Yes. I was in NYC last week staying on the 57th floor of a huge building and was reminded of Gawande's comment about studying the construction of skyscrapers. I did find solice there :)
      Glad you enjoyed it.

Unfortunately Boeing doesn't take their checklist seriously but I hope this surgeon does.

We have grown up for the most part with Cheklists of some sort, our parents did it, regardless of their job or role.
The most simplistic check list, the good old Shopping list.
We go out to buy a week or 2 worth of groceries, we make a list and check it off as we go.
We are human and therefore make mistakes, errors, etc but if we list our task out, we have a far better chance to achieve it!
Go shopping hungry, studies have revealed this is the worst time to shop because everything is attractive to the shopper, the total bill for shopping ends up being huge!! Make a list, stick to the list, it doesnt matter if you are hungry, full, tired, have a headache, etc as long as you tick or cross off that list, and only that list, you achieve the exact result you set out to.
It's amazing how something so simplistic can be so critical, and so effective in our lives, everywhere!
I did this with State Emergency Service work as a team leader, we get to a storm damage job, and we checklist:
    -Safe to leave the truck?
-Safe to approach the damaged area?
    -Identify the tasks required
-Adequite crew to combat the tasks required
-Adequite tools/Resources to combat the required tasks
-Safety to surroundings (people, property, etc)
-Ongoing weather conditions, will it still be safe as we work on the job
I can go on with the lists, but it prompted each of our team to opening think about their safety first, their team mate's safety second, and the safety of the job site before we even parked the truck.
While thinking of safety, they were then subconciously thinking of what they needed to acheive at the jobsite, and how they were going to go about it, so they had pre-planned the task without even thinking.
Lists like this increased productivity, increased safety, decreased on-job accidents, and helped everyone work better with each other!
Such a simplistic answer to Management!
