I think Mang Taithul hit the nail on the head when he list corruption as the cause which is true,opium cultivation is not the cause of misery in our society,it's the result of misery. Have you seen our govt schools?roads?public infrastructure as basic as toilets?Hospitals?every one knows a govt school teacher who never goes to school or a doctor who has his own private practise on the side,or the PDS system being stranglehold by those with MLAS . When you can't rely on govt schools for your children's education,govt Hospitals for your medical needs, roads that have more potholes than a torn Jean. There's no way the average family who has no govt job can sustain his family with a daily earning of 500 per day.Also there's no scope for switching to agricultural crops such as potato or cabbage when your agricultural field is on the mountains and you have to carry your produce on your back. Why?because all the sanction for the roads have been used to built nice houses and cars that cost 30 lac by you know who. People can counter me on this but if you have seen the growth of churachandpur as a town and as a commercial hub,it's been just 4 or 5 years,it had been stagnant for the last 10 ,20 years. We all know this growth isn't the result of any MLA or govt scheme,it's private enterprise and private businesses that fuels that growth. Before the supply of money was concentrated to few,we all know who the few are. Their money hardly circulated in our economy, they are used to buy plots in imphal or flats in Delhi or even build malls outside our town depriving our town the much needed economic boost. But recently such entrepreneurship is picking up,not entirely but significantly because of the cultivators on the hills. Because they are normal people like you and I and they spend their money in the town,there's more labor needs,more houses need,more groceries need,just more consumer spending,which is good for the one who sells chicken beside the road to the scooter dealers. About the price of real estate going up,that is partly true,no denying about that. But before,it was only the one with govt jobs with a lot of side incomes to exploit and our "nampi workers" that had money. They would buy lands,carve out a new village and every one would be thrown to the mercy of this newly ordained chief. So what I am trying to say is,don't be hypocrites,and smell the coffee,why do we as a society have to resort to such cultivation?Ask the real questions,the questions of why and how. Most people who are victims of drug abuse and addiction are often from broken families ,poor background with no scope for any purposeful job that pays because it just is that hard to pick yourself up and make something for yourself in a town like ours.
