Pontius Pilate got bad reputation. He really had no choice. Jesus of Nazareth, then on trial before the Roman military court, refused to acknowledge Divinity of Emperor Tiberius.. Thereby, effectively challenging the entirely of Roman state, as less then legal... infront of entire court of officers... if Pontius didn't crucify him after that, he would in effect, as far as Roman law is concerned, declare a rebellion against the God Emperor Tiberius... and that would result not only in his death as traitor, but anyone who didn't act immediately to arrest the procurator for treason against the state. Having said that, Pontus did repay the Temple, for putting him on the spot, in kind. Legio XV Apollinaris and Legio X Fretensis, there pulled from Syria into Judea, beginning a chain of events what would end in extermination of Judea, and expulsion of the Jews. So he got pay bk on the Temple, in the end.

It's not far off from the truth though. By resurrecting, regardless of you believe it ever happened or not, the mere idea was treason, and violence against supreme authority of the Roman law. Crucifixion was a very specific punishment, for most vile criminals against Roman Peace.. usually treason or rebellion.... so, the very idea, what anyone would then celebrate a man condemned to this particular execution, or even worse still, claim what that man then ressurected... was essentially an open rebellion against the state... and that, is violence against lawful authority. Essentially, to use modern definitions, terrorism.. from perspective of Roman law.

Pontius Pilate was just doing his job though, this wasn't a great analogy for the thinking kind. Most Christian's don't know that the Jews were a serious problem for Romans at the time, and Pilate was instructed to honor the religious customs to avoid further rioting. Something about Angels telling them they are supposed to act as respectful exiles never did sit well with Jews.
The sad part about this is that the real conspiracy theories belong to Christians. I was taught all this stuff, and the historical evidence shows that the persecution was not persistent as taught in church, there were definately bad places and times, but in general it was no better to be a Gaulic or Nubian Pagan; if you didn't serve the Roman faith, you were as fucked as a non-Paga- I mean Christian in America.
Christian's also act like the moment they combined with Paganism they didn't go around persecuting the entire goddamn motherfucking planet in an unprecedented manner. At least the Muslim's weren't going around collecting possessions, "relics" totally not Baal worship to collect things and wear a fish hat for ceremonial reasons, totally unrelated to the pagan influence fundamental to mainstream "Christianity". Let's all pretend this isn't where we get corruptions of Jesus' birth and passover.
Nero sure did Christian's in, but beyond that there's nothing that significant, and certainly nothing that even comes remotely close to going around the planet and burning everyone you didnt like, as well as experimenting on children who weren't your culture. Maybe Nero knew something we don't.

Today they'd just send a drone or dispatch feds to burn the entire congregation (men, women and children) alive in their church and get praise for doing so from their supporters.

There are people, myself included, who believe Malchus became a Christian after Jesus’ death and resurrection. For starters, the man had his ear put back on. That’s kind of convincing. Second, though, the Gospels were history books written for people who didn’t already know the story about the beginning of the Church. Because of this, the writers included significant names-notably, Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimathea, Simon of Cyrene, and Malchus (tradition also includes Longinus, the centurion who said “surely this was the son of God,” but that’s not relevant right now), all of whom were present at one point or another during the Passion. Some Church historians believe these names were included to designate people who became Christians because of the events that took place during Holy Week (well, except Nicodemus, but he was present before Holy Week, so it’s a little different). This is important because most of these names would not have been necessary to include for the story to have the same impact-after all, we don’t get the names of the false witnesses, the people who scourged Him, the two thieves crucified with Him, or even the names of all the pharisees or priests who accused Him in the first place. However, we are given the name of the High Priest’s nephew, the man who carried Jesus’ cross, and the man whose tomb He was buried in-seemingly trivial names. It would make sense if the writers of the Gospels included their names because they were converts relevant to the story.
Tl;dr: Some people think Malchus was a Christian because he is a named person in the Bible despite his relatively small role in the story.
