It follows violent anti-government protests sparked by the federal government's decision to dissolve regional special forces.

International media must understand the real problem in order to report the news accurately.
Currently, the Amhara people are opposing the government, but not solely because of the disarmament of special forces. The Amhara people are fighting because they are victims of a government-sponsored, brutal, ethnic-based attack. Dozens have been slaughtered and burnt alive. Amhara homes have been demolished, leaving many homeless. Despite calls from humanitarian organizations to stop the demolitions, the government has refused and even ordered another. Currently, Amhara's in Ethiopia are under govt sponsored ethnic-based attacks.They are becoming homeless and hopeless by the administration of Abiy Ahmed. Dozens of Amharas have been brutally killed & dehumanized, $ their homes have been demolished solely based on their ethnicity

What Al Jezeera and the international community needs to know about the purpose behind the protests in the Amhara region by the Amhara people or Special Forces and Fanos is due to lack of decisive plan, roadmap, clear communication, and proper safeguard of the Amhara region/people against OLF and TPLF (rebel forces or factions). In essence, the government of Abiy Ahmed has no granted mandate or power to dissolve the Special forces without parliamentary action plan which needs to be also backed by the genersl public and the institution pertinent to that force as well as the regional government. Furthermore, grievances also need to be met following a thorough action plan and discussion. But that has never been done. In short, the government of Abiy Ahmed, and Abiy Ahmed himself, took a wrong path/illegitimate directive, which is why the people of Amhara at large are protesting as such and in large magnitude. Also, another critical factor to this revolution is that the Amhara people in different parts of Ethiopia, especially in Oromia region, Benishangul Gumuz region, Addis Ababa municipal city, have been displaced, killed, chased, abandoned, demonized, and mistreated.

The uprising in Amhara region has a deeper cause than the ostensible government explanation. PM Abiy wants to carry out 'The scramble for Amhara' - grabbing a huge chunk of Amhara land and incorporate it into Oromia and the rest into Tigray depriving Amharas homeland and relegating them to poverty and outcast. The dehumanization and impoverishment of Amharas have been going on surreptitiously for the last five years with a devious guidance of PM Abiy. On the surface, it appears disbandment of regional force, but in reality, it is to intensify the genocide against Amhara people.

Thank you Aljazera for reporting the voice of voiceless Amharas being killed and displaced day in day out. Abiy Ahmed has proved time and again that he is not capable of leading this great nation of 115 million people. His war with TPLF has resulted in loss of over 600 000 Ethiopians just a year ago. As a Somali Ethiopian, I see the reason why the Amhara community might be sceptical of dissolution of their regional army but the federal government also has a point. The country has been through two years of a deadly civil war started by a regional army that was allowed to misuse government resources and build an alternative army that almost destroyed the national army and a lot of Ethiopian civilians have died in the process mostly in Amhara, Tigray and Afar regions but also in other regions like Oromia. The current system of having regional forces that are more powerful than the national army is not sustainable and it can start yet another deadly civil war anytime if the government has disagreements with another region. While I completely understand why many regions like Amhara will not want to let go of what they feel is their only security against other regions or national government overreach, I think this process needs to happen for a unified nation to be born but I disagree how the national government is approaching the situation. If there is anything we learnt from the last 2 years, it is that after 30 years of TPLF polarizing society to stay in power, the country is very fragile and any reckless action taken can easily start another civil war. Therefore the federal government should let regional governments keep their special forces but with less power. They should hand over all their heavy equipments to the federal forces and a slow process of fading the regional forces should start. Offer more incentives to join the national army and let the multiyear process of slowly reducing regional forces continue. It can even take 20 years but if carefully managed by subsequent governments, I am sure it will be successful. In the meantime the constitution needs to also slowly evolve during this time to accommodate the change in policies. Trying to destroy the regional forces in one stroke of a pen is like trying to take your entire dinner in one bite. The outcome might not be pleasant.

Harar is already taken over; Dire Dawa is also in the process with the words of Abiy; Sidama has already lost 3 woredas; and same thing with Gurage, Afar, Benishangul, and Gambella. Abiy has been fooling Ethiopians for five years. Now, he is facing the moment of truth.

@@abnurnuab3475 I think it is an unfortunate situation and don’t forget Somali militiamen are also committing the same in Oromia and Afar regions even if the damage may not be proportional. I think regional governments have for a long time tolerated hooliganism and people taking matters into their own hands to attack other regions and sometimes even encouraged their actions. This needs to change. Blaming one side or the other is not the solution, the solution is realize in this part of Ethiopia where Oromia, Somali and Afar regions intersect most people are nomadic pastoralists who are constantly on the move and they will cross the regional borders knowingly or unknowingly in search of water and pastures. There has to be some tolerance and understanding between communities and politicians should not be allowed to weaponize those incursions to gain political power.

Any Amhara living in Ethiopia is now endangered by the Abiy Ahmed regime. If you carefully listen to Abiy's speech, he is mostly inconsistent, with many lies, and divisive. Every time he addresses the public, the next day or week you have Amhara massacre somewhere. And after the incident, he rarely addresses it at all, and if he does the PM defends the criminals or will say Oromos are also killed or will say there is death in America too "What is special here" kind of answer ....=> he uses all the means to cover up the killings.
The world has to realize this man is not normal and because of his decisions millions have lost their lives and many more are endangered now more than ever.
In the past 4 years, with no exaggeration, I have never seen a day without an Amhara massacre especially in Oromia and Benshangul adjust region to Oromia and almost none are reported by any media except local CZcamsrs and radios. Now the ethnic cleansing has reached Addis Ababa where tens of thousands of Amhara houses have been demolished by the government (no prior notification, not even allowed to pack their household furniture and valuables).

Regional forces and regional militias are two different armed groups,regional forces are legalized by the government like liyu police which is allowed to operate freely in their territory and keep security and stability under control of federal government.militias are created by group of people for their own benefit and they are not registered as a force by the government, they are not needed they can cause chaos in the system of governance. I don’t think abiy will disband the regional forces,that is part of federalism thanks brother,a complete and equal disarmament of all outlaws militias should be disbanded and carried out through out the whole country thank you once again

Reasons the Amhara found the disarmament request really bazzare and out of place because:
1- The Amhara forces were the first to respond when TPLF forces massacred the national army.
2- ONEG Shene, a rebel group in western Oromia has been targeting the Amhara population living in Oromia in an ongoing massacre that neither the national army nor the Oromo special forces have been willing to stop.
3- The actual group that caused the country to descend in to a civil war has yet to still disarm. I'm referring to the TPLF army here.
4- In an era where other regional forces especially the Oromo regional special forces haven't disarmed, why are they asking only the Amhara to disarm.
5- The Amhara people have also refused to dissolve their regional special forces in a time the Abiy regime wants to give the ancestral Amhara lands of Welkait to Tigray.

In reality, there is no Ethiopian army, it is Oromo (OLF) army which is pillaging and murdering the Amhara people. In practice, it is only the Amahra forces who are ordered to lay down their weapons. We call upon the international community to put pressure on the Abiy regime to stop the massacre and marginalization of the Amhara people!!

So many Amhara ethnic group have been killed since Prime Minister Abby Ahmed came to power the international community need to step in before the worst civil war breaks out. The Amhara people have every right to defend themselves from the regime of Prime Minister Abby Ahmed.
Disarming regional military forces is one of the very few, if not the only, good things the Ethiopian government is doing. I hope the government will not back down to the nuisance of the ultra-Amhara nationalists.

Aljazira needs to correct the information on what the Abiy Administration is doing. The Abiy Administration is not planning to reintegrate the Spcial Forces of Amhara but to disarm and demobilize. Secondly, the plan is not being implemented in other Regional States. The Oromoya Regional State, which trained the largest number of Special Forces didn't do anything regarding this move. Reintegration is the propaganda crafted following mass protests in Amhara Region. Aljazira needs to check the facts in other Regional States.
