Episode 82 of Love At First Scent
This was a CZcams Live broadcast streamed on Sunday 19th April 2020. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
In this episode, I decided to go down memory lane and share some of the classic treasures in my collection. The perfumes I covered are:
Yes Saint Laurent Opium - fairly recent extrait and vintage edt (at the 6:00 minute mark)
Guy Laroche Drakkar Noir (at the 22:00 minute mark)
Paloma Picasso Minotaure (at the 29:00 minute mark)
Christian Dior Dune (at the 36:00 minute mark)
There was also a brief preview of coming attractions, in which I mistakenly said that Relax was by Benetton. It was, of course, by Davidoff.
Please let me know below if you enjoyed this episode and would like to see similar ones in the future.

I went to the launch party at Studio 54 for Opium...It was an extremely sumptuous event...very Asian with thick bamboo timbers tied w/red silk cording and tassles and lots of palm and bamboo greenery..with magnificent silk hand painted pillows of various sizes ranging from oversized to "normal" sized throw pillows...arrangements of heliconias and other exotic florals..etc etc etc....What a night......Thanks for the reveal and I remember Opium in a much more "heavy" form...Bob

Missed it as I slept a bit too much this afternoon. 🤦‍♂️ More of these please!
    Episode ideas:
    - Difficult/challenging to wear but beautiful perfumes. Somewhat related, perfumes you absolutely disliked but now you love them.
    - Similar to SL, episodes on your favourite compositions from L'Artisan Parfumeur, Vero Kern, Naomi Goodsir, Papillon, and others niche/indie houses.
    - Perfumers profiles: you pick a perfumer and discuss his/her works - more specifically his/her lesser known, or earlier creations, least liked ones, most popular ones, your favourite ones, and so on.

As someone obsessed with scent since the early 70's, I can't believe I haven't come across your CZcams videos before. I have never heard anyone speak so beautifully about perfume let alone so intelligently. As a teenage boy the first cologne that I fell in love with was Aramis but I graduated to Azuree shortly thereafter, wearing it on and off though the years and greatly admire the 2019 reformulation. Other loves have been Tabu, Opium, Mitsouko, Calandre as well as countless others, so you can imagine how much your presentation of Classic Perfumes meant to me. Thank you for being here!

I just adore Opium by YSL and I’m on the younger side. It’s so opulent and luxurious smelling. It’s powdery, resinous and ambery, dark, complex and even a bit smoky to my nose. I often wear it in winter, such a fitting way to wear it when it’s snowing and it just warms you up and envelopes you in the silage like a hug. Recently, I’ve started wearing it during summer nights when I’m going on a date or a night out with the girls and I layer it with Coco Noir or Chanel no 5 and I get so many compliments on it! When they’re combined, you can probably smell me from a block away!

I am so happy to have discovered your fabulous account! A friend used the original Opium in 1977 from the get go, and it was absolutely hated by everyone. Wherever she went she found people distancing from her. For quite a while it was generally hated and voted the worst perfume in various polls in my country. (I suspect many were simply overdoing it with too generous splashes) Personally I couldn't wrap my head around it, but nonetheless felt there was 'something' in there. I bought the pure perfume in 1994, by then a little softend down, but never felt comfortable wearing it. Normally I can wear very "heavy" perfumes, and they turn out very fresh and balanced on me. But never Opium. Smelling it recently I found it very reformulated from the original. On the other hand I absolutely loved Cinnabar, buying it from 1978. The Chinese Red colouring trademark, the fruity, spicy freshness, radiating an abundance of joy and confidence. The spices brought a hint of being a little 'Christmasy', but it was fantastic during fall and winter season. Cinnabar was a HUGE perfume and (to me) had everything Opium was missing. Where Opium was dark only Cinnabar had a bright, fiery, playful and alluring seductiveness. As for the 1992 'Dune' : Simply Wonderful. So many changes and boring scent scapes were emerging by that time. Dune was heaven sent. I immediately fell in love with its 'fresh, soft breeze & salty sea' - vibe. And of course the sunny beach-vibe as well, but I did like the 'windy, salty sea breeze'- feeling the most. It was a huge success as an office, daytime perfume, as well as a beautiful evening perfume. It is now so heavily reformulated that in a shop I was adviced not to smell it if I was accustomed to the original. Off topic but I hope it's OK mentioning this: I recently tried a flanker of "Allure", named "Tendre" (white box) and it was very pleasant. It has some of the softness of 'Chanel no.5 Eau Premiere', but the 'Tendre' is like a gentle mist of the original Allure.
I would love to hear your takes on the following perfumes : "First" Van Cleef & Arpels, ~ "Private Collection Jasmine White Moss" Estee Lauder ~ "24 Faubourg" Hermes. The last two mentioned possibly discontinued, but I mention them nonetheless.

I was waiting for something like this but did not think to say it. What I was thinking to ask you was to do an episode on old vintage masculines. A one off hit from brands of old. Stuff from Lauder, Salvador Dali, Bogart, Rochas, etc. I guess it can be a chapter or two in the book of Scented Memory Lane, and you've done just that!
I would like this series to continue for as long as you can continue it.
My own scented memory lane is not as exciting as yours I'm afraid. Being born in 1985, my memories began in the 90's. I only started collecting a few years ago. Up until then I just used whatever was lying around. Those included D&G PH, Allure, Boss Bottled, CK One. I only knew about the existence of Farenheit, Angel, Opium, Antaeus, Kouros less than ten years ago. You can imagine when I found out that private collections and niche existed too!
Of course, my dad wore Old Spice, Tabac, Denim, Brut....which I remember sniffing in the bathroom and secretly wearing. For special occasions he took out his Cacharel PH and Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte. He gave me a mini of the latter when I was 8 or 9. I took it with me to school everyday. I don't remember what his bottle looked like but the mini was dark green, without an atomiser, said Hermes on it and smelled like what the Concentre version smells like today.
For my mom, it was Poison Poison Poison. She still has an empty and dusty vintage bottle stashed away somewhere. I guess she stopped buying it some time in the late 90's. Now she wears whatever her children buy for her. But her standards remain high.
I'm the only one in my family who wears a variety of perfume, including those that are marketed to women. Their comments never end when they smell my sillage. Sometimes I smell like an Arab woman, they tell me. Or an expired fizzy drink. Like a sweaty grandmother. Like oud diluted in urine. When I wore Songe d'un bois my sister said, " You smell like a hooker dunked in powder". Well, if I'm going to enjoy my perfume then let us entertain ourselves and make them suffer for our amusement. Hehehehehe
Oh yes, Zest soap, for when one needed energy to perform a task. And Imperial Leather...the only soap with paper stuck to it! I have not seen it in years if not a decade. It smelled horrible but I want it.

I just picked up another bottle of Drakkar Noir, it’s not horrible. A little more minty in the opening, a little less mossy to my nose.
I wore it as a signature scent from 18-22. I liked the bottle design.
I think you nailed it in your description about being aggressively clean. I get that vibe.
I still rock it, just a lot less sprays than most current designers from today. I find 4 sprays lasts 8 hours on my skin.

As for the 80s, Anaïs Anaïs was Life for young women and it's the 1st perfume I bought with my hard earned cash. I loved it. Then there was Obsession, wow! That was the sexiest perfume ever. I had a friend who wore it and even though she was no J-Lo, thanks to Obsession's sillage she had men weak at their knees in a 20 ft radius. Now I think they are pretty bad but they have their place in my olfactory memory.

When we were fifteen in the 80s my friend wore Poison to school in the morning.. lots of it during History class!! Most of us wore national eau de colognes but later we got Loulou and Anais Anais for our birthdays. I remember we wore a lot of purple, and some kids were into The Cure 💜
By the way, fantastic flowers! Are those orchids?

What a fun video! I put on some vintage Opium to watch it (from a sample I had from a brooklyn museum class that coincided with their studio 54 exhibit). I love it but after an hour I am beyond over it! Haha I knew and loved it as a teenager in the 80’s but I must have had better endurance then.
My two significant teenage boyfriends wore Tuscany Per Uomo and Armani eau pour homme. I never hear anyone discussing these and am curious how aficionados such as yourself rate them. Most teenage boys wore Drakkar Noir, so that one had funny less than grand connotations. It’s what high school smelled like. I am trying hard to recall what I wore and the only two full sized bottles I recall were an Anais Anais (NOT very original) and the first Armani for women. I also loved samples and minis that my mother would get in gifts with purchase, but sadly it never occurred to me that these things could be saved and collected.
I am also now reminded of perfume sample strips in magazines and rubbing them on my wrists. Oh the ‘80’s!!!

  • @ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293

Oh this was great fun! I'm currently going through a nostalgic fugue state of sorts, gobbling up bottles of the vintage classics from the 1970s and 1980s which most remind me of being an impressionable child and teen looking to the chic cultivated women in my life's orbit for aesthetic direction and guidance on etiquette, elegance etc. I'm caught between a rock and a hard place though: do I buy the oldest vintage juice I can afford and risk it arriving in a totally turned state OR do I take a 50/50 gamble on the contemporary formulation of a classic fragrance, already knowing in advance that it won't compare to the older variation and may disappoint horribly? I'm going with the latter just to give my wallet a rest and have some cheap thrills. 😄Thanks for this video, I love the topic of vintage fragrances and will enjoy any discussion of them.

Good in pointing out the distinct profiles of Opium: mossy/dark/boozy plum. I think it has the perfected version of the spicy accord found common with Cinnabar, KL, etc. Coco has further refined it though.
Dune on the other hand has that same wonderful base as with Must de Cartier especially in the parfum version. Spectacular ambery oceanic perfume with anisic nuances.
I also am fascinated with you mentioning Dolce Vita. I do think that it’s be more successful only if it wasn’t overshadowed by FdB. To me, DV is better, warmer, cozier and fuller in drydown.

I just picked up a 60ml, 80° splash version of the Eau de Toilette for $34. 🤩💥 I'm guessing it's between 1977 and 1981 production. I can't wait to compare it to the original Estee Lauder Cinnabar minis I have from 1978-1982. I still need an old Youth Dew to try, which Opium is apparently based on. Most people don't know the original Youth Dew was bottled in the rectangular bottle. I believe EL made a Youth Dew intense type flanker before Cinnabars release too.

@@Persolaise It's gorgeous. Not as intense or spicy as Cinnabar, which in my opinion is quite dry. Opium is more complex. I only tried a little bit from the stopper, dabbed on my wrist. I believe it's a 1982 Charles of The Ritz bottle according to the batch code on the bottom. I get more of the sweet florals like Jasmine and Rose as well as the mandarin and plum whereas Cinnabars florals in my opinion seem relegated to Carnation. Amazing for a 40 year old spash. It is like 90+% full though.

Hi Mr. P - Sujata here. Since my comment below, I've acquired a vintage bottle of Dune EDT from a trusted seller. I have no reason to think there is something wrong with the perfume itself - so it must be me! I can't stand the stuff! All I get is a cheesy after shave that takes a long long time to dry down to something sickeningly sweet. My husband tried it and ended up trying hard to wash it off but it's very strong and lingered and lingered. I'm a bit stumped at my reaction to it because I know how many people just adore Dune, especially the vintage version...but then again I can't stand Dior's Poison either...it's that strong anise/licorice note...ugh!
