Not like the Norwegians who watch really dull long form tv shows: It all started in 2009 with NRK’s 7 hour live broadcast of the train journey from Bergen to Oslo. Since then they’ve shown 18 hours of minute by minute salmon fishing, 13 hours of live knitting, and all 899 hymns in the hymnal sung live for over 60 hours. And then there was my personal favorite, the 12 hour broadcast of logs burning in a fire...

@@carmenl163 Simple. To us, our infrastructure isn't special. We just use it without even thinking about how much better it is than the infrastructure in places like the US and Canada. Because having great infrastructure isn't a reason for us to stop demanding improvement.
That´s true. Here in Mexico whenever we talk about infrastructure is just about how BAD it is and how there are many obvious solutions that just don't get implemented.

@@koganenosenshi1241 lol what?
Not super into the watching paint dry, but the exterior elevator system and the historical note about the hooks are really quite interesting.
Those elevators are super efficient, going straight from the apartment to the truck, you don't even have to carry things through the lobby, and one moving elevator can serve multiple buildings. It also alleviates one of the main reasons for an elevator in midrise buildings. Climbing a couple flights of stairs every day is probably more healthy than hassle, but moving a couch up the stairs sucks, and can result in injury and damage no matter how much you pivot.
Just one of many little things that can incrementally improve life that start to add up to a lot when everything is considered.
A great thing to do is always ask why something is a certain way. It allows you to find what is actually needed and what else doesn't make sense. Cut out what looks good at first glance but is totally unneeded if something like this external elevator can replace the need for supercapacity elevators or super wide stairwells in the building. And the wide windows don't just serve to put furniture through, they also give tons of natural lighting and a brilliant view of the outsie
I used to think "midrise buildings don't need a lift" until a wheelchair-using girl became one of my best friends. She rented an apartment that suited her needs, she could actually afford an apartment that suited her needs, so everything's great, right? Except, any time I wanted to have friends over for dinner, or my birthday party, or whatever - my building didn't have a lift.
Then, there was the time I broke a leg, and was suddenly not at all happy not to have a lift.
Young couples need a lift because how are you supposed to get a pram up the stairs?
Older people need a lift because eventually the stairs become a challenge.
Climbing a coule flights of stairs every day is indeed healthy. But the large number of exceptions do justify having a lift.
@@Galastel I agree having one is good, and new buildings should all have one. But it isn't worth tearing down old buildings to rebuild them with a lift. If an easy retrofit is possible, sure, do it, but having this makes some old buildings a lot easier to move in and out of.
And it is probably worth designing windows that can facilitate this even if there is a regular lift in the building as well. It isn't that big of a change to the window, and it makes so moving day doesn't interfere with normal usage, and you don't have to haul everything through the halls and lobbies, it just goes straight into your apartment.
I was about to add the accessibility point, but it seems that's already been brought up. It's always worth considering if something is friendly to disabled peoples.
@@TheReykjavik In the building I live in now we have an elevator, but the internal rules don't allow you to use it for moving (as it can damage the elevator and it's not all that big in the first place). of course, we have terraces with double doors that look out over the garages, so park the moving van there (no need to block the street, just warn your neighbours you might block their garage for a couple of hours), moving elevator against the terrace and you have a double door to move everything out off. Very easy.
I've also seen moving trucks some time ago on scissors, like the catering trucks at airports. They have a limit on how high they go and depending on your building they might not fit, but if you do, you can load directly from your apartment into the truck without needing any elevator.
The houses leaning forward because of the hooks pulling heavy weights is a cool detail
We have those moving elevators in Korea too.
That's interesting! I've never seen them in Korea before! Though for most of the trips I took to Korea, I was in Suwon and stuck in meetings with Samsung all day. 😬

Hey man, i wasn't surised you have a lot of dutch viewers, we love to see foreigners enjoy the netherlands as much as the most of us do, and love to hear your opinions. I hope you enjoy your stay
Yep, these things are standard for most of NL. Even when you’re moving into a larger terraced house, you will often get one of those lifts, just because the stuff that needs to go one or two stories up is so much easier when it doesn’t have to go through the stairs.
(Also I think on our last move we had a literal hundred boxes of (heavy!) books, so that might have contributed to the movers’ desire to oh please get a lift.)
PS: there is a wide variety of levels of service for a move. Many younger people with smaller budgets and less crap to move will just rent a van for a weekend and then buy pizza and beer for all their friends - not unlike in other countries, I think? - but when you move up in the world, especially to the “we wrap it for you” level, there is a point where it becomes cheaper to rent a lift for a day than it is to rent a bunch of extra burly men - and the lifts are cheap enough and ubiquitous enough and the burly men are expensive enough that that point comes quite quickly.
Oh yeah, I did not have movers for most of my 28 moves. It was friends plus a crate of beer and pizza.
We once had the "they pack it for you" service, when a company was sponsoring our move. That was wild. The whole house was packed up within a hour.
Could be that those elevators are required by law (ARBO) to be used by the employer of the movers. Apart from that, these elevators seem to speed up the process, so the job can be done faster and with fewer people. Sounds like a win-win situation for everybody.
I used to work as a mover when I was young and that moving elevator excites me to no end. Damn, I wish we had those!
Just found another hidden gem on youtube.
I am one of your 2.1% German viewers and I found it fascinating that I was actually able to see the paint drying. I can't wait for your next video, 1 hour of boxes being transported on the moving company's elevator.

I've shared your vids to my UK friends who are thinking of living in Amsterdam so hopefully it battles the algorrithm.
Thank you for all the time and work you spend on your videos!
I have to say: I really laughed out loud as you told the next ten minutes would be watching paint to dry! :D We don't have those kind of moving elevators here in Finland but most of our (two or three pane) windows can be opened with a standard window key with hinges on one side. Some moving companies that deal with bigger stuff such as pianos can rent cranes to lift those heavy things down through a window instead of trying to fit them through narrow door openings.
I’m Dutch but I live in the U.K. nowadays. I love watching your videos to see a foreigner’s perspective of the Netherlands, it is fun to see how things the Dutch consider normal are so foreign to other cultures. And I watch it to keep NL close, watch nostalgia, basically. When I see a place I recognise I’ll go “oooh I know where that is!!” And then afterwards I go and complain about how shit the U.K. is in everything it does.
I have nothing to do except 4 university projects so paint drying it is... enjoy the watchtime :D
Thank you for the education. We can take what we’ve learned (US citizens), and present very agreeable arguments to our municipal leaders to rebuild in more efficient and economically friendly ways for its citizens.

@@NotJustBikes Some people will argue it is being used in a "tongue-in-cheek" fashion, it is in fact an asinine meme that reminds us of the cruel nature of Dutch colonization during the Dutch VOC era and trivializes it. It is basically the Dutch equivalent of people commenting S L A V E R Y on American cultural impact. Surely something to be proud of.
@Edward Bentwood While I don't have particular issues with the word itself, I will disagree. In the end it is all about context and most Dutch people using this meme full well know what its origin is and people claiming it is just a 'verb' is nonsense. There is no excuse for any Dutch person to be ignorant of their colonial history because it's all part of the elementary school curriculum. And I get it, nobody is actually getting hurt by 'history', that doesn't mean it isn't in poor taste.
@@forkless Is there an example of colonization in history that is not negative?
I agree the meme is pretty cringe. Maybe I am getting too old.
@@shiroineko13 In human history, probably not. At least not something that springs to mind. That said, the word isn't necessarily always loaded. Animal colonization nor the colonization of Mars doesn't have any negative connotations associated with it -- yet. I guess as humans we may probably screw up the latter as well.
Also! Lots of older (?) Amsterdam houses have those *super* narrow and steep stairs, right? Like almost impossible to get anything larger than a small box up or down. I love those lifts.
Those stairs are to stop an invasion of fat people. So there is no way the USA could invade Holland now.
Greece does moving elevators and my parents used them to move out of a second-floor flat. I have yet to come across these in the UK despite being here for 10 years. We also bashed our stair walls when moved into our current flat and it was painfully slow and horrible for our backs.
I've never seen them here (Gelderland province)
And i've worked in a professional moving company, we did it all by hand, using stairs if no elevator present.
the marks on the wall are just made by amateurs who rushed through (Heavy i suppose?).
I've moved lots of couches, closets and whatnot through the most impossibly small stairs, but where there's a will, there's a way!
Just takes some patience, some brute strength in some cases, and an eye for maneuvering large objects through small doorways and stairwells :')
Kind of similar to packing bags and playing tetris... you know when you're good at it.
p.s. your hands are great "Bumpers" they can take a beating and a small scratch easily heals, However scratches on furniture or walls can be a pain in the ass!

I never realised that moving elevators are a unique thing to the low countries. I always assumed other countries used them as well, especially in similar old-town cities.
In Germany we have them to, but as many of us move entirely without professional help, you don't see them often. We also don't have those hige windows.
They are also used in Turkey, which is a country with challenging terrain.

Hello from December, 2021 almost two years later and currently shopping for a new (to us) home. Your channel has almost 500k subscribers now and is actually getting shown to Canadians, like me, who wish to challenge their thinking about how they live and where they live (the existentialist voice in me sometimes starts asking why I live, but I'll leave that question to the great philosophers of the future). Your "future" video about kids, bikes and their freedom to move about because of the bike friendly infrastructure in the Netherlands - contrasted to the average North American suburban life of a kid, will have a real impact on us. So much so that I now find myself subscribed to your channel and rummaging through your older videos like a panhandler in a gold rush. For the record; according to most manufacturers paint dries in 30 minutes and takes up to 30 days to fully cure. Having previously moved out of a 4th floor walk-up, without one of these elevators, with two tired and hungover "professional" movers - this video makes me to want to cry a little. It's that simple!? GAH! Come on Canada. You can do better.

That's memories for ya.
Truth be told, there aren't really all too many interesting channels about the Dutch. Most videos found when looking for "Dutch" or "Holland" are about either our struggle against water, the things tourists can do here and finally about our food. So this channel is a breath of fresh air.
It is quiet, no bij de at the last 10min. Thanks for learning so much about my native country. And yes Belgium could learn much from your channel. Good to keep a mirrow up.
I have a plan to move to the Netherlands from Japan. Your videos teaches me a lot and motivate me.
The hooks are definitely used still, they are still the best way to move. The elevators are costly, Touw & Blok (Rope & block/stop?) is used to operate the hooks and it can be rented for cheap at several locations for cheap.
That's good to know. I might need to rent one some day. 🤔
It is a great work out for your arms, to operate that Touw & Blok.
@@NotJustBikes beware, it's not as easy as it looks, many a cupboard took a tumble or went through the windows of apartments below due to a sudden gust of wind.
But yeah, that's the traditional way to move house (well, the really, really traditional way involves a 'bakfiets' ;) ).
Going off of memories of a trip to Amsterdam 33 years ago, I knew about the hooks. The Dutch stairways were incredibly narrow and in my hotel the elevator was very small too. I hadn’t noticed the slight slope to the street facing walls. It makes sense though.
What I haven’t seen in your videos that I’ve watched were the devices that kept drivers from parking on sidewalks as they do (or did) in other European cities. I’m referring to the Amsterdammers (metal posts) that I recall being everywhere. Have they been removed or are they just in older positions of the city where I spent most of my time?
Someone told me that the word Amsterdammer had three meanings. The first was the demonym for a person from Amsterdam, the second was the metal posts. I can’t recall what the third one was. If you know, please fill me in.
Nothing makes sense to having narrow, steep stairs except to the tax evaders who started the fashion 300 years ago (houses were taxed by how narrow they were). They are a hazard to the elderly and disabled, which is why Amsterdam is mostly populated by younger people.
The third meaning is a type of beerglas here in NL, also known as a 'vaasje' ( a little vase) in some parts of the country...
I was watching one of your other videos while this played in the background so jokes on you.
The last ten minutes were really captivating! My pulse is still racing from it!
If someone is doing something right, I doubt it would hurt to reaffirm it to keep them doing it.
It is also pretty common in Swtizerland in some cities. I have seen similar elevators many times in Zurich. But they usually use the normal window in the apartment. There are usually no big detachable windows like that on the stair case, and even if it is, you still need to use few stairs to reach the appartment and the door. better to lift it directly to the apartment. I never used it myself, but I didn't have that much stuff last time I moved. Now it would probably be a must if I move again, as I have a lot of stuff.
I swear every time I come on this channel I end up going "WTF WHY DID WE NOT DO THIS?!" Easily removable windows. Mindblowing.
Yes, we stayed watching to the end. We had a coffee and talked about moving to Amsterdam while watching your wall dry 😁 plus watching until the end helps your channel stats 😉

Ok, let's get back to it
After seeing some of your videos two weeks prior when I went on holiday for Florida. I really starten noticing the difference from how roads are there compared to here. Even saw some cyclers on the highway roads. Which I found very creepy to pass by there in Florida. They did not look over there shoulder when the road went from a 3 to 2 lane drive.
What's crazy about Florida is that it's as flat as the Netherlands, but has much better weather. Yet every city is FULL of cars. They don't even have proper public transportation, nevermind cyclling paths. Every time somebody says to me, "they only cycle in the Netherlands because it's flat, and because they don't have winter" I think, if that were true, even more people would cycle in Florida!
Not Just Bikes And they got more space then what we have here in the Netherlands. I went mostly to Disney World. I was comparing it with the efteling. Transit to the efteling is better and faster, and you can get there on a bicycle where they have a spot to park. At Disney it was only parking lots and only cars. It me see the good things from here. ^^
@@Down01986 There are some pretty good explainer videos on here about why Orlando's transit sucks so much, but the tl;dr is that Disney doesn't want people leaving Disney. If it were easy to get around Orlando without a car, people would venture "off property" more often.
What's also funny about Disney World is that it's one of the most walkable neighbourhoods in the entire US, and it also has some of the best public transit in the US! czcams.com/video/33aJsPSvRSk/video.html
Americans love walkability and public transit on vacation, but then go back to their car dependant cities afterwards. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@NotJustBikes I did use the transit at one of the resorts. I was staying in Davenport. From Davenport i went to DSpring to walk for 15 minutes and take the busses from there. Its cheaper, and yes it's very walkable. I even done some resort exploring and from 1 to the other was no problems to get to. But sometime some busses did dissapear out of nowhere. So i had to wait for 45 minutes sometimes.
Classic paint drying trick... I love it. Done as many moves as you have al in one city! More paint drying please - like the colour!
A minute and a half in and I'm loving your good humour. So glad I subscribed. And hey, I'm not Dutch! OK, on with the video....
Did you know that this is one of the best channels on CZcams
this and Tom Scott have taught me more about my country than school ever could
m s yup
Well... with the Corona lockdown, watching paint dry is a fascinating pastime, after 2 whole months of Sundays..
Ha! Nice info on your move but I skimmed through the paint drying until the very end. I enjoy your posts immensely.
Haha you weren't joking about watching the paint dry 😂 Great channel, keep it up!
Well, you've got at least one recent new subscriber from the US of A!
That "real hockey" comment definitely triggered me
This was one of the best vids ever, ive never watched such a great video before! I especially like the part at 12:34
Your videos are not boring, I must admit that not a lot of videos on YT is so much cool to watch.
Those mover elivator's are called Girraf and its normal in every dutch city to use them. I know that because i work at a moving company myself.
"10 minutes watching paint dry..." holy shit he wasn't joking! :D
we need these elevators to Finland!
So many building have small elevators that are suboptimal for moving.
Or don't have elevators at all. "Yay."
Very timely video. Ex-pat from U.S. Just bought a house near Weesp. Moving next month. Fortunately just a few blocks and just 2 floors - no outdoor lifts needed. 28 moves...wow. We've only moved around 15 or 16 times. The last was international move from US to NL. We packed the shipping container ourselves. Also had to unpacked it when the hired help proved to be incompetent (rough!) Love your channel. Great stuff! Bedankt
>ex-pat
You mean immigrant?
@@emie9858 I’m happy to say ‘resident’ just passed inburgeringsexamen. Yea!
I am not Dutch, but I have studied medicine here for four years already and had to learn proficient Dutch fast. So I feel like NL became my second home, and I must say - this channel is gold. Because I don't actually learn anything new - I just like watching good stuff about Netherlands
He actually put 10 minutes of watching paint dry
“What is wrong with you? Why are you still watching this?” 🌷😷🥂
Being of the USA, I have found this channel interesting, and confess to being sucked in by the name. But keep viewing because of the content and now the humor!
Looking forward to more!
Blessings to you!
Loving this in quarantine
