1977 … I was a senior in high school. I remember watching this broadcast with these legendary announcers. I was a big Watson fan. Forty-six years ago… sometimes it seems like forever, but most of the time it seems like last night.

    Announcers - 1977
    11 & 12: Pat Summerall
    13: Jack Whitaker
    14: Ken Venturi
    15: Ben Wright
    16: Jim Thacker
    17: Frank Glieber
    18: Vin Scully
ALSO -- You may happen to notice the quirky audio. This was the byproduct of a nationwide coax cable/microwave relay system used by CBS-ABC-NBC to transmit their programming across the country since the 1950s. In early 1978, improvements were introduced which gave the audio a more natural quality. By the 1980s, the networks were transmitting their programs nationwide with satellites.
Even with the quirky audio, Frank Glieber's call of Tom Watson's birdie on 17 is the most beautiful thing you'll ever hear.

Tiger was/is without doubt one of the two best players ever. But unlike Tiger, Jack had to beat guys that would punch back. Palmer, Casper, Player, Trevino, Watson, Ballesteros, Miller. All multiple major winners and supreme competitors.

Bobby Jones won 40% of all the majors he ever played in. Tiger has won 17% - if he would have beaten Hogan, Nicklaus and all the other great players so easily, why couldn't he have won 40% of the majors he played in like Jones?

    • @edchapman5801

Actually - Jones won 7 of the 16 US and British Opens he entered, just under 44% - no one else is even close - he dominated like no other player and his numbers prove it.

Everyone else had scores of 280, 282 , and higher. Watson and Nicklaus were out there in front with a decent lead over the field.

When Jack & Tom we’re playing there were only about a dozen players in the field each time who were capable of winning.
That’s why Player, Trevino etc were able to win so many majors and build their reputations.
Woods had to beat much deeper, stronger fields where about fifty guys were capable of winning at the start of the week.
It’s what makes Woods’ achievements so incredible.

He had some one offs that he beat in tight matches--Bob May and Rocco Mediate--and one who beat him--YE Yang. That's about it. Not one great player that stepped up. I personally think that the personalities of Jack's day were tougher and more competitive. They weren't coddled and weren't collecting much for finishing 20th. Vin is well prepared but so much so at times I thought he spoke a bit too much. With golf, I like some quiet more so than baseball and other sports. That said, he’s the King of broadcasting and will be so for many decades ahead.

In those days you had to use the caddies from the Augusta National.
It wasn’t till later that players could use their own caddies
