A clip is inserted into a magazine
Clips were used in ww1 up till today... they don’t have springs but hold rounds and you take a clip and put them in to the magazine so you don’t have to place each individual round in the magazine
i imagine for the first semi auto guns they could have used the mag but put it in the top of the gun so gravity does the work
