic, classic song. This movie is a shining example of what children should grow up watching. Excellent values, and teaches life lessons still pertinent today. Fiddler On The Roof is one of my favorite musicals I have known these songs since before I was in high school and I have been singing them for years matchmaker is one of the best songs in this musical although they are all good songs I love the way that this production number was filmed everything about this movie was first rate thanks for posting this scene from a wonderful Musical
a Match, Interesting, He's 62, Handsome, Tall, Take your time,No Rush
I love Fiddler on the Roof.. But I'm so glad that this time and age we don't get our guys like that and be stuck for good with them XD
Hodel is the prettiest sister of them all.
Totally!!!
I'm a Tzeitel fan myself. They're all adorable, though.
CHAVA
One of my favorite musicals! Great movie!
My friends and I sing this all the time...our Orchestra class is going to see this onstage this Saturday. We're so excited!
Such a wonderful tune and scene, a truly classic film.
I sang this in my high school's spring musical. I was a senior that year. brings back memories.
The irony is not so much that they chose their husbands, but the path they took that came with their husbands. Chava's especially when you know what happens 30 years after this period...
Yente means gossip in Yiddish, I've known a few old women who've made it their business to pair up as many young people as possible and they've all been very gossipy
Just wanna say, love the ginger's voice. It was beautiful
Fantastic, classic song. This movie is a shining example of what children should grow up watching. Excellent values, and teaches life lessons still pertinent today.
This song in particular is good for girls because *this* is how they should be thinking, *not* "I need to give this guy head or he won't like me anymore"
This is the 1st time I heard many of these songs...& I LOVE THEM!!!
Everyone knows If l Were a Rich Man, but many others r new to me. & as a single woman who's alone & fits their description of being alone at night & having standards, l love the lyrics. & the MELODY IS THE BEST!!!
Thank you so much for uploading these! I'm not in Fiddler on the Roof (I have terrible stage fright) but I'm the assistant stage manager, so I'm basically in charge of props/scenes/costumes/actors, so I need to learn all the music so I know just when certain cues are, and this is ever so helpful! ^___^
What a wonderful piece of art....
This song is absolutely beautiful.
Chava’s confused face: My confused life in a nutshell
All the girls look pretty, but Hodel (the middle girl) is beautiful.
OH maann.....thank you thank you thank you!!! I'm hearing impaired and been wanting a video with subtitles to understand what they're singing. BLESS YOU!!!
It wasn't till highschool till I began (emphasis on the word began) to notice and realize that as a believer and a person who trusts God, God should (emphasis on the word should) be my matchmaker.
“Slender and pale” is pretty much every Slavic man
1:48 mimicking the matchmaker. LOLZ
That's the bit that made Tzeitel my favorite. HILARIOUS!
Such a wonderful film played by superior actors.
I love this song!the play is AWESOME
2:52 Omg, I would love to have a gorgeous red mane like Chava's! 😍
I'm performing this with two of my friends, and I'm singing Chava's part; after seeing this, I'm soooo excited!!!!
I love this scene so much! The last few seconds are espcially good!
I love this whole scene!!!! It's deffinitely my favorite of the whole movie!!
I love how it starts with ‘matchmaker make me a match’, and ends with ‘matchmaker plz gtfo and leave me alone’ xDDD
i love that movie!
I love this song. I saw the musical for the first time yesterday and I love it :)
one of the best movies i've ever seen!!!i have seen it millions of times!!i like most chava's voice!!! it's perfect!!
My high school performed this musical when I was in the Orchestra!
I love this movie and this has always been my favorite song from it. It's just one of those songs that's almost always in my head, so I'm singing it quite often. Only downside is I still haven't memorized all the words so i sing about half of it lol
Superb songwriting! Bring back the musicals!
The look on their faces at "it's just that I'm terrified" is priceless
being pale meant that the man was more intellectual and not someone who does hard labor. id love to do a production of this musical.
When my friends are singing Hamilton and Be More chill and I’m just in the corner like “MATCH MAKER MATCH MAKER!”
My son (2) and i love Hamilton and Fiddler on the roof
Dez Biggs 🥰that’s absolutely lovely ❤️
Why not both? Imagine this song and then “Satisfied “ right afterwards.
Well I am singing all three as well as Grease and Westside Story
I mean, my two favorite musicals are "Fiddler on the roof" and "Heathers", so....
just love this movie/play. First time I saw it was in High school, we put it on as a production. I was on the stage crew, so much fun!!
Charming.
Thanks for uploading.
