      It is in my opinion for use with sony e mount aps c cameras it's an excellent lense. Not an equivalent to the sony 90mm F2.8 macro. But, a very high quality lense for a 1/4 the cost of the sony.

    Perhaps the macro focusing ring is acting like a variable extension tube, or bellows.

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes it most certainly is. But all other macro lenses either let the lens extend in all situations, or keep internal focusing. A combination is very uncommon. But it works :)

    Great video Micael. Do you think this Meike lens is better value than the Oshiro 60mm f2.8 2:1 macro lens (if it is still available) for people wanting to spend less than $250? I think this is a copy of the Laowa 60mm f2.8 2:1 macro lens. The Oshiro lens was much cheaper than the Laowa lens about 2 years ago but it may not be available any more, at least not in the UK. Personally, I will probably wait for the Laowa 50mm 2:1 macro lens for micro 4/3 cameras that I gather may be released later this year.

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  Před 4 lety

      Sorry I cannot say as I have never used or even seen pictures of the Oshiro. As I understand it it was an illegal pirate copy of the Laowa 60mm built from cheaper parts.

    • @johnwest6141
      @johnwest6141 Před 4 lety

      @@MicaelWidell Thanks for your reply. About two years ago I read some speculation that Laowa had rebranded a modified version of their lens as Oshiro for a different market but Laowa denied that. If it was an illegal pirate copy it has probably been withdrawn.

    One more question--between this lens and the 7artisans 60mm F2.8 II V2.0 APS-C Format Macro, which one do you think is better for macro insect photography? I'm wondering if the 1.5x mag on this makes this lens better than the 7artisans and I would love your expert opinion to make my decision!

    Nice review! Looks like quite the good lens for the money. Although I think I rather save up for the Laowa instead, I currently already own an old 1:1 lens so I want to get even more magnification when upgrading.
    What is your experience regarding the time of the day when shooting insects? I feel like it's a bit easier in the evening, because the insects are generally less active then. Curious if you noticed any difference :)

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes the insects are calmer in the morning and evening so it is easier to photograph them. But you will find more insects in the middle of the day. I would say the best time here in sweden is late afternoon.

    • @spex357
      @spex357 Před 4 lety +1

      I find early mornings as most like a bit of sunshine before setting off, and also immediately after showers. On a bright sunny day if you notice a fly on a leaf in full sun, chances are another will replace it if you scare it getting in position. If we could look at it with a UV camera we could probably see why. The Laowa I own due to Michaels video and I can recommend it without any qualms. Best time for me is after a cup of tea.

    What do you think about the Tokina 100mm and Tamron 90mm macro lenses?
    They're both value for money options for those on a budget (both are 1:1 though).

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  Před 4 lety +1

      They are good options if you want autofocus. Still a bit more expensive than the Meike I think. And 1.5x is very helpful when you are shooting insects - not so much fun to shoot insects in 1x.

    • @viraj.shinde
      @viraj.shinde Před 4 lety

      @@MicaelWidell Agreed. The additional magnification is probably the main reason I'd prefer the Meike as well, apart from the price. Unfortunately, it's not easy to get one of those here in India. Tokina/Tamron are the only alternatives that we can get around that price range. :(

      @@MicaelWidell i wouldn't get the tokina for autofocus it is just too primitive and slow i know that because i own it and use it on a crop sensor camera and always just use manual focus instead
      IQ is good and colours are great
      the magnification is good enough on crop sensors
      the only negative on iq is a touch of chromatic aberration which can be easily removed in lightroom with just a click

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  Před 3 lety +1

      The Meike has 1.5x magnification and works with full frame, so if those are things you care about I recommend it. Also it has a slightly nicer rendering in general if you ask me. But the 7Artisans is cheaper.

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  Před 3 lety

      Well one reason would be the lower price, as you state they are never on sale and seldom sold used, so you have to pay at least double for a Laowa.
