    Gary Player took his jacket home to South Africa after winning. The club contacted him about returning it and he reportedly said, if you want my jacket you can come to South Africa and get it. The 300 members does not include the honorary members of the club. When Hootie Johnson was Chairman of ANGC, the Head Coach of the Univ. of South Carolina football team was granted an honorary membership, which explains why Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier came to USC and their lackluster program. I actually know a member through friends of my fathers and I was told how much they pay per year, and it's nowhere near what people claim it to be. It's quite simple and clever on how much the members contributions to the club are yearly.

      Yes, Gary admits this during his interview after winning the 1978 masters (final round broadcast on CZcams at 1hr 35m 44sec). He said "I've gotta tell you about a coat. I've done something here that's really against the rules. This coat is never supposed to leave the premesis and when I first won my first masters in 1961, I was so thrilled I took this jacket back home and it's in my cupboard, and not even Mr Lane (chairman) is getting me to brink it back.

    Winners at the Masters are not automatically members. Only Palmer and a few others were invited to be members. Not sure Nicklaus is a member.

      100% true. Lotsa members are former well known amateur players(won't mention their last names) and VERY successful businessmen from Atlanta.

      I would assume Masters winners can come and go as they please. Knowing that none of them are even within driving range of the course, it’s probably not a frequent occurrence or a burden. Members probably love it too

      @stevebuchanan4829 Před rokem +2

      Yeah my point stands. You are invited to become a member. You cannot “apply.” And winners of the tournament do not become members unless invited and only few have been invited.

      When you’re invited to play Augusta, you’re a guest of a member and, as far as I know, you do not pay for ANYTHING at all. Everything you drink, eat, buy at the pro shop, etc goes to a bill that ends on that member’s bank account. When a pro wants to play there he (or she) has two options: call a member he knows to play with him or call the club, manifest his willing to play on a range of dates and the club will, on the majority of cases, be more than welcome to find a member who will have no problem to play a round of golf alongside a pro in exchange for a few golf tips here and there. Many businessmen and golfer friendships began like that either in Augusta or on other elite golf clubs like East Lake, Riviera or Congressional.

      There may be some extra member requirements that even winners can’t uphold since they are never there. It’s a mysterious process lol.

  • @insanity6105

    The winners are allowed to take the jacket with them for the first year after winning, but then return it and it stays at the club. Matsuama was famously photographed at the Atlanta airport the day after he won, with the green jacket draped over a chair next to his seat.
    The club’s total expenses for the year and totaled up and divided by 300, so each member pays his equal portion. If you have to ask how much the bill is, you can’t afford it.
    And winners are not members and probably never will be. Palmer and Nicklaus are the only two as far as I know.

    US Amateur Champ, Senior Amateur champ, and two-time Walker Cup member, William Hyndman III, told the story that early in his career he received a letter from Augusta inviting him to become a member. He wrote back saying he couldn't accept their invitation right then because he was trying to establish his insurance company and could they invite him again sometime in the future. They wrote back and said sorry but they only invite people once. Bill said it was the most regretted decision he ever made in his life.

    As I understand it, winning the Masters is not an invitation to become a member. Nick Faldo - 3 time winner! - is not a member. Outside of Masters week he can only play with a member. According to Google, only two players - Nicklaus and Palmer - have ever been given honorary membership, and that was due to their career status and prestige rather than any particular Masters win. Seve was the first winner I heard of who actually sneaked his green jacket out of Augusta National. It was hung in his trophy room when he was interviewed by Peter Allis shortly before his death.

      @mattwilliamsmusic5960 Sorry but it is. Augusta is lovely but doesn't have even half the history of the Old Course. The Old Course was established 472 years ago and in 1764 had a Course change which is why Golf has 18 holes. Its the home of golf. August was established 91 years ago and The Masters only became a major 64 years ago (and that was only because Palmer and a journo said it was 😁). There isn't really any comparison.
