Big Thanks to all the bass groovers who put out bass lessons, tutorials, reviews and playing tips here on You Tube. It has kept me motivated and teaching me bass playing and just plain making it fun.
This bass quest of mine started December 5 2022. I’m a mandolin player/jammer and have been needing some inspiration to get to my next level and get to understanding modes and mastering my fretboard knowledge. Had just read the book “The Practice of Practice” and was inspired by the part that says play other instruments. Though I do play acoustic guitar as well…it always seems like practice. Was up watching You Tube and a bass video came on with a youngster named Ellen. She was groovin’ and smiling and head bobbing and it gave me a big ol’ grin. That led me to more bass videos. After all that mandolin high end I just knew I needed some bottom. Needed my feet to vibrate. Called my brother in law Dan and borrowed his old Fender Music Master bass and got to learning. Found my head bobbing and leg bouncing. Been going at the bass hard and loving it so much. Maybe all those years playing bluegrass mandolin ended up leading me to bass. And Funk!!!
The best part of this journey is I am hearing music differently. The bass fills my head. I am dancing and bopping around the house more. It does not seem like practice. It feels I’m playing music rather than practicing. And what I wished came true…it is opening up my mandolin playing but all I want to be now is a bass player. Electric bass.
I have a long way to go of course. Fairly recently retired and playing daily. Dreaming it. Hearing bass in my head at night.
January 22nd I went and bought a Squire 70s Vibe Jazz bass. Funny that I am now more into laying down groove that lead playing a mandolin. My calling is maybe been sought and found.
Then on February 26 I got a Stingray Classic RAY24CA. They came out the year I graduated high school. !976. I had to happen. Fast forward to March 3rd... I went to visit and play a 2003 Fender American Classic P-Bass in a local music store. I left the shop and though about all night. It felt amazing and I love that P bass sound and simplicity. Next morning I took the Squire Jazz bass and and my first beat-up and rode hard 1996 Gibson F5 mandolin that I don't play anymore as I have a great Northfield mandolin. Traded the Mandolin and Squire for the Fender P bass even- steven. Tit for Tat.Now I know what more quality bass feel like in the hands. Loving the low end.

Thanks so much to Mark Smith from Talking Bass, Jayme Lewis DeadBeat Studios, Tom Bornemann Bass Lessons, Rich Brown, Cambridge Bass Lessons, Luke from Become a Bassist, Báo on Bass, Fusilli Jerry, Benny the Bassman, Johnny Cox Music, Low End Lobster, Marcello Feldman, Dan Hawkins, Federico Malaman, Scott's Bass Lessons, Bass Buzz, Julia from Thomann Music. Been watching countless videos from all of the to gather knowledge. My wife calls it my "Late Night Junior College Course Study."
Also like watching Lee and Nathan from Anderton's Music jamming on basses. Man they can pick and it is just plain fun to watch and listen . Plus I see bunch of cool bosses. Shout out to Anthony Pecora at Empire Music for his videos showing basses that come into their shop and hearing him play them. He has a cool funky groove. - Zábava
My CZcams algorithm is all backpacking and bass. This crossover must mean the world is getting awesome again. Your videos just keep getting better. Thanks for everything
Mine too! And drywall videos.
You are a true troubadour-a real renaissance man! Such an inspiration for us over 60!
I see it as play. There is a 12 year old living in me!
Music is a majic that I don't posess and forever admire those that do. One of my new old man hobbies is lockpicking.
lock picking, locksmithing, dreadlocks, bagels and lox. I like all things locks! Fun to dive into things.
Yay! Love the basses, Shug. I've been playing bass for over 40 years and can definitely say you've got the groove. Have a blast!🔊
Thankee. I've been playing hours daily. Just really drawn to it. Just bassing for bass sake~
Both are very beautiful. My brother used to be a professional bassist. I’m very impressed on how quickly you picked that up but then your talents are unmeasurable. Looking forward to hearing more.
I have been putting in hours daily. Mainly cause it id truly been fun for me. Thankee.
It sounds like you are in your happy place, have fun! I love seeing people get so excited over things they enjoy, makes me smile. :) Thanks for sharing and hope we will hear some more bass! :) :)
Truly. It its bringing me true joy and does not seem like practice. I have no agenda other than to try to get above average on it and feel that satisfaction at the end of a day.
What a beauty! Sweet sounds coming!
Was playing it today. Still getting to know it.
thanks for this review! im a bedroom bassist and was looking at these for their passive version. your talent for only a couple of months on the bass at the time you released this vid is so impressive (:
They have some nice basses and just came out with some new models for 2024
Proper, bloody, lovely!!
Beautiful my friend! Thanks for groovin us along
Whooooo buddddy!)))))))
Thankee. It is just plain fun. That is what I was looking for.
I've been a bass player since I was 11 years old and it's my favorite instrument. I'm really happy to see someone joining the team. Good luck with your bass adventure. Keep it groovin, whoooo buddy.
Liking the bass team and community. Groove on I shall......
Love the new bass. Great tone. Good grove too brother. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks and thankee. So fun~~
It does have a great growl.
Ah, Shug! You are amazing! I love the look on your face as you opened up the box for the first time. So excited! I was watching you at the same time I unpacked my Amok box from Norway. The Rottweiler thought it was her Bark Box so I had to run a little defense. So happy for you. Rock on! Pretty impressive you only 3 months in.
Enjoy that Amok. I love hanging mine and chair mode and sitting in it when I have to catch up on phone calls. Gonna take mine out in the Spring. Got the new lightweight and it is real nice. Sorry the Rott was disappointed...haaaa
Damn Shug! I am really impressed. Lol, first comment on a backpacking channel I've watched for years... Goes to the man rocking out on the bass! Thanks for all the positive vibes you've sent my way, Shug.
I am honored!!! Funny how new things keep on coming to you in life if you let them.
Awesome Man! All's secure at the low end. Rock on!
Going with the low flow.....
Good for you Shug. Always moving forward. ENJOY....
Must move into new realms to keeps life lively.
I'm excited too !!
Yessir!
Outstanding shug. Love a bass player me. A real favourite of mine was Mick Karn who played with Japan. His work on Gentlemen Take Polaroids is so good. Ian
There is a throwback song! the 80s were fun.
Really nice. We are very close in age. I remember several people wearing hats like yours when we were kids. Not so much now. Like it.
We had men in the neighborhood who wore them.
That firetruck red bass goes well with the hat! You already slap a lot better than I - keep posting these videos, maybe it will get me back in that woodshed. Watch out for icicles!
It is vibrant and the neck feel is amazing for such an affordable bass. I've been at it hours daily the last 3 months. It fills my life with good stuff right now and I needed a new muse.
WHOO-HOO! Congrats & happy pickin'
Picking and plucking lallygagging and mucking'.
The trim in my kitchen is that color..."brick dust." New pursuits make new brain cells, we need to keep that up in our dotage. Good on ya!
Nice. Sounds like a lively kitchen. I hear you on the brain thing. Keep that grey matter active~~~
I just purchased the Larry Carlton Sire S7FM in blue. LOVE IT!! good to see a fellow Sire-ite!
They seem to be a real up and coming company. Many great reviews. Love the feel of mine. Neck is so smooth.
Love the bass, love the t- shirt! Happy playing Shug!✌🏼🎸
Me too! You are the first to allude to it~
@@shugemery Just like you said in your last podcast interview (which my daughter and I loved) I’m one of those viewers who take in background details as well as the cool content. 😁🧟♂️
Your bass playing is coming right along my friend! Love the mandolin though. Cheers! 🥷⛺️💫
Thanks and thankee....Not abandoned the mandolin at all. Got into bass to help my mando picking. But right now the bass calls the most.
You are multi-talented sir…I tip my hat to you.
As my teachers said.....gifted underachiever. I took that as I'm gifted at underachieving.
5:08 Wow!! I love the emblem with your Kilroy on it! Sweet!😍👍🏻👍🏻
Ha to think about that one for a moment-o...!
Far out & AWESOME cool 😎.... enjoy your new bass...
Today is doing taxes and bass playing. Little tax work then some bass. Repeat....
Awesome!
Thankee. My fingers are sore from playing the Red Devil all day!
Funky! Woooo buddy! And it matches your hat!!!
Was hoping it would when I unboxed it. Almost a Ferrari red.
Very nice, Shug. I grew up in Music City USA and never get tired of great music.
Enjoy!
And it sounds to me like you have played for years, Buddy.
Ahh thanks. I now I have a ways to go but I have no agenda other than to keep at it and get better in time.
I have a Marcus Miller Jazz bass that I have been using for years! Love it!
Ahhh...you are a groover. I knew I liked you. Have you checked out Reverend basses? They are nice. I see myself moving to a up to a V5 someday. Or the V7 but I need to decide if I want to mess with all the active EQ controls. I'm a simple man! Do you use all the controls on yours a lot?
@@shugemery I don't want to give the wrong impression, I have Marcus Miller bass, but I am a terrible bass player. I love the feel of that bass though. I'm a very basic player.
@@mountainwanderer Something about the bass. Fun to hold and play. Even is basic form.
❤❤Liked it, liked it a lot!
Big groovy thankee.
Very cool!!
Really good value on this Sire bass. Having a lot of fun with it.
Ever since my son starting playing bass several years ago I gained a new appreciation for the instrument. I particularly enjoy your Music Man. Gotta say, I could totally picture you with a Bongo (also by Music Man). Pricey though. Enjoy!
I too have seen the light. Try to listen to song with no bass. Sounds lackluster. Those MusicMans are really nice. Came out in 1976, the year I graduated high school.
Nice! I got a Sire P5 last fall and they make great basses! Especially if you need a lefty model.
It feels so nice on the neck. Really liking it. I switch around between all three basses and am coming to the realization that they are all different and play differently. I may just be a Tri-Bass Plucker. I'm a lefty but play backwards....
I know this wasn't intentional but you had me searching YT for some old funk from the '80s. They had some great bass guitar work in that music.
Tower of Power!
You always surprise me Shugs ❤
From Guitar to Mandolin, harmonica, the gazoo, the band saw, and divining rod, tin can and the dripping sound from the sink ...lol
I am learning a Bach tune on nostril flute now. My future is set.
Looks like a nice guitar from a reputable (small) company. I'm happy for you, bro! Sounds good, too. I love the bass guitar. Enjoy!
It is filling a my days with pleasure. And sore fingertips!
Very cool man!
Thanks Slowhike. I'm really enjoying it! czcams.com/video/-Fh5XfYvlao/video.html
Damn Shug! You got some skills. “Slappin’ da bass”
I been putting in some time for the last 3 months. So enjoying it and just look forward to playing everyday. Just cause..... Thankee
Shug, I like these kind of videos. I like the camping, but I like it when you mix it up too. I might be in the minority, but I really like the variety. Y'know the Halloween vids, the BBQ vids, all cool! Thanks for posting this. I dig it!
Thanks. They the ones I’m really a bit more excited about these days. Hammocks can only go so far…haaaa
Those licks were as funky as your hat!😂
I buy a lot of used gear from Musicians Friend. Always satisfied.
I’ll look into Sweet Water per your recommendation.
Thanks, Shug!
I've been happy with their service. And candy bag! Nice to have good companies as folks always seem to waste so much time on bad companies.
I don't know anything about guitars, it's beautiful and sounds awesome, ATB
I feels so nice. I'm just got bass fever and it is fun. To be new you have to start something new~~
That is SUCH a Shug Beast Bass!!! 🎉
Might righty!
woooooo buddy, Shug on bass. big surprise. wise to get the P variant, saves on batteries ;-)
Yessir. Playing daily. Already sold the Sire bass and gone through some others looking for the bass for me. I look forward to playing everyday. Brought my love of playing back. Thankee
czcams.com/video/C_GkxAquItc/video.html
Love the bass thing! I just got a Sire P5 and love it. You got the necessary trifecta with a J, P, and MM. Now 5 string.
Playing that Sire right now. Like it. Fender P bass is closest to my heart for some sort of sentimental reason. Not ready for a 5 string quite yet. I do like having just 4 to contend with. But I'm a lazy man....
@@shugemery Like hammocks. It's a sickness.
@@DarrellHaase But a wonderful and positive sickness. All love and joy!!
I know a lot of us folks born in 58' with a hard head, typed from experience . . .
Nice axe!!
Thanks. Already sold that one to a friend and put the dough toward my G&L CLF Research L-1000 bass.
Love the sound of that P Bass.
Hard to top a P-Bass for sure. I already sold this Sire to get a G&L CLF Research L-1000. It is Leo Fenders last P bass-like design.
Still say bass is where my heart lies. Been playing guitar for 10 years or so, but happiest when I put on the bass.
Thinking about a Squire Bass VI. Although I’d love a Music Man. They’ve got good grunt.
This retirement seems to be fitting in just dandy with you.
Thanks for another video.
I got a Squire first but this Sire feels so much better. Especially the neck and frets. No sharp edges hanging over. The MusicMans are awesome. I am really starting to like retirement.
@@shugemery my brother in law always says he doesn’t know what to do first since he retired!
Like a lot of guitars, if you do a little work to get them right, it makes it a much better experience.
I’ve learned a lot from Dave’s World of Fun.
Another great CZcamsr.
Happy days fella.
@@Brijoolz Oh...I have already caught onto Dave and set my action and truss rods on my Fender and Stirling. Even go the cool string gauges and stuff. Intonation too. More fun even when not playing.
Hi Shug! I am already a fan of your mandolin, but more good is gooder. Play on, Shug! Wooobuddy!
The bass feels so much cooler...haaa! Everyone thinks my mandolin is a ukulele...now that hurts~
Just when you think shug can't get any cooler, he starts slapping the bass. Sounds great!
I am a late-in-life-wanna-be-funkster~~~ Thankee!
vimeo.com/manage/videos/817480797
Good choice, Shug!
I concur. Great bass for $350~~
Oh my brother, I knew you were a bass player the first time I saw ya!
Funny how things in life end up leading you towards something that you never thought it would. Be open and let it happen....
Beautiful bass Shug! Congratulations! I'm a banjo player of about 20 years that has played upright bass for about 15 years and recently got in to electric bass. Now there are 4 of them. They multiply like rabbits don't they? Just bought a Fender Jazz bass Saturday night. Like you, I'm up all night playing. Learning is the best part.
They do multiply. Each one is so different in its own way. I am going to try and stop at 3 basses. But....I do want a Fender Jazz someday. Enjoy yours. What model did you get?
@@shugemery It's the Player Limited Edition Jazz. Green Burst color. I have a Fender Broad Bass and an Ibanez that plays extremely well for a cheaper bass. I was up all last night working in Lukas Miller "Find Yourself". He's Willie Nelsons son. Pretty cool bass playing in that song.
Marcus Miller has the same hat as you do. 🤠 Sounds like now you have "den bösen Bass".
Markus dons a fine chapeau~~
NEW TOYS !!! Gotta keep the mind expanding.
At this age I can justify better toys for sure. My fingertips are throbbing.
Shug! Your bass skills sound awesome to me!
I hope to get fairly good someday just for the sake of it. Thankee. I have been putting some time in on it as beginners must.
Loved the rare earth
@@hipgroove68 They were my first 8 track tape!
Dangit Shug! You got me again. Ive been watching your hammock videos for years and now your gonna hook me with bass videos. Ive been playing (poorly) for almost 20 years. Keep up the great work. I always look forward to seeing you on the tube.
I'll try to keep the bass or music vide to a "just now and then" thing. Though maybe not. Hammocks can only take a feller so far...
From a drummer....I say... AWESOME!
I'm looking forward to jamming with a real drummer sometime. One 1 baby....
Dang it sounds good, u gotta learn “Stir it up”. Seems like a fun bass-line to play. Have fun brother l!
I'll have to get in a reggae groove someday.
So sweet
I'm truly enjoying it. Immensely.
Christmas time came early . EARLY . in March. WHOO BUD-DAAYYY!
I give myself the best presents~~
Happy New Guitar Day!
Thankee. Maybe I need cake too!
I picked up a v7 this summer. I find it just as good, if not better than a MIA Fender jazz.
Good luck with the new toy.
I keep hearing that from folks. These Sires are really nice and mine is on the low end. In time I may get a P8 or P10 dx. Whoooooo Buddy))))
@@shugemery There’s a part of me that wants a p8 and a M7, then all the base’s would be covered - or is it basses?
You're like a reverse John Paul Jones. He started out with a bass (and organ) and later in life he wanted to master the mandolin so he showed up unannounced at a bluegrass festival mandolin workshop to learn from instructors there. It was so interesting to learn that about him. He may be your doppelganger. (Still waiting on his review of the Dutchware camilion. )
I have seen him play mandolin. Something about those two instruments. They are like frick and frack. Maybe he got into it to inspire his bass play ing like I got into bass to inspire my mandolin playing.
Sean - I think your backpack just got a little teenie bit heavier -🤣 I loved to lay down some lead riffs on my bass when I played it for our group. at first, I got some grimaces, however, I finally won people over, or at least I think I did, because it sounds so smooth and "different" when it comes from the bass guitar. Of course, when you miss playing the lead guitar and have to play the bass, it's a little compromise 🤪🤔
Haaa. The guitar player wants the leads right. I discovered the band Vulfpeck during this quest and their bass player Joe Dart is like a lead player in the band though alway holding the groove.
"Get Ready" "Get Reeeeady"! 😃
My first 8 track tape was Rare Earth Live in Concert. Gift from my sister.
nice score, I had an ESP B50 I loved, carpal tunnel forced me to sell it
those very small marks I wouldnt worry about
I wanted the marks as it saved me $60. Not even noticeable. Sorry you had to sell it.
@@shugemery exactly, rock on
I too picked up the bass late in life. A friend her me play guitar and said, “Why don’t you try the bass? It’s got two fewer strings!”
But I’ve dug the sound and the vibe. Learning blues bass primarily. First bass was an Ibanez 200 that’s my jam bass and also my autograph bass (so far Gerry McAvoy (Rory Gallagher, Band of Friends) and Jesske Hume (The Felice Brothers) have signed it. Last year I got a Thunderbird. Man! Two very different basses.
I love watching Julia Hofer’s vids too
The blues await me. Messed a little it is a "feel" for sure. Rory!!! Too cool. Love that Thunderbird look for sure. Julia has the best bass-face.
@@shugemery awesome-and I agree about Julia’s bassface. And her fingers! Those long digits were made for bass.
Wow! Belle guitare, Shug! And you really don't seem like a newbie to bass either!
I recall trying to play one in high school...but juggling took over~~
I am really digging Shug the bassist!
I am enjoying him too~~!! Haaa. Thankee iPlod
A signature model I've been wanting to get is the Spector Doug Wimbish model. I met him at a guitar/bass expo and he's the nicest guy you'd ever meet... willingly goes out of his way to talk with everyone and really gets into a conversation. The spector basses are sweet too and play fast
As I travel this bass path I keep hearing about more and more basses that I have never heard of or seen. Keeps me interested!
@shugemery It won't take long until you have 6 more 😂
A good used one to seek out is a vintage Peavey T-40. Nice and heavy and just an overall decent collection add on.
Wonder why it is that these electric basses seem to multiply? My brother in law has 10 guitars and 2 basses. Reckon the all seem to fill a different whole in sound and feel. I do like those Peaveys for sure.
@shugemery when I use to play out a lot I always had 2 or 3 set up and ready to go. Other thing for me was really the different inspirations. I always played in bands with more original music so a new bass always means a whole new set of riffs. I'd sit down and record myself playing them, then upload to youtube privately so I won't forget them for the future.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 great !
Thanks. Good times on the low end here.
After seeing this, I find myself wondering how well Geddy Lee can juggle. Well done, Shug!
He is a bit of a nerd (compliment) so I bet he kinda can.
Good morning
Guitar is sweet looking good
I got up EARLY to play it!!
soupah doupah 👏👏👏
Soupah fun-and-grins!
H'mm.
That there is a real pretty bass.
Worth the count...
Me and it done made friends....uh huhhh
Makes me wanna bring my drums over for a jam session 😊
I'll come to you!! On the one baby...on the one~
Can I join you guys on guitar? I "sing" too, if you can call it that!
Hey Mr. Bass-man, whoooo budddeeeeehhhh
Low-End Lollygag~~
Insta-liked! Shug and Strings!?!? Love it
Thankee feller!
Hell yeah! Pick up "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" for some great bass fundamentals. Not the movie, the book with bass transcriptions.
I will. Thanks for that. Though I don't read notation.
@@shugemery comes with CDs. You have a good enough ear. Or just learn "what's going on" album
@@BobCorsaro Aye. Big Motown fan here...
If you haven’t already, get yourself a nice compressor pedal. Compressors are essential kit for bass players. I like the boss bc-1x or the MXR M87.
I've been looking and watching reviews on them to understand them and decide which one. Leaning towards the MXR M87 as it looked easy to understand in a review.
I've met Marcus Miller but I've never met the Shug.
Perhaps someday...Your giant 4 string contra bass
mandolin is sounding pretty sweet, Brother.
Did Markus slap you?...haaa. Cool you met him. Contra mando. I'll never see the bass the same way now!
I was thinking you had the right hat on for a bass unboxing. I like your new bass, a bit a of a crisp sound to it. Nice color too. Is the Fender the heaviest? Always drives me nuts when the body is so light makes it off balance. Good deal, whoo buddy!
The Sterling Musicman is the heaviest. Then maybe the Fender by a wee bit. Then the new one. Well balanced though.
I have it and it s verygood (I own several others basses )
I sold it to a bass playing friend. I really liked it but needed to make room for my G&L CLF L-1000 bass. I think someday I'd get a Sire P8.
Gorgeous bass! Was that a little bit of black magic women I heard you playing? Easily one of my favorite songs to play in bass!
I was playing "Get Ready" Rare Earth's version. And Level 42 "Starchild." Working on both of those songs. Filling my time and winter days...
U GET EM SHUG
Oh...I got 'em.
Time to start listening to Primus.
Les Claypool! Love his wacky him.
Looks nice Shug, but I don't know how your going to fit that in a backpack..lol Have a great day 👍
I may just have to give up backpacking. It is a lot of work anyways. Not enough sitting!!
I might be weird but I'd love to see a les claypool and shug dueling banjos on the bass video
Les is wacky in the best of ways. Don't think I could keep up with his bassology.....
Shug, hello ol' friend. I say this like I have known you forever. Recently went to the time change Hang at Yates, where my son played guitar at the campfire. Might I suggest your next Bass Be Accustic? For the car camping trips.
I may end up with one of those someday. Could play in a Mariachi band! But I'd bring my mandolin for a campfire..
Nice looking axe. I'll be happy to help with a list of basic setup tools you are probably going to want soon. Just let me know. I have done a lot, lot, lot of guitar setups for people. My side hustle. I'll send you a card and sticker if you want.
Hey Yo...I've already adjusted truss rods and action and intonation on Sterling and Fender. Watched a bunch of videos and got the gauges, string action ruler and truss rod relief tool to learn and do. I like it. Sorta like working on my control line planes kinda sorta. Thanks feller.
Yeah buddy…slappuh the bassuh
My Mom slapped me. I slap the bass now. Thank for the inspiration Mom~

I have been logging some time on the bass. Retired Life!
The M/K play any instruments? Woodwinds maybe? Congrats and enjoy your new sound.
He played trumpet in high school.
Famous Louises is up for sale case ya havent heard.
I heard they are closing on Sundays but up for sale!!! Noooooooo
Maybe you could Meg a heads-up for me. I see an acoustic bass in your Nut Hut in the not so distant future!!!😂
For some reason I'm all about electric. I'm too lazy to haul a big ol' Kay around...haaaa
@@shugemery I was more thinking of a guitar sized bass.I'm not a bass player but I played around with a Taylor acoustic bass at a guitar center. It sounded heavenly and I think it would be fun for jamming with bluegrass buds. Although a big ol' bass sounds like fun too!!
Now that could and may happen. I'll have to put a grip on one someday.
Chad's my sales rep over there. I made a joke because I purchases a Epiphone Brendon Small GhostHorse Explorer from them and they didn't put in the candy, I told him that I expected two on my next order (which was a case or something for another guitar) and he had shipping throw in a bunch I think there was like 20 in there. Those Bit-o-honeys man. and the lime flavored mint style ones...
