  • The Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers (DDGs) is a United States Navy class of destroyer built around the Aegis Combat System and the AN/SPY radar. The class is named for Admiral Arleigh Burke, an American destroyer officer in World War II, and later Chief of Naval Operations. The lead ship, USS Arleigh Burke, was commissioned during Admiral Burke's lifetime.
    These warships were designed as multimission destroyers, able to fulfill the strategic land strike role with Tomahawk missiles; antiaircraft warfare role with powerful Aegis radar and surface-to-air missiles; antisubmarine warfare with towed sonar array, anti-submarine rockets, and ASW helicopter; and antisurface warfare with Harpoon missile launcher.

      @D B Troll someone else I block blatant trolls. I can also like my own comment.
      The Type 45 has a great range(but it's much smaller) and that is about it when compared to the AB class. The AB class is over 2 million pounds(1,000 long tonnes) heavier. The type 45 is mainly an anti-air destroyer and the AB class does that better as it has ballistic missile defense, longer range missiles, and carries much more missiles, to the point where in ESSMs alone, the AB class destroyers more ESSMs alone then the entire type 45 VLS as they are quad packed. The issue even the non-biased UK commenters would admit is the VLS is too small, lack of quad packing, and the lack of anti-ship missiles is big(by 2023 they are removing the harpoons that they are just installing now) The AB class also has more power so it could possibly bring aboard weaker lasers in the 50kw class like on the USS Ponce.

    The Title doesn’t say unsinkable. It says can’t be killed. That can refer to the model line. More ships are ‘killed’ by a bureaucrat’s pen than an enemy’s weapons. The class is still going despite efforts to replace it. So it hasn’t been killed. If there is a serious shooting war lots of ships will sink and lots of lives will be lost. That hasn’t changed in thousands of years.

    A single brahmos missile would take that boat out of the fight. Two would likely sink the vessel. Hypersonic missiles are real and they travel really fast. This boat may be able to defend itself from subsonic weapons like the harpoon and exocet, but it cannot react quickly enough at a fast moving hypersonic missiles/glide vehicle. The other issue is the kinetic energy transfer from a weapon traveling at hypersonic speeds. The hull of this boat was never designed to withstand such extreme kinetic forces from hypersonic missiles. Hey DARPA can you guys like hurry up both china and Russia both have deployed this system we need like 2 to 4 hundred like last month to stay competitive here.

    These ships have made improvements from the first hulls. The earliest numbers of these ships were pieces of shit, but such things can be said about any of the earlier ships of any class. I spent six of my 22 years on Arleigh Burkes and 6 other years on Ticos. I much preferred the Ticos. The Burkes are cheap and anyone who has participated in any form of maintenance of these ships will know this. Flights I and II had ship wide grounding and magnetic problems. You could walk from one end of the ship to the other and get a static discharge every 20 feet. Even sitting in home port for months, one can witness the magnetic field of the ship drift substantially. It seemed the deguassing system really had to work hard nearly always. This is bad. Shaft seals, line bearings, bulkhead attachments were all made of cheaper metal subject to electrolysis corrosion. Many these ships burst shaft seals because of this. The exterior ready service lockers, the crew served weapons bases, life rail attachment points all had cheap fasteners rather than corrosion resistant fasteners. Smart technicians eventually figured the stock part number for these was bad and ordered CRES appropriate fasteners even though the command didn't want to afford something that would pay itself off in the long run. While there were many innovative ideas such as modular deck attachments, most of those had such bad weld jobs they couldn't be used or required substantial rework to fix them. They rusted excessively due to poor welding or mismatched metals or were flat out misaligned/installed incorrectly. For example, the ammo elevators rarely worked. One was because the rails upon which the skipbox rode were visibly not parallel, yet the officers wondered why the box would get stuck when traversing. When I took over as an LCPO aboard one of the Burkes, I discovered saltwater activated munitions were being stored in a room designed to be flooded by seawater. When I looked into this problem, it was a common problem across several Arleigh Burkes. The Ticos had more redundant systems lending to their reliability. Burkes got rid of this to save on cost. While in many cases these ships are considered awesome, from a maintenance point of view, I hated the Arleigh Burkes, especially since I am able to compare them to the Ticos.

    As powerful as these ships are, they do not carry nearly enough defensive ammunition to sustain themselves against a modern Chinese missile attack. That's what the Germans thought in WW2.

    • @ATRTAP
      @ATRTAP Před 2 lety

      They don’t have to be invincible they just have to be enough because the United States possesses multi level fighting skills. The ships are being guarded by heavily armed offensive and defensive Navy aircraft. Satellite tracking any in bound hostilities. Not to mention an escalating global situation like this is going to attract our allies who are also going to show up with all their fancy toys. I would say the Chinese would definitely be in a fight for their lives. And even If they somehow survive their economy/ done- so fucking done.

    • @OutnBacker
      @OutnBacker Před 2 lety +1

      @@ATRTAP That very thinking is hubris. There are no qualified military experts who have been quoted as saying anything like that anymore. Rather, the least controversial comments have been that the US Navy needs to up its game. The most dire comments have been that the US Navy will be defeated in detail in the South China Sea. In Deatil.
      That means that China now has the anti-satelite capabilities to over come the US capabilities. Their missile guidance radar is now superior to ours, and they have the world's best anti-ship missile launched from a plane. Longer range, and higher avoidance. Their ships carry much more ordnace than ours, and have a very short re=supply line. The scenario is likely to see the US Navy delpeting their stores in the first 1-3 days of fighting, with our carrier groups heavily damaged or sunk. The Arleigh Burkes willbe prime targets that will be overwhelmed. They simply don't have enough defensive armament and there are not enough of them. The SpecOps froces fo all of SEATO would not be enough t dent that kind of defense. They's get a few, but would be sacrificed for nothing. And, that's assuming that they could even defeat CHinese opposition in trying to land.
      Look, I get it. It's hard to envision the US being defeated but this scenario would represent the first time since Korea that the US has faced a peer level military. The Chinese are not the same as 1979, when the PRC invaded VietNam wearing rubber farm boots.
      Likely, the Chinese will threaten S. Korea with letting the chain go on KimJung Un and with bombing Japan with ballistic missiles carrying convention warheads - for now. That would freeze the US from getting involved in the first place with Taiwan. We willl give up Taiwan, and it's strategic microchip industry, in order to save the two most productive economies in the pacific, second only to China. INtervening in Taiwan could see the destrxution and defeat of rhwe US Navy as well as terrible dmage to S. Korea and Japan. The result would be the loss of those US allies, and a Chinese ultimatum that those countries kick out the US. We would effectively be pushed back to Pearl Harbor and history will record that the US lost world dominace and the US dollar would no longer be the world standard of exchange. The rich would be getting on ther private jets and moving to Dubai ASAP. America would descend into a broken, state because our creditors would call the debt. Law and order would break down with pockets of martial law and no food. That
      's SHTF.
