  • This story is set in 1930, at the time when French colonial rule in Indochina is ending. A widowed French woman who works in the rubber fields, raises a Vietnamese princess as if she was her own daughter. She, and her daughter both fall in love with a young French navy officer, which will change both their lives significantly.

Just remember what the Vietnamese had before becoming a French colony which is the Nguyen Dynasty that ironically enough owed it's survival and resurgence over it's rival Tay Son Dynasty to French assistance who repaid it by persecuting Catholic missionaries and their Vietnamese Catholic converts that prompted Napoleon III to send a massive military expedition that included Habsburg Spanish colonial troops to subdue the Nguyen Dynasty.

That's Vietnam, a tragic story. French came to "civilise" by hoarding everything for France and gave nothing in return. And then they even cooperated with Japan in WW2 to create a man-made famine. While some French were quite noble, the most of them treated Vietnamese like untermenschen. A rare film, which I liked a lot when it depicted from a woman's point of view.

🤔 Vietnam was always wanted and invaded by somebody. First colonized by China for 1000 years then France for 100. China was/still is the worst invader because they kept expanding south, taking land that belonged to Vietnam on old maps like Yunnan and Canton and now all South China Sea. That's why Yunnan's cuisine is like Vietnam's, rice noodles with fresh herbs instead of wheat noodles in rest of China. And why Cantonese sounds more like Vietnamese than Mandarin. Also, if it wasn't for China/USSR military aid to Vietcong and Communist propaganda, at least South Vietnam would have been free and Democratic like South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan instead of the whole country united in a dirty, backward, corrupt $hit hole as it is now where citizens all begging to immigrate to the US and west.

@@cykablyat287 : 🤔 True, because South Vietnam didn't have the time to develop into a fully independent and Democratic country with cease fire, defined borders, fair elections like South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan eventually did. But anything is better than the dark Communist days and decades that came afterwards when *true oppression* set in. We're talking no religion at all, hard labor *"re-educational camps"* for most intellectuals, their land and property confiscated and rewarded to Vietcong officials, families forced to move to *"new economic zones",* the banning of nearly all books, music. No gatherings of more than a few people at a time, neighbors forced to spy and report on each other. Preferential treatments and promotion of the children of northerners in school, jobs, housing, etc.

You high or what? It was the law for the pandemic time, and most of the time if there bunch of people gather in one damn place for no reason will ended up as a disaster we have an example disaster hallowen night in iteawon in 2022 or just simple pissing of every body and creating traffic chaos? About coruption name me a country that has almost zero coruption in the fucking SEA region? AND TELL ME DO ANY COUNTRY LEAVE THE CONSIDERATE TRAITOR GOV PROPAGANDA ALONE? Most of the book were ban was mainly P*rn and the south propaganda and the those song you thougth it was ban from the saigon we called nhạc vàng(man the nhạc vàng is so cringe) some song were band bit the rest is still exist for a pretty long time some got remix and some got forgotern( like i was saying it's so cringe)
The education camp was needed tto prevented the ex arvn officer trying to making an uprising(hoàng cơ minh is an example) and most of it like i mention before most of the people who was sending to re education camp was ARVN,Police officer of the saigon regime, soldier who involed in war crimes
And depending on ranks or the crime they could be returnd to home after a few weeks or a 10 years, the property is yes divended to the new gov offcial depending on thier ranks and contribute and it was almost the same because most of them were live in apartment meant for family 2-3 people like every post war time in every country but we do not rip every thing they has but most of them were not fit in the new enviroment, porvety is massive in the 80 because we only have 2 years of peace after the war and then we imidiate found ous self in two more wars for survirval in both frontier and lot of embargo till 1991 now you tell me in if the saigon regime was that good then why most of thier own people decide to joining the north or trying to claim thier own independen in the central high?
