How to find a tendon tear

Tendon tears usually occur after a traumatic event, usually finger tendon tears happen after trying to grab something heavy or after a fall.
There are some tendon tears that have been issociated to medication or antibiotics usage.
Usually if the tendon is torn, the only way to fix it is through surgical tendon repair.
One of the problems we have with tendons, specifically in the hand is that sometimes is hard to identify exactly where the tendon was torn. Sometimes we have to open the whole hand in order to identify the two torn edges in order to repair it. Another problem is that the tendon retracts when time and is sometimes hard to find on MRIs.
Ultrasound is a fast, accurate and inexpensive way to help the surgeon identify when the edges of the torn tendon would be, therefore making the incision and repair more accurate.
 In this video, Dr. Gonzalez from the Institute of Regenerative Orthopedic & Sports Medicine, uses ultrasound to identify the exact location of the flexor tendon tear and communicate with the referring hand surgeon to collaborate in helping this patient return to function with his hand.
