2019 Kia Niro EV "Hidden" Features

  • The 2019 Kia Niro EV is loaded with features, but some things that are pretty hard to find and almost impossible to know about unless you read the giant manual. These not so obvious features should also apply to the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric as well as the 2020 Kia Soul EV since both are very similar cars technology-wise and share DNA.

    This probably pertains to all Kia Niro models but thought to mention it as it concerned my personal safety. From the factory I believe Kia set the doors to automatically unlock when the push button shut the car off. I found it concerning that no matter who was around the car this would happen. Fortunately Kia allows this to be changed in the settings menu controlled by the steering wheel mode button. The settings are in the “door” section. You then choose to turn off the automatic unlock function. The instructions are in the manual for this but I had missed it. I am sure some others have as well. The last thing a person wants is for the doors to unlock with potential threats nearby. We live in times where car jackings and other bad things are becoming more common. Keeping our safety buffering space can make the difference in a pinch.

      Thanks for the post, and you are correct. It is one of the first things I changed after receiving my car in May 2019, except my 2019 Niro EV was set to unlock when putting the car in Park!!! I set mine to unlock when I power off the car, this way I can look around and decide when I want them to unlock by powering off the car. I do, however, live in a safe place. Thanks again for pointing this out, good catch 🙂

    • @barryhaeger4284
      @barryhaeger4284 Před 4 lety

      Yeah but the Flappy Padels behind the steering wheel adjust the regen levels while driving. Set to Auto and regen is adaptive based on conditions and terrain as the SatNav has information on the incline ahead which is also used during route calculation. For more economic driving and particularly highway driving use the lowest level of regeneration. Regeneration is far from 100% efficient at recovering the kinetic energy of the momentum whereas allowing the vehicle to coast uses almost all of the kinetic energy of your momentum to move the vehicle the losses only from aerodynamic and rolling resistance

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 4 lety +1

      @@barryhaeger4284 Actually, the auto regen setting adapts based on the radar at the front of the Niro EV. When the car is in Auto Regen and set to a lower level via the paddles (ex. 0 or 1), and the Niro EV approaches a vehicle, if the vehicle in front slows down the Niro will detect it, the symbol on the dash for the regen setting turns from white to blue, and the Niro adds more regen automatically to slow down. Also to note, it is still possible to use the paddles to adjust the regen to any setting (0, 1, 2, 3) when the car is in Auto Regen mode and it will work exactly the same as when the car is not in Auto Regen mode, with the addition of adaptive regen depending on something being detected by the radar.

    Question: I have a 2020 Niro PHEV and I do not like that it lacks an on/off button on the "Liftgate room lamp". The only way I know to turn off this light (other than pulling a fuse) is to close the latch with a screwdriver. One afternoon the rear hatch did not close completely, which kept the light on for a few hours. Fortunately, I noticed it when it got dark but it could have discharged the small 12V battery if it had been on longer. I tried prying on the light (via slots on top & end) to see if I could take it out and then add a switch but I'm afraid to break it. Do you know whether a special tool is req'd?

    I purchased my Kia Niro EV in Nov 2019 and just found your CZcams channel. I’m really enjoying the information in your videos. I’d like to know more about the driving modes - comparisons especially sport mode. Also why wouldn’t I just keep the car in regen-3 all the time?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 4 lety +2

      Good morning, I am happy you like my videos and thanks for subscribing! After having experimented with a few settings, I find the most energy efficient mode is 0 and using the paddles to activate regen when needed, at the level needed, then returning to 0 to continue driving. If you set the regen to 0 you will notice that you don't have to keep the accelerator pedal pressed all the time like when you are in mode 3, or 2, or 1. This means that you barely use any power to keep the car moving. If you drive in 1, 2, or 3 all the time you have to keep the pedal pressed to keep a steady speed.
      Regarding the modes, this is a question of preference, as well as how ecological you want to be for range. On a long trip I would suggest Eco, or Normal, and regen 0. For some fun I use Sport mode. Essentially the different modes will make the accelerator pedal more, or less, responsive. In Sport mode the accelerator pedal is very sensitive to input and you have access to all of the power from the first millimeter of a pedal press. When in Eco mode the pedal is more "sponge-like" and to access the full power you need to floor it. Normal is somewhere in the middle and what I use almost all of the time. I hope this helps. 🙂

    • @sly1024
      @sly1024 Před 3 lety

      @@EV-olution That is interesting. I only had my Nero EV for a few days, but I set the regen level to auto, as suggested by many forums and I quite like it. It's like engine braking with a gas car, I just lift my foot off the acc pedal and it slows down. It even knows if I'm quickly coming up on a slower car, then it decelerates more rapidly. I very rarely need to step on the brakes. It's a shame we can't do full one pedal driving. Although, people say you can pull the left paddle to fully stop the car, but that sounds weird (haven't tried it yet).
      Why does an EV have to be similar in behavior to a gas car? At least let us enjoy the benefits! I'd love to have "auto hold" on permanently and do one pedal driving...
      I don't fully understand how the electric system works, but I don't think it needs less power to keep the car running on lower level. It's just not going to auto-brake when you release the pedal. I'll try it though.
      I love the channel, very informative, great presentation! Keep it up!

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 3 lety

      @@sly1024 I am glad you like my videos, thank you. The regen settings only really affect how much the car slows down when you come off of the accelerator pedal. The more the car slows down because of regen, the more power the car creates energy and puts it back into the battery. I agree that it would be nice to have Auto Hold persistent, I keep turning it on when I get in my car. Also, since this is an older video I have changed the way I drive my Niro a little bit. I like regen 0 and use the paddles if needed and use the left paddle to stop the car most of the time. I don't use Auto Regen because I find it is too sensitive to cars slowing down, specifically on the highway, or faster secondary roads.
      I have not put a video out in quite some time because my company has been keeping me very busy, but I do have some videos in the works. Stay tuned 🙂

    • @mleboeuf8764
      @mleboeuf8764 Před 2 lety

      You lose momentum while using lv 1,2, or lv 3 regenerative breaking. That energy is greater than the energy you can retake and put back into the battery. So its more ecologic and smooth to use LV 0 and breake when you need to, as it will activate the regenerative breaks anyway, unless you break too fast.( if you break too fast, its your disk brakes alone that do the breaking.)

      Hi there. FYI, my name is André, not Wayne. I did not get a charger with the purchase of my car as there was no promo at the time. I was one of the first to receive a Niro EV in Québec and the car was not even listed in the dealer system, let alone on ChargeHub. With that being said, you should buy a charger that is at least 30 amps if you want proper charging speeds and it is worth spending the price difference to get the Bosch 30amp. For my car I bought the Flo X5 smart EVSE since I wanted a Québec made product that looks good and was connected to the Internet so I could get charging reports and manage the EVSE remotely. I needed this for my business since I can't deduct gas expenses anymore.

      I was offered a L2 charger by my dealer here in BC. A Bosch EV200. I was expecting a charger that would indeed recharge a full battery in under 10 hrs, in line with the owners manual and widely reported by the automotive press. Until my electrician pointed out that the offer was a 16A version which he claims to be not L2 for a Niro. Technically L2 charging is defined as 208-240V AC charging an EV battery in under 10 hrs, the typical down time during the night. For the Niro (and the new Soul as well) you will need a 30A model. I am still in conversation with the dealer who should pay for the 30A model as part of the deal I made when buying the car. Bosch will upgrade the 16A model offered by Kia to 30A with 25ft cable for about $350 (incl tax), at least that is what I was told last week.

    Nice informative videos. I have a Kona in the middle trim (Kona has 3 trim levels, I think Niro only has 2?). Anyway, from what I can tell the trick with the side mirror is Kia only, I see no mention of it in my Hyundai manual and it didn't work when I tried it. The manual also even says to return the control to the middle position to avoid inadvertently moving the mirrors while driving. Also, my car also does not have the "Smart Regeneration System" option (which you mentioned in the part 2 video, not this one above) , though that feature does appear to be present for the Ultimate trim level on the Kona (the manual says "for cars equipped with Smart Cruise Control System"). Oh well, at least the short cut for setting the Regen and climate defaults for each drive mode worked for me! I had previously found and set those through the regular menu, but this is quicker and simpler.

    If you break too fast, its your disk brakes alone that do the breaking, not the regenerative. As its too fast, the computer dont have time and assume it is an emergency.

      Correct. Hybrid braking only applies in normal braking situations. Any time that the vehicle needs to stop quickly it is the friction brakes that are used.

Because when I bought my car it did, then a few days later it didn't. As they all said there's no mention of this anywhere within there note about this feature. They all believed it was a 1st Gen special feature that they wouldn't have on newer Gen. Guess they were wrong, LoL.
      But honestly, I loved finding all the "Easter Eggs" in the Niro!

      There are several studies that have compared overall cost of ownership of pure EV vs comparable gas car and every time the EV costs less to own vs the gas car. There was one that compared a Tesla Model 3 vs a Honda Civic and after 5 years the Civic costs more to own. Even before EVs started to drop in price there are studies that prove that you save over the life of ownership. Here is just one example. I hope this helps. www.2degreesinstitute.org/reports/comparing_fuel_and_maintenance_costs_of_electric_and_gas_powered_vehicles_in_canada.pdf

      They were closer in price than the dacia but my EV is lightyears more advanced. I wouldn't even say these two cars are comparable, never mind a Dacia. The Dacia, even a 2021 version doesn't have the same level of features, safety and tech, to my old Ceed. At least the studies tried to use a more popular comparable car...
