Hannover Adventure Zoo: SEA LION training in YUKON BAY 💦 | zoos.media

At Hannover Adventure Zoo, we attended sea lion training in Yukon Bay and were able to see how the animals learn behavior, which they then show in the seal show or need as husbandry behaviors. Zookeeper Stefanie Leitner introduces us to sea lion lady Pamela - she is considered the most intelligent sea lion in the harbor.
Pam, as Pamela is also known, is a Californian sea lion lady, who was born in Karlsruhe Zoo, lives since summer 2008 in Adventure Zoo Hannover and caretaker Stefanie Leitner demonstrates how intelligent the sea lion is. Pam lives together with the gray seals and the northern fur seals in the harbor installation of the theme world Yukon Bay.
All seals are trained on a voluntary basis basing on the principle of positive reinforcement and have a great relationship with the zoo keepers. So, they can learn a lot, what they demand physically and mentally, which in turn increases their well-being.
Visitors love the pinniped show, which combines educational elements with entertaining ones to encourage people to protect the animals. So, they teach the audience about the biology of the animals and appeal to the audience to not pollute their habitat.
A show like this, which follows the principle of edutainment, is not possible without training and this can be greatly included in the enrichment of the animals. Stefanie Leitner explains in the interview very exactly and directly how she works with Pam and the other sea lions.
Sea lions are a great example of how the presence at the zoo can influence the perception of animals: once hated and hunted as vermin, sea lions are now popular animals because they have long been present in zoos and so their skill and intelligence ist well known.

Pam is therefore an important ambassador of her species, but also of her habitat, which is increasingly threatened by environmental pollution. Although her species is now doing better, the habitat suffers and, of course, the wild sea lions will be influenced by that sooner or later.

Ein kleines Update:
Inzwischen sind zwei Jungbullen in Yukon Bay eingezogen. Sie müssen aber noch ein Weilchen wachsen, bevor aus ihnen stattliche Seelöwenbullen werden. 😉
