Since the White House changes occupants pretty frequently, each president has spent loads of money redecorating the building, which is estimated to be worth about $400 million. Donald Trump has spent the most of any president so far-- almost $2 million for things like wallpaper, rugs, gold decor, and a $13,000 conference table. But Barack Obama spent only a little less, while others like George W. Bush have spent $500,000 on formal china, and Bill Clinton spent over $300,000 on just one room. Some of the Trump Administration’s most notable changes include renovations to the White House grounds, like when Melania Trump helped design a brand new Rose Garden and 1,200-square-foot tennis pavilion. The First Lady even made changes to the White House’s historic bowling alley.
Some of these presidents pay out of pocket, especially when it comes to redecorating the private residence. Historical foundations sometimes also foot the bill, like for when Michelle Obama spent over $400,000 restoring historic Bellangé furniture from 1817. The White House is filled with expensive antiques and even strange rooms that you might not even know exist, like a game room and 42-seat family movie theater where presidents can request any movie they like. The building also has an entire room full of expensive china, and another full of priceless silverware. He had it shipped back to the US, but where in the US? He didn't go "art shopping" in France. He had these items removed from our diplomatic residence walls. White House furniture and draperies, etc., are kept in warehouses and new occupants can choose some things from those instead of buying new. The presidential desk, for instance, is chosen from antiques we already have in storage. Much is donated, too.

By opting to spend more lavishly, on projects like this, but not disclosing the specific amount of each purchase, he could make heaps of money disappear without anyone even knowing its gone. Several other presidents have spent well over two the million dollars, or nearly that, even without inflation, updating and upgrading the White House especially to their tastes. The list includes, but is not limited to, Chester A arthur, Theodore roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, FDR, Truman, JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy, Nixon, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, Obama and... yuck... JILL BIDEN with her very gotty taste.
They really should only get to touch the private personal areas, everything else should be done by a committee that stays the same and has no affiliations.
Trump actually did speak to the committee that is in charge of repairs/decor. No one was really keeping up with repairs. He and the First Lady did a lot of restoration that was needed and repairs that were long over due. As far as the decor, they basically switched furniture, paintings, etc. around and he even paid for a few items, not sure exactly which ones. Everything was long over due. It looks a lot better.
The White house curator is the one how desides what happens to the basement & first floor, but de 2nd & 3rd are the private floors & the family can choose whatever they want since all the historic things are below those floors.

the furniture replacement of some of the room takes place every 4 years ,so the tours of people visiting can mock on every presidential wife´s bad taste. Upgrading systems like heating and cooling, a fresh coat of paint, and flooring is not decorating its maintenance and should be paid for by the taxpayers. Any other changes should be paid for by the new occupants and taken with them when they go.
Notice that they don't say who actually paid for it. If they paid for it themselves, it's their own business. If taxpayers paid for it, it's different.
ABSOLUTELY NOT. The White House is like a business' corporate office. Jackie Kennedy set up the WH Historical Association to bring the house up to the standard you see today. @Sally Sagadin, just so you know the Rose garden only had 6 rose bushes left from the Jackie Kennedy area. 60 years took a toll on the entire garden. The garden now has over 60 rose bushes some of which are named after JFK and the Pope. The garden was beautifully and elegantly done.
The Trumps also made improvements on the landscape as well. It really doesn’t matter how much was spent because he put the money to good use. He has also donated all his pay checks as President to different needed funds for the people.He will not be living off tax payers for he has declined to receive his salary as a former President.

The changes any president makes are never necessary beyond maybe the Leisure activity changes. But it's there so each President has a place that feels like their personal home.
Well none are necessary but many help. Alot of the White is very old. Notice. Each president updated only the rooms they are mostly to use out of 135 rooms. Second each president chooses an item or room to restore. I know for Obama. He made a point to restore museum worthy rooms like paintings and the dining room. In terms of rugs. Yh that is necessary when you consider a rug takes 5 to 10 years of traffic. Its only healthy to change it and furniture from 1800s....Yh.... my back aint got time for that

Yes, it has been said that it was "probably" being returned to a museum. But when a museum curator reclaims art that has been on loan, it is usually handled carefully, packed in a crate and wheeled out. They don't usually just grab valuable art and just walk carelessly out the door with it like that. At least qualified museum curators don't.
