I remembered my cousin playing this a lot. every time I went to visit him, he was playing this. I liked watching it and it looked fun. He died in a car accident a couple years later. I never asked him what the game was called and so I never got to experience the actual gameplay. After years of searching ‘fighting games with mushrooms’, I found this video. I was so happy finding the game I loved since I was 6 years old, a child. Now I’m 18 and I’m going to play it now :)

I allways tried to start again. But everyone know that the game changed so much.
What made the game so massive big in the days was the community. PQs,party grind, families, many active guilds. And it was also one if the first fully online mmos in the early 2000s
I think everyone who played activly back in these days, cannot start again now because its soooo boring for us veteran maplers, the true explorers :p
Also we grew. Only thing i have time for is MapleM. And i enjoy it, even if its lacks massive content. But i mean its god damn maple for phone. That was like an untold myth in 2005-2010+ that at some point we will have a maple for our pocket.

Back in the days 90% of the players used to hang out with everyone in-game, one of the most populated zone was Henesys and the sub-map Maya’s House which people hangin around were called “Henehoes”, and that’s something that isn’t coming back. The game isn’t a social thing anymore since people only cares about numbers, MapleStory used to be an amazing game to make Online Friends and have a lot of fun and laughter, nowadays is nothing but a grinding 24/7 game.

No. It wasn't. In that time people EVER was trying to improve the best equipment. And it was a lot HARDER to do, because the drop materials was a lot scarce, and you need to make business. I remember times when it was 3, 4 scrolls of 10% DEX on some equipment, and you need to make money, and sometimes the bet was just hard. Being on FM 4, 5 hours/day. But was a GOOD game to do that. Finding scrolls on market, making investment and being an hardcore player to do, whatsoever, something like a 130 attack in 2 hand sword. THIS is funny, and your cash won't pay for your courage. I remember being one of the players on my server (Brazil) when you were recognizable by your equipment, strength and being a nice with everyone person.

That actually happens in every old mmorpg that got reborn or still exist nowadays.
      Ragnarok online, perfect world, etc.
They all only care about damage, items, etc. Not social game anymore. I miss the era of where game become a social media..
It's like.. In early 2000 until 2013 I think. That's the era when online game is fun because it is like another world. The player like dive into the game and become a part of that world.
Not only online games on application. But also those Facebook games. Ninja saga, pet society, farmville, fishville, etc.
Ahh I missed the golden era of online game..
Now, online game player only care about the looks of the character, stats, money, and items. The chat is full with ad spam. Or toxic people.
Back then, the possibility of people got their boy/girlfriend from online game is still high. I mean not that high, but at least higher than today.
That's why there are plenty of anime about getting your couple from online game or.. relationship between opposite gender in online game. Such as Sword Art Online. Or Log Horizon. These anime obviously got inspired by the early 2000 mmorg games like Ragnarok Online and Maple Story. These things are beautiful. The interactions between player.

Man the word "cape" reminds me of this game. I will never forget the days of 5 years old me playing PQs without fully understanding English, it was so magical and so fun. In my first time that I've played it after years that I didn't play, I was going to Lionheart's Castle, and when I saw it was empty it was so sad for me, the music there even increased this feeling (you OGs will surely remember that people used to party up against these crocodiles). Also seeing PQ empty was so sad too. Nexon absolutely destroyed party-play in this game. I never enjoyed a game more than this game, it's heartbreaking what has been done to this game, it isn't even allowed to be called adaption since I'm sure that every generation would like to party-play, we are social creatures.

Recently came back after 10+ something years & the game is purely solo grinding for levels now. I mean ffs, I’m only 3 days in & I'm level 147 already. The quests make sure you’re occupied alone & also take you away from interaction.
No interaction with people needed. Parties aren’t required for 99.9% of the gameplay.

I played this game back in 2006-2009. I have such fond memories of it. The music was always so relaxing, especially after a stressful day at school. Specifically remember the relaxing music in the Slime trees and killing tree stumps in the mountain place, forgot the name, I was able to level grind in those two places. I was an ice/lightning mage.
Every now and then I look up this game to listen in on the nostalgic sounds. I don't know if I can ever get back into it. Too much wishing I could go back to the old days, but I'll always have happy memories with this game.

I want modern maple to succeed. I play OSM private server (3rd job is max) and miss the journey from each job. I love how each job has some advantage over the other and different builds and fun stuff can be done. Archers having higher accuracy and range can train on ludi mobs earlier from ranged platforms, sins and f/p mages can kill lycanthropes who can drop ilbis early due to their single target nature and weakness to fire. F/p mages can do a different stat build to kill high lvl mobs early using poison breath, you can hp warrior be level 50 and kill anything you want with Power Guard. Page/White Knights can go early freeze builds to save tons on pots. I myself am a Dragon Knight who looks forward to the priests who want to party because Hyper Body and Spear Busters high single target damage. You can simply just be an islander and join that community of people. OSM has a special ranking for some of the weird builds (STR Mage XD)
I think these intricacies made maple special and highly miss them. Modern Maple I just log on to carry lotus/damien/HMage on reboot (Stopped playing before flames). The ability to branch off and do weird stuff appeals to me. Lukless mages, dexless warriors, etc. (you need luk to wear mage gear, you need dex for warriors to hit mobs). I'd love some sort of hybrid between this as I do love a lot of the new classes in maplestory, or at the very least I love the new hairstyles and cashshop items. Though I also think some classes have become way too flashy. Classes now are so homogenized (warriors having flash jumps, dps is trying to be balanced so everyone does the same amount of dps to a boss, formula of full map atk + mobing skill + bossing skill, no real disadvantages between classes, no need to get a bishop to HS, paladin for CO, Archer for SE etc...)
I played WoW Classic Servers and love them over Modern WoW, I played Oldschool Runescape and love it over RS3 and now maple following the same trail. I love the game enough to write something like this, but at the same time sad the modern game has moved away from me and I'm just wasting my time typing this.

    @CallMeHector Před 5 lety +2

This is something I posted on another video talking about the same topic:
I played before the first anniversary and gotta say, there’s a LOT of things that has been improved, yet with the changes, other problems had come.
    1) I was happy with the new experience curve. Back in the days, it was frustrating to work SO hard for weeks just to level up one level an get 3 miserable skill points. And most skills would require 30 SP to max out.
Now it’s easier to level up... but WAY freaking easy. So much, that it doesn’t represent a challenge anymore. You’re too strong, monsters are weak and they give a ton of exp.
    2) For me, the skill system was always messy. 3 skill points per level were too little to feel any sense of progression. Plus, you had to leave some skills because the skill points you received were not enough. Yet I could consider it challenging as well (because you had to chose which skills you'll play with) and also it allowed you to replay any job.
Now you can almost max them all out with, like, 20 SP each (some of them 10 SP!). The sense of progression is better but skills might get old too fast. I like the skill rework tho.
    3) Moving through the world was a thing. Some quests required you to board a ship and that took like 20 minutes. 20 minutes were you did nothing but wait, or try to kill the crimson barlrogs and die. Some other places, like the towers, were exhausting. Not to mention that if you died, you had to do it all over again. Yes, there were faster ways to move like scrolls and cabs, but they could get expensive (and we were not swimming in messo like nowadays). All and all, the Maple Wolrd felt alive and well connected. It was kind of hard to move sometimes but the exploration was always fun - you know, it was a game mechanic. Hidden streets and deep maps had some magic touch.
Today, there’s much more maps and the world is richer with many new ways to move.
    .
I find this three issues (leveling, skills and maps) to have the changes that solved many of the old Maple’s problems, while creating new ones.
    1) Now you level up so fast, that you don’t require any potions, nor equipment. Why would you get an equipment that you’ll stop using in less than ten minutes? (For levels 10-30). Plus the drop rates are much higher. You’ll get a lot of equipment to sell, a lot of free potions and a lot of money that won’t spend, creating inflation. Which you could say it doesn’t matter cause players don’t sell stuff to each other anymore, but if we are not going to use the messo system, why does it even exist? I mean, it’s nonsense for players to trade stuff. Most of the time, a monster would drop JUST what you’re looking for (equipment, potion, throwing star, etc). If they don’t, you can just -insanely- upgrade your equipment until monsters drop what you need.
    2) Back in the days there was variety. A Warrior was like the opposite of a Mage. While thieves had avoidabilty, bowmen had accuracy. Skill and Stat Points used to make a huge difference. Now, skill trees have the same type of skills. All clases have an AOE skill, a skill that makes them move faster or jump higher, a skill that gives the defense they need, a skill that group the monsters, etc, etc. In an attempt to make classes balanced between each other, they made them all the same, but with a few tweaks here and there, removing the need to complement classes betwen each other. Now, all of the classes can be played solo.
So yeah. Maple is more of a single experience rather than a gridding-with-friends game.
    3) “But that can’t be wrong, right? I mean there’s a ton of quests and maps! Skyrim does that too”. Yeah but in Skyrim you don’t move that fast, you get to see the environments, to involve in the story behind every quest. In new Maple, traveling is WAY EASIER and there are more teleport gates. Not to mention the guide teleport or that some quests would insta-teleport you to a new map. And I get it: bigger map means bigger distances. But now the map is skippable. There is no exploration anymore because it’s not needed. The world is less exciting and sometimes you get to miss areas because they’re not useful for questing or useful for leveling (like the pig beach, that still there for some reason and it’s not a hidden street anymore). Not to mention that some new maps share the same monster level range, making them worthless once you passed those levels.
    .
    IN CONCLUSION:
I believe you can’t relate to Maple anymore: it doesn’t represent a challenge anymore; you don’t get to meet new friends (IF you get to find any other player on the same map) because community is dead since you don’t need partners; and the maps are repetetive or skippable so there’s nothing to discover.
I’d say that Maple Story has a more casual approach. Is it worth playing it on 2019? Yeah, maybe. Just not for me.

@@rabbitspeed9 my badly made ice lightning mage was somewhere between lv 90 and 112 when big bang hit.

I have not played in several years at this point. My anti-virus detects game-guard as a virus, and if I try to use a 3rd party program to map controller inputs to keyboard such as using DPad to walk, and mapping skills to directions on thumbsticks, Guess what happens? gameguard thinks it's a bot/hack and crashes my whole damn computer back to the bios. my AV detects that it can do that, and automatically deletes gameguard and the game won't launch.
Plus it wound up being too much of a time-sink. I still miss the game.... I was more than half way through temple of time's quests... the 999 ones, I was in the 3rd set of enemies, and that's when I finally stopped playing.

    @ThaoMiy Před 5 lety +5

I think the Maplestory of today has became too complicated, the pace of the game became too fast,
although the changes (potentials on equip, that you can forge your own armour/ mix your own pots) aren't bad.
You can't really chill and enjoy the game in your own pace as it used to be.
The number of confusing classes (do you really need that many?), systems etc. just puts pressure on you to take as much time as possible to lvl up characters. Not everyone has the time for it and players who know this game for 10 years are now adults.
Even though lvling became easier, you feel quite lonely in this game because of the missing exitement of the former community
(and it's a bad development that there is no FM anymore, one additional missing social aspect).
I would recommend new players to start playing on a private server - before trying the original Maplestory of today.

EDIT: I actually think if people just start playing again and find each other, at some new hanging spot to socialize (what indeed the old MapleStory was all about) - it could definitely come alive again!! Just start playing again, meet up & have some fun!
It definitely is different then the good old days! But I must say I started again recently (after my account was deleted due to merges years ago), and although you level really quickly (already lvl 89 after a few days) - I still like the game and the interaction between players and they added some really nice things to the game. Yes it's not the same (FM is gone, so is the community a bit), but I encountered some old (& new) players to play with and talk to, and that's really nice - reminds me of the past. If you are looking for the good old days solely (Henesys is still a small hanging spot, at the market), don't start again - but if you are open to the world of Maple Story and it changes, definitely give it a try! The pathfinder class is really nice I think, but it's because I used to be a bowman too and it's quite similar. If you want, add me (Saliziia) - I'm still looking for more active players! :3

I think that there are some legitimate arguments for a pre-bb MapleStory server and the current playerbase that calls it all nostalgia isn't seeing the whole picture. If Nexon managed to pull something like that it could see a resurgence in playerbase like Reboot and the real biggest issue, the lack of community/multiplayer gameplay, could be partially fixed.

I've spent so many years of my middle school/high school life playing this game... I've been feeling nostalgic for it lately but now I work 40 hours a week and I know that I won't have the time to fully get into it again. 😔

Make sure you start off with a Jett. It just goes uphill from there :)

Honestly, 2006-2009(before big bang update) are the golden years of maple. Itll never be the same. Maybe Nexon will bring some people back if they made a private server for nostalgic versions like 0.62 and 0.83 but the reality is that most people wont even hear about it since they've left this game a long time ago.

Does the game still have massive lag whenever you try to enter a new room? I remember there was a lot of delay a year or two ago due to the lack of server support.

I played for a few weeks until I got a nexon message “you are temporary banned for using illegal programs”
It was pretty fun while it lasted but it wasn’t that feeling of true magic anymore.

How do you play Maplestory from another country. When i try to play from Japan on GMS I can't even download the game they won't allow me. Anyone have any idea? I've been a Beta player since it started. Haven't played in 10 years.

Is there a gear barrier to someone with old gear (cra, tyrant, etc) to do the newer endgame content?
I know they added the arcane stuff when 5th job was introduced-- has that grind been changed at all and are there any others?

Not worth it...if it was before the big bang update, I'd play it again...
