In just a few hours, Bond proved to be a great Dad: peeling an apple for mathilde without a fuss, giving her his sweater when it was going to get cold, and here, assuring her when she's frightened that everything is going to be alright in a calm tone. Wish he had more time with her
You forgot to mention the scene in the forest where Bond holds his little daughter as a protective shield when they are pursued by Saffin's henchmen.
He had All The Time In The World.
@DRIVER :Thanks, apparently I'm not the only one who found Daniel Craig's James Bond downright the worst of them all. From Casino Royal to Skyfal he did quite well but from Specter it deteriorated quickly and the combination Craig and Sedoux only made it worse.
when the heck was Matilde frightened? At no point does she cry, she was more concerned with finding her bunny than the mortal danger all around her. she might be on the spectrum and i sincerely doubt she even knows the name of the weird man who peeled an apple and asked her how it was like he just prepared a 5-course meal. throwing a pop tart in her face and shoving her into the mini van would've been more dad-ly. why doesn't bond make scrambled eggs, his specialty? because i doubt the filmmakers read the books. Con-Air is how you handle a character meeting a daughter they've never met. way more emotion and character than this movie which was a joke.
@DRIVER because Casino Royale and Skyfall are complete stories, You can watch them by themselves without ever watching the others. Quantum, Spectre, and No Time to Die are reliant on you seeing all the other films.

I thought both actors did very well. It’s a shame Rami wasn’t given more to do
What I truly like about this scene is when James understood Safin's loss and how he wanted revenge as much as he, they are the same with different paths to choose.
Lyutsifer Safin serves as a foil to James Bond; both lost their parents in a very short age (In James’ case, his parents died tragically in a climbing accident while Safin’s family died murdered by Mr. White by a dioxin attack, via Blofeld’s orders, which also scarred him in the process.) and they are both professional killers. As a result of their respective tragedies, both had a loss of innocence in their own respective. However, they differ in their ways of dealing with loss. Bond has accepted and let go of his losses in life, be it his parents, Vesper Lynd, Felix Leiter or M. No matter how much Bond loses, he still fights for the greater good, believing innocence is still worth fighting for. On the other hand however, Safin became consumed by loss, believing that innocence is a redundant concept and that in order to save the world, the fate of people must be under his control. This is a result of him being unable let go of the fact that the deaths of his family was something he was unable to control. Ultimately, Safin serves as a darker example if James Bond never lets go of his tragic past and let it control him instead of the other way around.
Great explanation! It in a way does explain Safin's motive. A lot of people said his character didn't really make sense. My confusion was that he wanted to take revenge on Spectre who are responsible for his family's death. He got it. Wouldn't you like find a way to move on or find another way to make peace with your past? Probably far fetched but not unrealistic. Why would he suddenly want to kill the entire world when his life goal of revenge was already achieved? Your explanation definitely shed some light on the reason Safin decided to commit world genocide after his revenge.
@@ryanli8371
he wasnt gonna kill the entire world. just masses on a really big scale. as for why, he wanted to shape the world like how his personal tragedy has shaped him once. the movie making great deal about the importance of the family. and the main villain is not an exception. he counted on heracles. a weapon not just deadly to its target but also the target's family. and with a weapon like that no nation could afford to cross the line.
he wanted to turn pain and loss into something constractive and give the world the order it needs. become the man who call the shots for the rest of the world and think for it.
Also I notice these two men being opposite in their give and take with Madeline. Safin took a women from her ( her mother) and bond gave her one( their daughter)
In other words. The clichéd "You and I are not so different" villainous monologue
That’s what I love about this scene, when Bond talks abut how both him and Saffin didn’t get a choice to enter the fight and instead it was chosen for them, and that the weapons that Saffin had made will take that chance from everyone else
you see Safin through his facial features actually acknowledge James words, and for a moment he looks like he may agree, but if he does then all he thought and believed his life and purpose to be was wasted and he cannot accept it and makes the point that people need to be controlled because they crave it, they crave the reassurance of order, not caring what happens to humanity outside his control.
but i like that they made that point where you actually see Saffin realize James is right but he cannot accept it and instead doubles down.
Safin started to believe he was a god after saving Madeleine, (hence his name Lucifer) he loves to show how he is in control of everything, he sees himself as a savior, THAT was the point of his character and most people just dont get it
*4:44** The way Safin seems to have a flashback to his family... Very sad.*
Clearly the trauma leaves deep scares imprinted in Safin’s mind. His life was thrust into a deep hole of utter darkness afterwards.
Probably the best aspect of Jame’s growth, when he compares safin to himself, not who they are currently, but their origin. To have everything that gave you a foundation, to suddenly and dispassionately be ripped away. That chance to grow in a world without being thrust into the cold-unforgiving harshness of reality. That Bond could compare, contrast and differentiate himself. A man who has searched for completion and another who can never fill it. The Man who cares, against the man who doesn’t. The man who cares will always win, because he believes so will give that chance to someone else, that is courage and compassion fortified by conviction. The man who doesn’t care can not see why it matters in that it merely serves a purpose without meaning. This is why ignorance, and apathy will always end up on the burnt smoking cinder of time and history.

I've never heard a bigger pile of platitudinous bullshit in my life. Oh wait, yes I have - from every single priest in history.
Now Safin is by far even scarier than Blofeld himself.
It’s like meeting with The Devil himself (hence the name Lyutsifer (Lucifer in Russian))

Kudos to Malek for doing the best with a character in my opinion that was underdeveloped. I like the concept of Safin and his mysterious aura, but he just felt incomplete and his motives weren't that convincing. Given NTTD wraps up the events of Spectre, Blofield should be the last villain. Safin had no true link to Bond to make him worthy of Craig's final villain. Safin as the main antagonist in another film where his full potential can be unleashed makes more sense.
Would have made more sense if he was doctor no tbh.
@@nathanallsop6531 No not really IMO, Safin and Dr. No are completely different characters. Dr. No was killed off in that film. NTTD is about wrapping up lose ends along with Bond dealing with Blofled. It would be a completely illogical fit.
i disagree, Saffin could have been developed more but his motives were to me clear, he believed that his bio weapons could bring a new world order, and one of control, Saffin’s view is to try and have as much control as possible and believes that his chemical weapon will be bale to do so.
Also Saffin does have some connection as both Saffin and Bond are foils, they were victims who had their lives decided for them,
James lost his parents to a cruel accident, and saffin's family was murdered by Spectre, James adoptive father was killed by Blofeld, as well...
so aside from revenge abasing Spectre, Saffin was much like bond, someone whose choice was taken from him
and james makes the point, “it’s not fair to be put into the fight without choosing it for yourself..."
Blofeld should've been the last villain, but the problem is, the Blofeld we were given in Spectre was terrible.
@@tcaudiobooks737 I blame the writing. They had the right guy
*3:27** In several parts, Safin pauses to finish his speech. He's like an undead carcass seeking revenge, a zombie. That's what made him so scary besides his deformities.*
I am legitimately curious as to how the makeup artists made the chemical facial deformities look so real on Rami Malek’s face.

He’s my second favorite behind Le Chiffre

Crazy enough. Silva was the only one that succeeded in defeating Bond. He completed his objectives. Safin was the only one that succeeded in killing Bond. I love it

Le chiffre didn’t really accomplish anything except beat bond in one game of poker, though I am glad that all the villains in the Craig era didn’t get exaggerated deaths like Sanchez or kanaga
“The thing that no one wants to admit is that most people want things to happen to them. We tell each other lies about the fight for free will and independence, but we don't really want that. We want to be told how to live and then die when we're not looking. People want oblivion, and a few of us are born to build it for them. So here I am, their invisible god, sneaking under their skin.”
I didn’t think Rami Malek’s Russian accent was that bad. It’s fantastic when compared to Ray Winstone’s accent in Black Widow.
I never really felt he was going for Russian despite his name. I think it was more of a melting pot accent.
@@ryanfoster2869 To me, his voice felt like the Freddie Mercury voice he used in Bohemian Rhapsody mixed with Rami trying to do a British accent
@@superjackster0165 I can dig that
In fairness and to contradict myself, I actually really enjoyed Ray Winstone in Black Widow and thought he was fairly solid in the film although his Russian accent did need work.
Rami Malek literally cannot act.
We all know that this was the Avengers Endgame of the James Bond franchise. Thanos would've liked Safin very much. And this is one of the best hero meets villain moments ever.
Does Heracles work on aliens like Thanos? Alien dna is totally different from humans.
Disagree. Thanos is a much better character with layers to him, Safin didn’t have much screen time or charisma to be compared to other villain characters
Nah, thanos was scary because of his goal while safin was scary because of his aura. In theory, thanos would have understood safin’s conquest but would have thought bigger because his plan resolves with the universe. Thanos defiantly would have respected safin from his backstory and his goal.
Safin is an absolute savage and psychopath. He is cunning, coldly intelligent and unwilling to bend.
The way his voice drawls out slowly and calmly. How he looks up at Bond when his mother's death is insinuated.
Safin is every child who had everything taken from him and then was kicked to the curb to rot. He's the angry young man who wants to balance his loss with others' destruction.
THAT's what makes him horrifying. He cuts too close to home.
And we thought Bloefeld was the real monster.
Flawed though the film certainly is, this is undoubtedly my favourite scene in the film. Cinematography, acting, performance. Truly stellar work.
Sometimes it’s just good to have scene where people just talk. Especially when these two are similar in a sense.
I think Rami is mesmerizing
Would’ve been perfection if he was Dr. No. Complete circle of the franchise
I agree. I totally believe he is the Craig continuity’s version of Dr. No. that does not mean they need to have the same name.
Safin - fantastic villain - my def fav of all time - the little girl is beautiful
Safin is definitely a sadistic sociopath, a complete contrast to Silva’s grandiose psychopath.
"My mother laid my feet as I watched her die." That gave me a heart ache.
I think when Bond is talking about fighting for innocence, he's implicitly referring to his daughter and Madeleine. He wants to protect Mathilde's innocence by making sure she and her mom survive and he wants to protect Madeleine's because he knows that she was not an accomplice for SPECTRE. The stakes here are very personal. Because if it wasn't for them, all Bond would do is come to Safin's island, kill him, and blow up the island. Just another Tuesday at work.
I thought Safin’s Japanese fetish was very cool. Shades of “you only live twice”. His noh theatre mask. The stone garden. His Yukata. Even the way bond surrenders bowing down. It’s not directly stated but it’s there.
Do you think we're blind? Why do you say this as if the average person doesn't see it clearly?
It is directly shown.
Brilliant villain strategy: kidnap the lover and daughter of a top agent who could kill you with a toothpick and then threaten to kill his daughter in front of him…that’ll work out well
The most no-nonsense villain in the whole series, bar none.
"You And I Aren't So Different" *check*
The Villain has a God Complex *check*
"You know Mr. Bond... you and I are not so different"
"We're completely different"
"Actually yes, you're right".
He did a good job as the villain Safin
is he doctor no One of his henchmen says doctor The buyers are here
@@junkieboi45 no he was not Dr No or a henchman. Dr No was killed off by Bond in Dr No and he worked for Spectre. Safin was against Spectre as his own parents were murdered and he was permanently disfigured which is why he takes revenge and killing members of organization.
Safin's potential as a villain was totally ruined by how poorly-defined his motivations were.
Like, in the first half of the film, his motivation is revenge - not too original, a bit cliche, but it's a tried and tested villain motivation. Then, he gets what he wants and... then what? He kidnaps Bond's girlfriend because he has a creepy crush on her, but then he takes her daughter because he wants a family, but then he reveals this plan to genocide a gigantic group of people across the world, and he lets the girl go because she's not his priority anymore, but then he wants to be an arms dealer, but if so why is he slaughtering so many potential clients? It's all a damn mess, to be frank, and his motivations are so poorly-thought out that he actively contradicts himself. To the point of hindering his own evil plan, for God's sake.
He could have been a brilliant foil for bond; an image of what Bond COULD have been if he weren't as soulful, didn't have as much faith in people - his trust in Madelinn and the trauma from Vesper's betrayal that hinders it, that's a central theme to Bond's arc in this film. Safin could have been a brilliant examination of this theme, demonstrating how two people could be so similar but differ so much in how vulnerable they allow themselves to be.
Instead, we got a mediocre villain that gave Daniel Criag's bond a much worse sendoff than he deserved.
The Closer Look thought of a perfect way to make Safin a more intimidating villain - Safin, James and Madeleine all having tension with one another. In particular with, it should be Safin holding her hostage to get to Bond but also to want revenge of his own for her being a daughter of Spectre. It would’ve been nice to see the consequences of Madeleine being a Spectre daughter elaborated, ie: Safin
He has a major disadvantage: he's mentally ill.
Reminds me of the temple level from Goldeneye 64.
Daniel Craig and rami malek must have had a great fun time doing this scene
Wonder how many takes it must of taken before both were serious
Rami Malek did a really good job playing Lyutsifer Safin.
Rami Malek did an incredible job as a Bond villain. I thought it would be hard to top Javier Bardem's villain character in Skyfall, but damn Mr. Malek topped that.
Love the zen decor lol.
Matches Safin’s expensive blue Japanese kimono.
IDC No Time To Die is my favorite Bond film
Why does every new bond villain live in an abandoned pyramid or something?
This scene is fantastic
Safin said something totally right
3:34 I’ve realised how similar Safin and Ultron are:
“You want to protect the world, but you don’t want it to change. How is humanity saved if it’s not allowed to evolve?”
Hey your right I noticed that to. But Safin is scarier and more sinister in nature.
There's some Loki there too. Both believed humanity wanted to kneel and be a slave to a greater authority.
Safin's plan doesn't make any sense in regards to Bond's daughter. After this scene she bites his hand and he simply lets her go. So why go through all of this trouble?
Safin let Mathilde go because she didn't have more use to him since he used her to try to get Bond out of the island and the plan failed. Even when he released Mathilde, Safin thought that she would never find a way leave the island.
he has the poison tailored to Matilda and her daughter on him so he has a back up plan
Saffin also saw himself as god, being able to choose who will die and who will be saved, so when Mathilde rebukes him allows, he allows her to go and no longer protect her and leave her to whatever fate befalls her.
I understand the point of this adorable child the less and less in the film in general. If Bond was not allowed to be a normal loving father anyway because of Madeleine's mean lie,James might as well have died for Madeleine alone without involving a child for that,if he only loves Madeleine in the end.
SAFIN JAMES BOND I COULD BE SPEAKING TO MY OWN REFLECTION

5:52 Safin seems to reach for something when Bond starts shooting, is that meant to be Safin pressing a button to trigger the trapdoor? The trapdoor seems to start moving before he actually reaches whatever he's going for.
5:52 look at Mathilde’s face when bond starts shooting. She flinched and covered her ears
Scariest bond villain ever.
Rami 💜
*1:37** "And life is all about leaving something behind... Isn't it?".*
That is undoubtedly true, for better or worse. Like the Egyptian’s pyramids and the Inca’s Machu Picchu for a positive example.
They should have given Rami more to do. He could have been a great villain
Yeah I watched it the other day and he gives a good performance but safin is a part of a movie that's nearly 3 hours long for like 6 minutes, and he barely has any impact on scenes he's not in (beyond the implications creating heavy contradictions with his character).
It's a throw back to the opening embasy firrfight of Casino Royale, when he drops his pistol, only to pull out a fresh one.
Good clip
They missed the boat with this villain. One scene between Bond and Safin. Whereas the greats like Christopher Lee, Sean Bean and Christopher Walken get many and written dialogue. Almost showing what Bond would be if he went rogue.
3:34 craig repeating the lines of malek.
5:51 Where did Bond keep his PPK hidden all that time so Safin and his guards couldn't see it? If it were in one of his front trouser pockets, why didn't Safin have his guards search him?
Very sloppy writing

I would loved to have been at the table read.
I'm sorry, but I have to nitpick the director here (Daniel is the best still): 1) Safin asks Bond to disarm his side weapon. That's it? I mean, no frisking? His watch, communication wire, trackers etc? I mean c'mon 2) Safin throws pillow in the air, machine guns... the litte girl is as calm as watching cartoons.. maybe some emotions.... she knows Bond, she could've called out to him with a scream, tried to get away from Safin while Safin holds her back making her sit down..... this scene could be have been much more palpable (ok, she's Bond's daughter, so she's cold by DNA, but c'mon) 3) Shoot out - wtf happened? Safin goes down a secret chamber, 3 guards shot dead with 2 shots (1 shot by Safin)? ...... sorry, but had to say it...
1) Safin knows he's in control (as to why he bothers having a secret escape". 2) The girl looks distressed, be it shock or whatever, Madelaine tells her to he calm as she'll go to her and so she does just that. 3) Bond literally shoots the guard behind Safin, turns 180° clockwise to shoot the guard to his right and then continues down that clockwise path to shoot the last guard. Just watch it closely.

This scene is so ridiculous. Easily the silliest dialogue in the entire series and Malik is overacting.
why is he hot tho
This was the only aspect/part of the fil I didn't like. Not for any technical or acting issues I just found it to disturbing to see a small child being held by a madman under danger. I just do not like children being in a movie where they are at enormous danger by a madman. It is simply to terrifying for this sooky viewer. I was scared stiff for her even though obviously we knew she would not be hurt. Mind you in her teen years she would need a lot of therapy just from recalling experiences of being with a creepy deranged man.
What was the point of shooting the pillow lol
I think to show at any moment he can just toss her and they’d shoot her like the pillow. Hence why he says “she’s as light as a feather” and throws the pillow
Intimidation. Safin wants to remind Bond that any sudden movements would have him shot on the spot.
@justinguyos5476 : Not really accurate : that pillow symbolized his daughter "who is as soft as a feather" and whose life he could instantly take away if Bond made a wrong move or antagonized him.
How Safin escapes through that trapdoor is such lazy storytelling
