  • Is there such thing as a sex link coturnix quail? Wouldn't it be great to tell the sex of the bird from day one?

    I was wondering if you’d be willing to FaceTime to help me identify male and female of the 8 quail I just hatched!

    Just wondering, how does that even work (as in which cross will do this)? I’d be interested to purchase some this spring if I can get my pen finished. Hope you start making videos again!

    I was looking into getting hatching eggs this year do you happen to have the golden color quail Too? Just curious, can't find the breeder I went through a few years ago on eBay and they had a whole range of them too. The way you ship looks the same so I wouldn't be surprised if you were the person since they came exactly like that with the foam etc. What colors might come in the 110 mixed quail color package?

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 4 lety

      A lot of varieties, over a dozen. If you want a specific color I can do a custom order. Email me at theurbanaviary@gmail.com and I can get it going for you.

    Whaaaaaaattt that’s exactly the color of the chicks I hatched! So apparently I got 1 boy 2 girls 🤣 thank you for the info. I wanted only girls but the boy being my favorite (imprinted on me) i won’t rehome him

      Aren't there different colors varieties at hatch anyways? What colors were your hens and rooster? They could be sex links or they might not be. It's not as simple as them just being the same color as what he shows in the video

    I hatched a quail that I thought was a boy but turned out to be a girl, it was dark and had the solid stripes like the male

      Charles Martin they all have the reddish color at the tips sometimes some don’t but u gotta wait 2 weeks bc they might be females. You don’t know for sure until the feathers come in

      Not sex linked quail also can be these colors. Just because you have a quail that's the same color does not mean it is a sex link. the breeding has to be done in a specific cross meaning the male has to be one color and the hens another. If they are switched you don't get sex links but you do get the same colors. Same goes for just breeding these colors. The breeding must be done correctly and intentionally for this to apply. 😊

    New to the quail thing. Why don’t they like eating the male quail?

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 5 lety

      Not everybody is in it for the meat, to some it's all about the eggs.

    • @dfishman76
      @dfishman76 Před 5 lety

      Urban Aviary if that was the case would you not want to eat the males over the hens?

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 5 lety

      Not necessarily. There's not a huge size difference between the males and females

    • @dfishman76
      @dfishman76 Před 5 lety

      Urban Aviary so females are bigger?

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 5 lety +3

      It depends a lot on the specific genetics of the bird, but I found that generally my biggest birds are hens.

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 4 lety

      You can tape their legs together the right distance apart, but I've never wasted my time with it. I usually cull those.

    This might be the dumbest comment yet...but....I decided I should taste quail before deciding to raise them.....my question is : is there a way to eat quail without having to constantly remove bones from your mouth ? By the way, I'm on a Carnivore diet and it takes 4-5 quail to satiety.....FWIW.

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 5 lety

      I've rarely had to pick bones out. I usually eat the legs like tiny drumsticks and then eat the breasts with a fork. I don't try to pick it clean like a buffalo wing or anything. When I do get a piece of bone it's from the leg where I cut the lower section off with scissors during processing. If you cut right at the joint instead of the bone then it all but eliminates that problem.
