Absolutely. Gundam may have coined the "real robo" genre but there are tons of anime with a more realistic take on the mechs. Armored Trooper VOTOMS is one of them.
The utter concentration/lack of audible thought for over a full minute and the way all of those battle themes suddenly crossfade into eachother do an excellent job at communicating Chirico's mental state in this scene
HOW MUCH YOU THINK IT COSTS TO MAKE MOBILE SUIT? AN ARMORED TROOPER UNIT IS LIKE MOBILE SUIT WITH COMBAT CAPABILITY USING ONLY 1 CREW MEMBER COMPARED TO 3 CREW MEMBERS TO GET A TANK TO MOVE AND SHOOT MAIN GUN:
An average mobile suit stands around 16-18 meters tall, while an AT on average is around 4 meters. So yeah, an AT is much cheaper but the size difference is huge
@@tezerethsize is a bad thing, bigger profile=more likely to get hit. similar to how tanks develop to have smaller silouhettes (less tall in most cases) also it is easier to conceal
What I love is how Chirico's maneuvers are complex and exciting, but they're not flashy or showy at all. It takes away the flair for concentrated action. Just out of curiosity, wasn't Kohta Hirano involved in this, along with Kunio Okinwara?
I don't think Gundam nowadays are realistic anymore, protagonist mechs being OP as fuck, plot armor overloads and characters randomly blurting out unnecessarily philosophical speeches during climatic battles. The only in-cockpit dialogues in VOTOMS ever are the inner monologues in Chirico's head.
Yeah, it's mostly non-UC Gundam that sucks. Most Gundam material within the "Universal Century" timeline is excellent, but pretty much anything outside that timeline is absolute shit.
DaSpineLessFish well, MS 08th team can be good sometimes, but ZZ and Unicorn are really shit. Just think about the ending of Unicorn: a Char Clone possessed by Char makes a huge MA with mystical powers, including time travel. Unicorn fights it and is hurled through the entire UC before winding up in the beginning of everything. Unicorn goes super sayan and absolutely wrecks Sinanju. Then Unicorn returns to the present and is sealed with Flex Tape.
@@user-xb1wh5mt4l Yeah that's how I feel, its retarded. 08th team was more annoying than anything. Every time another ass pull happens you just sit there going "Oh come on are the writers that lazy/stupid" Ironically 8th team and Unicorn are pretty good when the main character is not on screen and ruining it.
I know I'm quite late, but 9 years on we still seem to have the same problem: We can build a large robot, probably with enough strength to maneuver, and we can make robots and machines that can walk, even on treacherous ground. But our biggest problem remains power. We just can't seem to come up with a practical power source for these machines. Most of them need to be plugged in to powerful electrical lines. But we are figuring some things out. We've got dog-sized bots that can walk and navigate completely independent.
Because it's much more realistic. Beam technology was barely applied anywhere here. Most of the robots have bullet based weapons, so the tech resources weren't too big.
I love also the pre-GM MSG beam weapon usage: Either we have no beam weapon-equipped mechs at all or we have them on prototype/limited production or very large units.
If you think the Scopedogs look like Zakus, check out the Soltics from Dougram - it's almost shameless how similar they look. I love Dougram but they really should have made a different design for them.
At the present time there's still nobody who could figure out how to make the laser and the energy sources more compact without losing their power and punch. In Hard Sci-Fi terms, this means that any beam weaponry in the settings would require the weapon to be big and connected to a huge power generation device, like a starship engine.
agreed!!! In the 1st episode a scopedog fires a high powered energetic weapon but it is large and seems that the firing rate was low since it needs to regenerate.
Actually, there are a few. But they seem to be either too weak (I mean weaker than the guns the ATs are usually carrying) or too slow to charge (like the large energy cannon held by the light Scopedog in the first episode). Energy weapons are probably also too expensive to use for something as expendable as an AT. Long story short the technology for AT-use beam weapons is still in the refinement phase. Until then, guns and missiles are dominating the battlefield.
And they got that piece of technology from planet Quaint, the former homeworld of the fallen precursor civilization that ruled the Astragius Galaxy before the Balarant Union and Gilgamesh Federation even existed.
There was or is an english dubbed (voice over) version of this out there. I watched the entire series like that on comcast. If anyone finds it please reply.

Armored Trooper VOTOMS is one of them.
also better funk and city pop ost
This battle is just another tuesday afternoon for Chirico.
Fun Fact: The AT model that Chirico fights is called B-ATM-03 Fatty. Seriously.
Wish Wave would release 1/35 Fatty :/
On the other hand, Chirico has the ultimate plot armor. His plot armor is part of the plot!
Do note however that he goes through 39 different Armored Troopers over the course of 52 episodes.
Who said his ATs had plot armor?
The utter concentration/lack of audible thought for over a full minute and the way all of those battle themes suddenly crossfade into eachother do an excellent job at communicating Chirico's mental state in this scene
Now I understand why he goes "......" in the Super Robot Taisen all the time
Lmao
I suspect an AT unit would most likely be astronomically cheaper than any mobile suit to produce
AT is the equivalent of cccp's idea off mass quantity over quality.

Efreet Rob Schnieder
Even UC is dogshit half the time.
ZZ, 08th MS team and anything unicorn related sucks ass

I like war in the pocket. A zaku pilot taking out a gundam even of it was a rookie tester and a sad death.
I think we can build an actual live and functional Scopedog, but that will cost a crap load of money.

Zeon called. They want their Zakus back.
🤣🤣🤣

Both Zaku and Scopedog were designed by Okawara

That soundtrack tho
Kid: mom can we get gundam?
Mom: we have our own gundam at our home
Gundam at home:
This is better animated atleast.
Much better.
Way better
Never thought a space battle to porno music could be so thrilling!
agreed!!!

its so funny how all mecha anime use the exact same sound effects
These ATs look a lot like zakus
Guess kunio was going through a phase when working on Votoms
Probably a box Admit that a RGM-79 GM is a small part of Ideon.
Actually, there are a few.

oh nice... scopedog light mover module, which can be used in space terrains

None of the Votom series were dubbed
I'm pretty sure only one episode was dubbed
To be fair, there's more to Appleseed in the books than there are in the anime. So anime-wise, I agree, manga-wise, I don't.
But as I said, it's mostly based on their ships. Their robots only have guns... Well, most anyway.
MOST.
so this is more realistic than gundam?
la musica de esta escena es genial
What about Gundam 08th MS Team
My all time favourite Gundam series!
Does anyone know the song name that starts at 0:40? It would be a great help
Looking for the same thing! I got the 3 disc "complete" collection and it is NOT on there!
Universe End M-14
NOTE: I was wrong, it is track 4 on the first disc, heh...
THAT REUSED GUNDAM SOUND EFFECTS!
And DBZ.
Well, you will have to admit that Char's Counterattack uses SW stock sounds.
Love anime set to Funky 70s tunes. Anyone know what the song is?
What episode is that from?
why do the ships have lasers and not the scopedogs?
these are Zaku copies they even copied the sounds lol
gundam and votoms were made by the same people
