British intelligence fears Germany may be close to a weapon that could win them World War II. As German scientists cultivate a fledgling nuclear weapons program at a heavy water plant in Telemark, Norway, the British devise a plan to infiltrate and sabotage the heavily-guarded plant. This is the story of the special operation forces who led those missions-the men of Operation Grouse, Operation Freshman, and Operation Gunnerside.

I know quality content creators need to make income to support their efforts, but just be careful about how you do this. Too long of advertisements at the start of a video have an adverse effect on viewership and reach, not to mention subscriber retention. This one isn't too bad, just trying to add this gentle reminder to bring this to your attention because I really like this channel.
Personally, I believe Astrum handles this well. He just mentions who is sponsoring his videos at the beginning, but then will a short advert at the very end, and usually not do a comment advert, though does write about his Patreon every once in a while. The less intrusive the ads, the better.
It’s just so hard to imagine how unfathomably BADASS these men were.
Back in the days of no complex electronics or satellite guiding, or drones, or anything like that, they braved the wilderness into a Nazi secret weapons plant.
Fuck man. “If the soldiers walked out of the barracks, the commandos would go down shooting.” BAD. ASS.
You have the wrong idea. Hearing them talk from when I was a kid, they were just regular people doing a job that needed to be done
They are you. They had the privilege and honor to live in terrible times, and for that they'll be remembered.
@@L_Train that’s a good way of looking at it. Who was in your life that told these stories? And what did they do?
@@timbeaver9790 that particular generation definitely went through some shit.
like the SAS
I know it's a tiny detail, but I've read this story before and the Norwegians that took the man hostage made sure he was safe from the blast, and also took an extra 2 minutes to help him find his glasses because he lost them lol. Norway is so underrated when it comes to their military. You guys are legends
True!
@@HistoryDose thanks for your reply! You're like a celeb to me lol, can't wait for your growth bud!
Thx for the positive comments. Alot of people say the Norwegians were useless in ww2.
This channel has the most immersive and well made history videos out there. Focusing on the less known but equally as interesting topics and eras really is something more channels should be doing. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Joe (my brother and the artist/editor) and I put a ton of work into making each one immersive with music, color pallet, narration, etc., so this is great to hear
@@HistoryDose really appreciate the work you and Joe put into these.
@@HistoryDose and it shows! Thank you all for creating and sharing these amazing videos.
@@HistoryDose it’s absolutely incredible I will continue to recommend your channel as much as I can!!!
Much appreciated!
My grandfather served in the RAF and he told me about this as a boy, I revered and respected him.
I lost my father recently and he bequeathed me my grandfather and great grandfathers war medals.
Thank you for this.
You can all thank me for destroying the nazis heavywater. Took me an hour to clear out all the enemy positions in Battlefield
thank you
A true honor to have a decorated Norwegian war hero, Mr. SpaceMonkeyBoi, here for the premiere
Thank you for your service in Battlefield.
do you think you're cute or something? not funny. not creative. not original. Disrespectful.
You must be a pure bred sled dog then
You're literally the only channel to me that makes very well made history stories very immersive with epic art style and epicnes.
Like to me your literally telling a legendary tale, but its all actual history, love this channel keep it up! :)
Epic
This literally has the hallmarks of a great movie, i'm surprised no one's gone to the effort and made one (as far as I know)
This is exactly what I was thinking the whole time.
There is a Norwegian show about it called The Heavy Water War
The Heroes of Telemark is loosely based on this story.
@@Magim1001 THANK YOU FOR THIS RECOMMENDATION, in canada; external media like this is NEVER advertised
Your narrative style and the images you show are a huge reason why I love your channel and your storytelling! Fantastic work and I cannot wait for the next one.
Thank you very much, Johnny
Having a cabin where they landed, and driving past Vemork is a regular occurrence, I'll say the landscape is pretty extra ordinary. Even for Norwegian standards. The description was well articulated. +1
Love hearing about missions like this. Things that ALTER direction of history if successful. Also loved that the fireteam stayed in the redzone for months hoping someone comes to find them! super cool.
I remember reading about this from a display sign on my Route 66 trip. An elderly Norwegian man named Christian Christiansen (really) moved to Gardner, Illinois and found out about the plant by a newspaper. He used his boyhood recollections to help the Allies find their way to the plant. At least that’s what the sign claimed, the town might have been trying to drum up interest in the area.
Thank you for sharing this. I had to google this Norwegian and I can confirm you that this guy had nothing to do with bombing off this factory. Regards
@@mortensuperlite as far as google is concerned anyway
It's really cool that you're talking about subjects that are not really talked about when it comes to WW2 but are really super interesting. I'm really glad I found your channel
This was incredible. The narration, the music, the drawings. Very well done and I look forward to future documentaries.
One thing I wish was added was the names of the troops that were part of this mission. Their names should be honored more.
one of my favourite stories of the war, glad you covered it
There’s an excellent book on Grouse/Freshman/Gunnerside by Damien Lewis. I picked it up after watching The Heroes of Telemark and can confirm that it’s a must read for anybody with an interest in WW2 history.
I love how often you use alliterations. Super pleasing to listen to.
This Heroic tale is probadly the most widely known tale from Norways occupation in ww2. Here in Norway we call it "Tungtvannsaksjonen" (crudely translated "heavywater action"
This channel is an experience, you get so immersed, truly amazing.
I can’t wait for whatever is next, fantastic work by you two (not sure if you’re two or three actually)
Btw whatever happened to the worker that was held at gunpoint?
Just two people. Ronneberg let him and another captive go, and told them to get to a balcony so that they wouldn’t be harmed by the explosion, which they did. I’m unsure of what became of them afterward, though.
They also had a 2 or 3 minute delay in their plan because they literally helped the man (he was older) find his glasses because he lost them lol
I've come back to this video for the third time. This story is too intense. Thank you so much
Glad you liked it! It’s a short one, but it was a lot of fun to make
Every video put out by this channel is a masterpiece.
Great to see, that the colour palette is consistent in all your videos, it's not all over the place, as in some other youtubers' case.
If you end up doing a video on Hungary's history, we'd be glad to help! :)
Cheers
- The Hungarian Civil Guard
Such intricate detail in the writing and paint work of these videos is as unique as I’ve ever seen on CZcams
Dude... does this guy have behind the scenes editing.... beautiful and masterful
Could you do a video on Moe Burg? He was a baseball player turned OSS spy, and played a crucial role in uncovering the germans progress regarding the atom bomb.
Please please PLEASE do a video on Belisarius!!! I loved the one on Stilicho and I feel he is also a character with a rich history! Love the vids
This felt like a very intense sniper elite mission, badass
I forgot to leave a comment yesterday when I watched, amazing video as always! You find some amazing stories to cover that are not well known. Thanks again for the hard work!!
Thank you Strat!
Fantastic content as usual. You guys are quality, the cinematic approach and the narration are beyond perfect. And amidst all of it, we end up learning something new as well. Thank you 🙏
I'm beginning to love your channel! Great work from you both. Your voice and the style of presentation is really good.
Thanks for all the work!
these videos are awesome man keep it up
like seriously i've watched the crazy joe one like 10 times
Haha that is awesome. Crazy Joe was a lot of fun to make. I’d love to return to the Mafia genre
@@HistoryDose YES! Would love to see that!
Holy...this story is so incredible, it sounds like a stealth mission straight out of a video game.
There’s a mission similar in battlefield
You and the team my favourite youtube channel hands down. I wish there was more videos since i binge watched all of them! Keep up the amazing work brother!!!
No one paints pictures of history better than this channel. It's so emersive
this would make a banger of a movie
Incredible Narration, Artwork and script. I love this channel more with every upload
You had me immersed man something I very rarely ever experience on YT, videos are top tire!! Got my sub hell I should be able to give you 10 with this kind of content!!
How have I not seen this yet? I am a huge fan of the channel and this is the most legendary story from where I live. There are way more to this story that makes it even more badass.
This was unbelievable! I had no idea this happened. If this story was a live action movie then i would think it was too unrealistic. Love how some of your videos seem to alter the artstyle a little as needed for the vibe. I haven't gotten to your newer vids yet, but i think this is your best video that's under 10 minutes I've seen so far.
Always enjoyed this story, and you did a wonderful job telling it 👍
Really enjoyed this one. The one on the gallowglasses recently was brilliant too. I'd love to see more stuff on Irish history, it has largely been ignored
Just subscribed, great video all around! Thumbnail wasn't a lie (I always dislike videos and click off on videos like that) and the content was intense, immersive and very well narrated.
Great video!! Loved it it was so informative
Your videos are the best history videos I ever saw! I can't wait for the next video!
This was awesome man good job ❤️
This channel is amazing,....the narration makes everything so intense,....i hope you maintain the format and don't switch to voice actors like some youtubers,....subscribed.
Can't enough of your channel and content. It's hands-down the best history focused channel I've found on youtube. Love the fantastic artwork as well - makes for a very immersive and rich experience. You and your brother are hyper-talented! Only complaint is there's not like a hundred more of these videos to watch, haha! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks!! Haha we’re going to be much more consistent with uploads this year
Watching your new video on Boudica makes me want to fund your travels with your brother to get more incredible, forgotten historical content.
Your brother's art along with your narration are absolutely speculatar.
I'm on a rewatching marathon of all your almost unbelievable content. Thank you so much guys!
P.S. Thank you for covering my country in your prior video, I'm always so excited every time you and your brother post one of your stunning videos.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you’re enjoying the rewatch!
Another great video.
Thank you and keep up with the great work.
👍👍👍👍👍
The quality of these videos is just so impressive !
Excellent video as always
This was phenomenal. The artwork is truly beautiful.
Amazing documentary, incredible narration and awesome animation
Greetings from Norway:)
This is probably the inspiration for quite a few movies. I have had some crazy adventures...but this is next level.
These videos are SOOOOOO SICK... I only wish they were longer!!
Every story is about fascinating history and i LOVE the excellent artwork and narration.. definitly one of my top favorite channels on all of youtube..
Wow what a story..the courage and ingenuity and daring of those young men....to accomplish such a task and make it away is absolutely amazing.. my grandfather fought for canada in PP light jnfantry.. fought mostly in italy and france.. he was 17 when he went to war. Those were some brave men back then.. i salute them.
Absolutely top notch video.🙏💪💪💪 Thanyou very much!
Never knew about any of these operations. Your channel rocks
This video is unreal! How is this story not more well known. Like a movie or something
This is by far one of my favorite episodes you've done, glad it showed up can't remember if I watched it but now I can't forget it
Thanks! This one never took off views-wise, but I’m glad you liked it!
The production is incredible! This is quality storytelling.
Subbed!
Amazing video, amazing editing, amazing narrator, everything is amazing and under 50k views absolutely sickening
Thanks! No idea why this one has fallen on its face, but it’s certainly not a good sign.
@@HistoryDose This video was fascinating and beautifully done. However, I just watched it today because my CZcams feed has been filled with the Depp/Heard trial instead of actual channels that I'm subscribed to. Maybe that's what happened? Hopefully the viewership will pick up now.
By the way, I never did well in history in school. Every time I watch one of your videos, I learn something new. Thank you for that!
Amazing video guys 👍🏼
Hey just got recommend your channel thankfully. You have a instant sub.
just like every other episode, the art is on a league of its own, absolutely stunning
Amazing video loved it. It would be great if you guys could also make a video on the European Conquest if the Caribbean
Incredible content - the artwork brings such a creative sense of story to history. I’d love to see another World War II video!
These videos are very good, beautiful paintings and narration 👍
Me and the boys called it on that community post, had to be Gunnerside 😎
You guys are insanely good at guessing from vague images
Great videos they always leave you wanting more 👌👏
I can't get enough of your channel.
Of the videos you made, this one is my favourite! Please consider covering more ww2 missions in future!
Happy to hear you liked it! This one never hit the algorithm, but I’d love to cover more WWII in the future
Your story telling is so good 😁
This channel is absolutely insane big commitment
Great video guys!
Ray Mears' book on this - The Real Heroes of Telemark is a fantastically detailed account of this extraordinary raid
It's only a short video so a lot has been missed out:
The Germans didn't guard the ravine because an ascent assault was thought impossible.
The charges were set with a timer thought too short for the team to escape, to ensure the charges weren't found and disarmed before they went off. The team escaped anyway.
One of the members took shelter in a hotel - which was raided at random by Germans due a rebuff of a general by a Norwegian waitress. The man jumped off a lorry and escaped, dodging bullets and grenades, eventually outpacing the chasing Germans and out smarting (killing) the last and only German who could keep up.
The entire story is astonishing.
Amazing as usual!
Excellent video love the channel
Another great video!
amazing story and great art as always
I watch every video you guys put out you are awesome :)
Great video. I love this channel.
Excellent Content.
I love this channel! The attention to detail both in the storytelling and artwork os immersive and captivating. You guys do incredible work. Keep it up!
Thanks! This video never took off but I liked the way it came out!
Nice to see modern history content now and then
Although the mission was successful against overwhelming odds, in fact it was probably not necessary. Germany was not heavily involved in atomic bomb research. Hitler was wary of the subject, and considered it Jewish science. The heavy water actually destroyed by the Allies was done by a time bomb inside the ship carrying the heavy water.
Of course, the Allies didn't know about how little research was going on in Germany, and had to assume the worst. So this mission was daring, thought to be absolutely necessary and was successful, and your video captured all of that. Keep up the good work. It's refreshing to have a channel that actually does research and works on the videos diligently.
Another great video
Loved this one!
Love to hear something about Brian Boru the high king of Ireland who fought the Vikings
The narration, animation and artistry of these videos are amazing
Thanks Paul!
It is frankly absurd that this episode has less than 100k views. So, so good
amazingly told....
More ww2 videos please. Love the content
Y'all make amazing videos. Your sound and visuals are top notch man
What really gets me is how young they were, soldiers as young as 18, the leader of an elite squad only 23. Young men like that are hard to come by these days
They were just as rare back then, until forced to adapt.
Love this channel
Yo the soundtrack for this video is phenomenal, like it gets my adrenaline pumping right away.
you guys have become one of my favourite CZcams channels
Great work guys!
Thanks Santiago!
I would love to see a video on the Boer Wars !
Incredible video
Amazing video
