Make a SELF-WATERING plant - BBC Microbit project for beginners

- I'm a crappy plant mom. I never remember to water my plants. And they all want different things at different times. After killing a whole bunch of succulents, I realised that electronics can solve the problem. You can make a plant that waters itself with just a few electronic parts. Marvin the spider plant is really happy about his new automatic watering system.

I appreciate the simplicity of the circuit and how well you explained it.
Cheers :)
thanks for the project! newbie microbit in training here ;-)
I wish you the best of luck on your microbit journey!
Amazing video, thanks! Can I ask what the blue component is that you put into the breadboard at 1:06?
Good Morning Hannah! Great Project. But i didn't understand exactly how you connected the wires. Can you post a clear diagram, with the exact wire connections?
Why is the temperature relevant in your microbit code ?
Can you post a link to the wires you use to connect tbe moisture sensor to the micro bit please? A link to Amazon, ebay or aliexpress would be great. I live in the UK.
Sure! I used something like this: amzn.to/3dpmZ2l
I used the same hardware, same connections but still Pump not working...is there any reason to it?
Excuse me, in place of the transistor, could you use a solid relay?
Sure, you could use a relay - but you'd have to find one with the right spec. Many relays need a higher voltage than the microbit can supply to be triggered.
Well that's way easier with an arduino and a relay module.
Can I use another transistor I have one but it’s not 2n7000 ? Thank you
You can use another transistor, depending on what its specifications are. Some only work at higher voltages, for example. If you know what kind of transistor you have, you should be able to find a datasheet for it online, then you can work out what its specifications are. You could also just try and build the project to see if it works :)
Um .. what about the time and how much water will pour out ? that's a bit diffrenet for every plant . Do we need to code that too or what
Good question! You can change those things in the code to suit your particular plant. The code isn't on a timer - it runs continuously and checks the soil moisture. If the soil is too dry, it runs the pump for 2 seconds. If your plant likes being drier or wetter, you can change the moisture level at which the pump turns on. And you can also check how much water your pump moves in two seconds - if you want less water, run the pump for a shorter amount of time, or if you want more water, run it for longer. Hope this helps!
@@HannahMakes Is the moisture level in your example code 800 cus I'm not sure which number is the moisture level
Hello, I hope you're doing well. I'm Khushboo from EduBoard, where we focus on creating educational coding content for kids. I need technical assistance with creating a project involving the Microbit. Could you please help me with this?

Swearing at the end is a shame, now I can't show this to my students...
Thanks for the comment - that's not actually something I thought about when I was making the video, and it's definitely something I'll keep in mind for the future now :) Just so I know, is bleeped swearing tolerable, or is it a case of not even the suggestion of it? (PS I'd be happy to upload or share a non-sweary version of this if it's any help to you :)? )
@@HannahMakes Hi Hannah, thanks for the reply. Yes a non-swearing version would be great, it could then be included in my lesson and shared with the other members of my team. This is a great video to introduce the 'extras' that you can add to a Microbit to create something 'special'. I'm teaching 12-15yr olds in an international school in Malaysia, the less swearing the better but bleeping would be OK in most cases I expect. (P.s I am the same person, just seem to have posted from my other account!)

😲 How did you guess? ;)
