The 1956 D-500 was a high-performance model derived from the standard 1956 Dodge but differing in many ways. It included a heavy duty suspension and other chassis upgrades from the New Yorker and Imperial lines, upgraded brakes, and a high-performance 315 in³ (5.2 L) Hemi-head V8. A four-barrel Carter carburetor pushed output to 260 hp (194 kW) and 330 lb·ft (447 N·m). The 3-speed manual transmission was standard, with the PowerFlite 2-speed automatic as an option. A rare NASCAR-specific option was the D-550-1, which upped power to 285 hp (213 kW). The D-500 originally used only the Coronet 2-door sedan and Royal Lancer hardtop and convertible bodies.

My Grandfather ordered a 56 Custom Royal Lancer D500. My Dad bought it from him in 59. Dad drove it but also drag raced it. He has passed now, but he told me many stories about that car. He said the only car in the area that could hang with it around Johnson City, TN was a guy who had a 57 Golden Commando Plymouth Fury. That is until he put a different cam and intake on it. He use to outrun TN Highway Patrol and others hauling beverages to certain places.

The 1955-56 Chrysler 300 and 1956 Dodge Custom Royal D-500-1 are my absolute favorite cars of the 1950's. Those two Mopars totally dominated the 1955-56 NASCAR seasons. The 55 Chrysler 300 was the very first American muscle car...the first regular production car with 300 horsepower. The 56 300 was even more of a beast than the 55 had been and also in 1956 the other 3 Mopar divisions(besides Imperial)released their own high performance models...the DeSoto Adventurer, Dodge D-500, and Plymouth Fury. But in 1957 Ford and GM made some cars that were capable of beating the Mopar's...the supercharged Ford's, the fuel injected 283 Chevy's, and the Tri-Power Pontiac's and Oldsmobile's. I believe 1957 was the last year of the Dodge and DeSoto Hemi's and 1958 was the last year of the Chrysler 392 Hemi. After 1958 Mopar switched to strictly wedge head V8 engines until the 426 Hemi made it's debut at the 1964 Daytona 500

Beautiful automobile! The wheels look like the same Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels (not covers, but real wire wheels!) that were used on Chrysler 300s. Outstanding color combo, everything is perfectly coordinated inside and out. :)

There are a lot of folks out there who would have preferred to have the 315 engine with 2 Carter WCFB carburetors, and the 3 speed manual transmission, and that car would have just walked away from this light duty toned-downed version of a Super Red Ram. And that Powerflite transmission was a real drag, the very next year Torqueflite put an end to that miserable imitation of a Chevrolet Powerglide.

I don't think that was the original hemi. I recall the head cover painted red with the words, "Red Ram V8" on it. It looks like a later engine. I had a 56 Chrysler New Yorker with a hemi and the spark plugs went straight into the cylinders. There wasn't trim plate across the holes. I gave that thing many a tune up. And the power houses usually had ram induction as well.

The 1955 Chrysler 300 and Dodge D500 were the original muscle cars. I believe they were the first American car to have a 300 horsepower factory rating. I know Duesenberg had a 320 horsepower supercharged engine back in the late 20s or early 30s, but I wouldn't really consider a Duesenberg a muscle car. They we're an EXTREMELY expensive car and only the very wealthy could afford them.

Original muscle-cars? Chrysler and Dodge? hahahahahahah Ever hear of a 1949 Oldsmobile 303 cubic inch V8 with a 4 speed Hydramatic.? Nothing stock could touch that Oldsmobile. And that is the definition of muscle-car ! Period.
