this song is about finally realizing what you have in someone; essentially, a song that has always been playing in the background. At first, the song is easy to ignore, but eventually, the aroma of the music drifts upward until you can't deny it. One can easily run from love, but eventually, the song will catch up with you and you'll be dancing in time to it.. for so long I hadn't listened to the words, its always been "playing in the background" until the words finally made sense in my life. I like that this song is self-contained. it was just hazy, pleasant background music and Norah is such a genius ..she says it " There's a song on low, And your mind just picked up on the sound
Now you know", she knew the harsh reality of the song... you won't understand the song until you can relate...musical genuis

      Way deeper than that Layylanii
      "One Flight Down"
      One flight down
      There's a song on low
Just below our level of everyday consciousness
And your mind just picked up on the sound
      Now you know you're wrong
You have an inkling that not everything is as it seems, why are you here anyway?
      Because it drifts like smoke
And it's been there playing all along
      Now you know
      Now you know
Acceptance of what is (nirvana, self realisation bliss blah blah blah)
The reeds and brass have been weaving
      Leading into a single note
The singularity that is all there is
      In this place
      Where your arms unfold
Here at last you see your ancient face
      Now you know
      Now you know
Seeing who you really are (ancient face)
      The cadence rolls in broken
Plays it over and then goes
      One flight down
      There's a song on low
And it's been there playing all along
      Now you know
      Now you know
That one flight down 'Just below our level of everyday consciousness' comes back and, hey, it's all good
      Love and light *

The chord changes and melody on this Jesse Harris are superlatively well written and intertwined. It feels very emotional yet it’s just a tune about hearing a distant song at the edge of perception. It just works.

@@JourneyBold It is odd how people miss that this is a song about death Just heard the part about this place where your arms unfold. An organ is heard. Church. Your funeral. This is about the sudden realization of mortality and the song that is your life.

    • @JourneyBold
      @JourneyBold Před 2 lety +2

@@silencemeviolateme6076 "One Flight Down" is a profound song about Realization of something unveiled & unifying (all the elements of a literal or proverbial song materializing into a greater awareness) -- most likely, realization of an aspect of Living & the clarity over a misconception. The song, being the metaphor for this awareness of something / someone / some personal expansion, that was always actually there. ...That realization might've come at last into perception either sadly too late or in a mundane moment or perhaps at a special moment in time. The sudden awareness & realization of a quality in oneself or alternatively concerning external person to love.
In the latter case, the realization is of a long-known person whose true qualities were overlooked/missed until now.
In the former case, the realization that one's own life's answer-seeking is suddenly coming into a focus that was actually always there, if one had more keenly seen.
...But sure, you've got an interesting, rich interpretation; which I could certainly see, i.e., the song being about death itself.
That said, it's a bit of a stretch to speak as definitively as you do with complete certainty (ironically in contrast to the song's theme) about someone else's song, and that it has to be about "death".
You might yourself "miss" these prevailing themes in Jones' work within this album. Much of this album is about missed Love and missed ways of understanding oneself and connecting. So, in particular to this song, it's surprising to jump past these clearer themes, and instead proclaim the answer is solely a more tangential possibility - death. (In fact: arms unfolding can mean embracing greater wisdom in being alive. And: seeing one's own "ancient face" can mean to become aware of one's own timeless, wisdom of the ages, in order to live more deeply; the face does not have to be a literal meaning that the face or its soul aged so much it was about to die).
These aspects, to my analysis, come closer to what's deeper in the lyrics in this song. ...However, I'm richer for pondering your unique analysis. So, thank you.

      @silencemeviolateme6076 Před 2 lety +1

@@JourneyBold What is more unveiled and unifying than death. It's interesting how you dismiss death as not profound. That is the realization in the song. Life is the valley of the shadow of death. A song has highs, lows, an end and a beginning. The beginning of the song isn't mentioned. It's not until you are into the song that you notice the sound. That's not love. Violins play instantly. That's not college or your first job. It's life and its inevitable conclusion. The importance of a past high school love you realize was just a few low notes. Meeting a college love was high notes. They compliment each other. If there are no low notes there are no high notes. There are only notes. Ps - ancient face isn't literal. Though in a way it is A certain amount of growing older is noticing the patterns. My nephew looks so much like my brother sometimes. Both have the typical family body build. My niece is so much like me. Like me mom. One day my niece will look at her daughter's face and see her grandma's face. Every year at college is a new batch of kids that are going to show the world how it's done. Every year a new batch of senior citizens put their pencils down and accept their professional defeats and successes and ride off into the sunset in a tropical climate with favorable tax laws. The brotherhood of man is an ancient face. Today, 3000 years ago, we all are the same and live the same basic life. We are unique but we aren't. Pps - the alternative is the song is about me quitting my last job. Toward the end things were clear. At the start I didn't know I would quit, but I kinda did. Hindsight that song had been playing from the beginning. That first week of no help. The jealous coworker. Their using my commitment to the job against me. But I think the song is more than that. This is a low note. Let's hope the complementary high note is yet to come before my song flashes before my eyes and goes.
