The Kidd destroyer is one of the most exciting ships in the US Navy, if only because the crew chose a 17th century Scottish pirate William Kidd as their mascot, and raised a pirate flag. Fletcher class destroyers, which included Kidd, were notable for their endurance, but this ship has survived even after successful kamikaze attack.
Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

My grandfather, Lieutenant James Edward Gilboy, was the damage control officer during the kamikaze attack. I'm grateful his vessel was saved and made into a museum.

Grew up and still live in Louisiana. Made many trips to her as a child. One of the very very VERY few ships I actually like.
This ship is my #1 priority in WoWS, with #2 being New Orleans.
They've both got huge sentimental value to me.
My last name is Fletcher. I grew up in New Orleans (moved to Baton Rouge after Katrina), and I had two relatives who served on a Fletcher and a New Orleans.
Planning to volunteer at the Kidd as well.

@@thomass647 There is a second and third factor; expertise, and assets while most documentaries may have a few 3D artists, that work on a few projects here and there, Wargaming has an experienced team whom has spent years hard at work, building stages, modelling and animating vehicles, and better learning how to take advantage of their inhouse game engine, which works just fine for films, and as all the assets have already been made for their games, producing these high quality CGI films is relatively easy for them as they have already done most of the work in the production of their games.

@@thomass647 it's not about funding. It's about skills. Even some CZcams animator can create a full length animation alone. Better than Hollywood animation that made with hundreds of animators.

I live about 2 miles from this memorial museum, here in Baton Rouge. I was also stationed aboard the USS Sarsfield DD-837 in 1976 as my first duty station. Sarsfied is a Gearing class destroyer, laid down in January, 1945. When I visit the Kidd Museum it’s like being back in the fleet as the two destroyers are virtually identical.

My dad was on this ship when the kamikaze hit at Okinawa in 1945. He was born in 1926, and barely got service. He is mentioned in the ships log for missing muster one day, lol. The entry for the day the kamikaze hit, April 11, was ominous with the listings of the dead and injured. Thankfully my father's name was not listed there. The next day, April 12, FDR died of a heart attack. So I can only imagine the morale on the ship as they withdrew from battle with dead and wounded on board, under continuing attack, compounded by the death of the President. Oh well, no shortage of trials on both sides in any war.

What I like about destroyers is they multi-functionality but when the enemy is nearby, they are the first into the fray and usually get hit first. Because they have to defend the transports and carriers even if they have to sacrifice themselves.

The Kidd-Class DDGs that you refer to were especially formidable in weaponry, capabilities, and accommodations. I was glad the U.S. kept them, but sad to see them ultimately retired - far too soon in my opinion.

That class of destroyers was also nicknamed the "Dead Admirals Class" as each of their namesakes - Kidd, Chandler, Scott, and Callahan - were killed in action.
I agree, they were all decommissioned far too early. Fortunately, Kidd and her sister ships were purchased by Taiwan and have been proudly serving in their navy.
USS Kidd has since had her name assigned to another destroyer, DDG-100. Kidd's name lives on honorably.

The only mistake they made with their visual model giving specification's is that they are using a round bridge Fletcher, The USS KIDD was a Square bridge fletcher... which they show later.

Thank you for releasing this. I love hearing about the great ships that served with distinction. However, please talk to someone about pronunciation. Your narrator is good, but the script needed changes. i.e. "MK.12" is "Mark 12", 155 mm guns are 5" radar guided and assisted guns, etc.

I seem to remember a story about trouble in the design of the overhead on the bridge deck on this class ... something like it was not high enough. The story I heard was that one of the gals on the design team, to figure the height took an average of the heights of the men in the team and added a foot, which proved too low in rough seas. True or not it's an interesting story!

Laffey was stuck by a Czech-made shell fired from German shore batteries while supporting Overlord. Read The Ship That Would Not Die. It was written by her skipper that commander he trough the war. He also skippered the earlier Laffey that was sunk during the Solomon's campaign.

They represented the Kidd very good in the Game from what i can say. Only the Ability to shoot AntiAir Shells with the Main Guns is not available. She can take and deal a good Amount of Damage if skilled right. She is best played as a Supporter or battling other DD´s.
