No. Mr. Ross is actually a master of his craft. This soyboy would be the equivalent of a 2 year old splashing paint all over the paper. He's a hack who believes in treating dogs like children of Middle Age English royalty. You will NEVER see him dealing with an aggressive dog. Because he doesn't know how to. All he and other new age dog "trainers" know how to do is tell a dog c'mere, give it a treat, and say g'boy.

He's very talktative in the book about his dog training experiences with several different breeds over the years. When he does get to the training chapters, you need to read more slowly, take mental or written notes and try to apply his advice to your pet. That's where i'm at now. Another review is in order aftet i've trained my blue mountain shepherd with brandon mcmillan's method.
My dog has had separation anxiety since he was a puppy. A huge change for us was when we teached him, when we leave is when he gets his kong full of freezed food and some of his favorite toys and some safe chews. When we come back home, we take those ”alone things” and collect them to certain box. And again when i take them out, he know he is goin to be left alone. He now understands that being alone doesn’t mean that every nice thing goes away. Alone time is something to look forward now. He spends about an half hour eating the kong ja playing and then goes to sleep. He spends around 5 hours alone workdays🙂 sometimes we have little relapses after holidays and so on but this method changed our lives. Before He used to cry and bark a solid hour after we left to work. I think separation anxiety is something that my dog will always have at some level, but nowday we live with it happily.
This sounds like such a smart hack! We just got our puppy 2 days ago and he HATES to be left alone, even for a second. I really hope we can break this barking habit soon. Especially for our neighbors sake 😩
Same ! The combination of tiring them out before they are left alone (even if that means waking up early and spending quite a lot of time) together with a favorite toy they only get when we are away (for us also the stuffed Kong of which we keep a few in the freezer) is really a good way to deal with it. Though I also think that means (in our case) that it is not really separation anxiety, just simply boredom that we had mislabeled as separation anxiety. After all, when exercised and entertained they are fine. I wonder how often people make that mistake and never address the actual problem.
I think I'm having same problem for last 3 weeks with my pup who just turned 11 weeks today and he is so bad I've tried so many things and nothing seem to work

I love this series. Showing us with a real untrained dog is very informative. We have a boxer who’s turning 3 next month and she’s a good girl but we have a few issues: pulling while we walk her, and getting way too excited and jumping on ppl when they try petting her or when we have guests in our home, which is super annoying

So basically exercise, give puzzle treats, and wait for the dog to relax before leaving or eating something yummy when you leave.

Because of my 3 roommates, tackling separation anxiety/barking when I leave was the first problem I had to tackle. Amazing how far dogs can come with enough time and patience.

I feel I learn a lot just from watching your problem solving process and how you deal with when dogs don't do exactly what you hoped for. Many other dog training videos out there show trainers working with dogs that already know what to do, but it's so much more educational and helpful to see what it's like to train a dog that doesn't yet know what to do. My border collie mix started maturing mentally the past few months and it has changed a lot. Because she learns things super quick it didn’t take long for her to get over her separation problems. She actually hasn’t had any anxiety since she was 6 months. She has actually been an amazing service dog in training and she should be ready for college this fall. I can tell that inertia has matured quite a bit and will be a good dog.

Thank you. Im moving in a month to an apartment with mY 5 Yr old Dorkie. We have been living on a 20 acre property with my sons dog. Now , temporarily at my parents hose and the separation anxiety he is experiencing is aweful. I need him to calm down becore we move into an apartment and my neighbors are disturbed by him everytime I have to leave the apartment. So thank you, we will be working on his separation anxiety issues while we are still at my parents house and not disturbing the neighbors.

Yay for keeping baby Inertia tugging at your pants! I just love to see that even a dog trainer can struggle but it's how you work through the issue that matters... aka with patience and lots of love.

When I first got my Aussie at 10 mo of age, he used to bark like crazy when I crated him to go to work, now I say "guess what time is, guess what time IT is?" (like the Weds hump day camel geico ad) and my aussie and dobie run to the gate to their room and he goes right in his crate(dobie is older and doesn't need to be in crate any more) and I give them their Kongs which 12 hrs earlier I had filled 1/2 way with kibble then with plain low-fat yogurt(which seeps down into the kibble) and maybe a carrot or a piece of chicken or a treat, topped off with a tad more yogurt and stuck it in the freezer so it frozen solid, that gives him something to do for much much longer and I think makes him tired for having to think so hard. He's always sleeping when I get home and does not start barking when he sees me. I think the distraction of the frozen Kong really helped him.
Thats greaat. This is coz you showed patience and consistency. A lot of dog owners just don't have it.

Watching you handle Inertia with her anxiety in real time was so enlightening to me. A lot of videos I've been hoping to learn from already have trained dogs showing off crate skills which doesn't help me relate too well. Having her be in process is honestly relieving with the anxiety I'm getting with my puppy right now. He cries a lot when we leave and, while luckily my husband works from home and can usually watch our baby, sometimes we both need to go. Imitating your process has given me the steps I needed to guide me in this so I can guide my pup through his own issues. Thank you so much for your hard work and it's so clear how much you love your dogs.
"A lot of videos I've been hoping to learn from already have trained dog" - exactly this. Ran into quite a few of those video's, showing a dog who already knows it... They basically skipped the first few difficult sessions where you actually teach the dog, and show how easy it is after the dog is trained - which doesn't help at all (except making you feel bad because you are failing). Say what you want, but Zak does show his 'failures' (or rather situations which don't go as planned, or unexpected situations) and that is so helpful in teaching your own dog (knowing what can go wrong, and how to react).

Hi Zak, it’s so comforting to see that even a professional dog trainer like yourself may still have to deal with separation anxiety in a pup. Our rescue hound Roxy had very severe separation anxiety that persisted seemingly no matter what we tried. It was a long journey but she’s finally making some incredible progress and we’re so proud of her. I love your videos!
What worked for you? I have a dog that I took as a rehome and she also has pretty severe separation anxiety.

Hey Zak! My fiancé and I have learned a ton from your youtube videos. We have a 9 month old black lab/plott hound mix. She has mild separation anxiety and exhibits similar behaviors to Inertia. We have found success using high reward treats (bully sticks and chicken filled kongs), running her and having her eat before we leave, an Adaptil calming collar, and music. We looked into separation anxiety and decided to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the problem. So far, it seems to be working quite well but progress is very hit or miss. Thank you for your helpful videos!

@@LittlePawsTraining i just bought it this morning, switching between audiobook and the kindle version. I'm currently just at the beginning (checklist of what to buy before getting a puppy). I took a lot of notes already for tomorrow because I'm going to meet a breeder :-) so it helped me already within the first 3 chapters. I'm positive that it will help me a lot with the training too. (I got the "Zac George's Dog Training Revolution", not "Guide to a well behaved dog". Maybe I'll get it later, but I feel like the one I have now pkus the videos might be enough)

It's Kind of funny, because in training my puppy its like I'm also conditioning myself to be just like you. Like I'll say things like "Good job, I'll reward that". LOL. The other day I literally absent mindedly clicked the clicker at my husband and said good job when he was working on the computer. He looked at me like I was crazy- felt a little crazy myself, but what you gonna do. Ha Ha. I'm a walking positive affirmation regurgitating robot that clicks. But your stuff is great and really helping us with our pup. She's a poodle Aussie shepherd mix. So far we can can sit, lay, shake hands, run fetch and bring ball back, kiss, stay on command and then come. All thanks to you sir. Wish I could upload a pic of her. I get my new pup (french bulldog) in 3 weeks. I have always only adopted senior bulldogs so a puppy is the first for me and my family. I have been watching all Zak's videos and cant wait to apply them to my future training sessions!

I've just become a dog trainer by necessity...a new puppy with a 2.5 yr old female dog and a tiny 5 yr old female dog. What a trip!
I'm a cat person so I'm in another universe. Anyway, just wanted to mention...when rewarding the exicted high voice is great but when he does something like lunging .chasing cat..too wild...my voice changed completely. Low voice tone..deep and stern...plus the " look"...I stare at him like an Army drill sargent. It works!!

OH MY GOSH I was just telling my husband how I need a video from you about separation anxiety and barking! Our 8 month old Aussie learns quickly but we struggle with her constantly vocalizing! Even if we just walk to the other room! She knows "speak" and we have been working on "quiet" or "shhh" in tandem, but she doesn't seem to understand the command when we aren't in "training mode." Thanks for all your tips and advice in this video, we will be trying all of it for sure!

Had a similar issue with our cattle dog. I installed a nanny cam with two communication since she was left alone for about 4 hours, to help understand the issue. Used a kong and lots of toys and treats but mildly work. Left the radio on one morning by accident and what a chance it work wonders. There is no cookie cutter way but dont forget to try new things and stay consistent.
I kept 2 from a litter and they both inherited the moms anxiety... It's a real challenge! They're SO well behaved otherwise thankfully. They're 8 mths this week so I love that we're working at the same stuff at the same time

I am so thankful for what your sharing. My pup Milo is 11 months old. We were doing great, until he realized the world is bigger. We often walk through our town. After a few fun dog play dates he started barking on our walks. 🤦🏻♀️ Mainly because he wants to go and play w All dogs. His sister Melody will be two soon and she is ahead of him with her maturity. I am having trouble walking them together, so now they have to be walked separately.

One thing I really like to use for separation anxiety and quiet training is a treat robot. There's a remote control one called the Treat & Train and one that actually automatically trains your dog for quiet by listening for barks from a collar and rewarding quiet called the AutoTrainer. Both are great, positive only, although the Treat & Train is quite loud and needs to be introduced from a distance first for dogs who can be sensitive to loud noise. What's nice is that you can dispense treats from right outside the door or just out of sight, so the dog doesn't need to wait for you to return to get rewarded for being quiet right after you get out if sight, which can be frustrating to teach otherwise because there's such a big timing gap between shutting the door behind you and rewarding not barking.

😂😂😂 I am watching this video while working. Luna is sitting on the recliner behind me. When inertia started barking, she started barking. When you told her to quiet and settle down. Luna also stopped barking and layed down. 😂😂😂 thanks Zak.
So I got a boxer puppy when I was five and we’d bring him down to my kindergarten every now and then to show him of to my friends as a puppy. Now he loves everyone and is probably the most social dog I’ve ever seen.

Thanks for this. We have a new pup (3month shepard/cattle dog mix) who is Stage 5 clinger with me. He cannot stand being crated or outside in his run alone. I've been trying to get him to associate the crate with treats and special chew bones and dragging it all around the house to areas I need to work in so that he has a line of sight to me. It does seem to be helping and he would even go into while the door was open on his own and lay down for a very short time while I was in the kitchen with him. I will look into trying the kong.

FanGirl Edits as soon as they finish the Kong they'll start barking again (notice he didn't show what happened when Inertia finished). It's a temporary distraction. Recommend to check out Kikopup and Dog Liaison for help with your pup, good luck!
@@jilliebeen1 I appreciate your response but I've always watched zak's videos when it's came to dog Training my dogs and they never fail to work, Yes I get zak didn't film when inertia finished but maybe because their was nothing to film, Again I'll stick with zak's videos when it comes to training my dogs because I find it easier then watching loads of different videos but thank you for trying to help

My 8 month old puppy Hudson (chihuahua/spaniel mix) is dealing with isolation distress. He gets plenty of exercise and 2 long walks a day. Hudson is fine to be in his crate, wait patiently, or play with his toys in another part of the home while we’re in the another room.
Initially thought he had separation anxiety, but as we reinforced crate training and rewarding for being quiet when left the room, we discovered his issue is only when we leave home.
We approach leaving our house the same way we approached crate training and keeping him in other rooms (we call them “In and Outs”). Started with short periods of time, rewards when he was calm, extended to longer periods of time the more comfortable he got. When doing In and Out‘s, we can build up his time to hours in his crate or 20 minutes waiting outside the house (it’s a cold winter in Canada, can’t stay out there long).
The problem comes when we leave the house and Hudson realizes this no longer is a training exercise, he howls excessively until our return. He refuses to relax in his crate or take a nap. He once howled for 3 hours straight when we needed to go out. How am I suppose to reward a calm puppy for my return if he’s never calm and doesn’t stop howling? We need to eventually re-enter our home, but because he’s howling that means Hudson wins.
We can’t do “In and Out” build ups everytime we need to go out to the gym, dinner, grocery shopping, etc.
Please help!!
