What would you do if you were trapped in a toy factory and the toys came to life? I'm not talking in a fun Toy Story way, I mean in a Five Nights At Freddy's you are trapped and they want to END you kind of way. This is Poppy Playtime and I think there is a lot of lore hiding in the depths of this toy nightmare. Today I'm going to explain how I think Poppy may NOT be our big bad and what may still be lurking in the shadows.

Honestly the first thing to notice would be the colors
Why those specific colors?
Same went for the tape
Even if just barely the color stood out
And the attention span would go to that immediately
It’s quite a nice and interesting thing
However it tends (from my experience) to lead to being overwhelmed in the opposite sequence
Where everything is closed in and looks alike
The vent chase
Even by watching everyone play it and having the route ingrained in my head, I know if I played it myself I would still get overwhelmed and die over and over.

Also, in the note ‘disappeared’ is spelt wrong and ‘we’re’ is punctuated wrong. You would think the employees there would have basic grammar skills.

Matt, you didn’t mention the poster about adopting for fostering orphans and how the company encouraged its employees to do so. I think they wanted their employees to bring in orphans for their experiments.

I'd like to point out the double meaning in "You opened my case", the case being a mystery case or crime case. Poppy was probably the one to send the note to the player, and now the player is solving her... well, whatever happened to her and the factory.
I kinda like how everyone just assumed that huggy wuggy was exp.1006 just to be bamboozled in chapter two
The way huggy wuggy doesn't kill the player instantly really shows he's doing it for sport
It's a security measure (hopefully it's supposed to be that who knows) and it's aware enough to toy with you

I think huggy cannot instantly start hunting the player as much as it would like to start hunting (maybe due to some kind of conditioning? but you hear on the security tape at the start something along the lines that they have something "special" for intruders that can avoid or bypass the normal security measures). I think huggy sabotaged the security systems then the clocks so it could hunt the staff, since initially its almost inviting and aiding you in getting deeper inside, only after the catbee does it really go after you, and only does it show some intensity to its actions once you are in the vents
Also at first he is just walking, then he is faster in the vents, then he actually starts running at you when you're near poppy. Its either he wants you to find poppy, or he doesn't want you to. Kinda weird right

the most horrifying thing about the “unknown” tape is you can hear the employees getting murdered, you can hear them banging on the safe room the scientist is in while you can hear some screams in between. chills man

Right now as of chapter 2 released, some things became clear and some things we can say as incorrect.
-Poppy isn't the first experiment. But what was right is Poppy tried to help us and was quite nice at first. (But became sinister at the end of ch2)
-Experiment 1006 isn't Poppy nor Huggy. But is the overlooked image from the unknown tape (ie the animatronic hand with human bone attached) which as the name implies the prototype. (or atleast one of the first, what we can assume the first that was successful)
-The toys have organic material, which is true. (both ch1 and 2 shows this)
-and based on ch2 Huggy is actually one of the more obedient ones... (if that thing is obedient, then I don't wanna see what are the one who aren't)
So I think we can assume, the prototype (1006) will be the true enemy based on the experiment logs and what it did during ch 2. I think it will be the amalgamation of all toys we've defeated, and just to make it safe... After we beat it, I think poppy will control it to prevent us from leaving.
huggy wuggy in ch 1 is the security for the factory's lobby, in one of the clips it says tell you the "security" will deal with any trespassers, and it points that huggy wuggy being so obedient would definitely follow out gaurd dog rules like that. the wuggies that arent obedient are sent the wack a mole area

I was watching Jacksepticeye do his playthrough and in the comments someone sauid that, after we reset the power and Huggy goes missing he doesn't attack us and just watches as we go through the factory. The second we start the machines turn on so we can build Cat-Bee and open the door is when he attacks because he's scared the abuse of the toys is going to start back up again and he's trying to stop that from happening. I think that theory makes sense, what do you guys think

There's one extra disturbing fact. If huggy is alive, that means that while he stands like a statue in the beggining, he's just pretending to not be alive, and he's watching you all the time.

I feel kinda bad for MatPat and his desire to solve things like Fnaf, because it's obvious that Scott is/was planning to create twists and turns that completely threw any attempt to solve the lore out the window.

@@aquamarinerose5405 Yeah but look at it from the perspective of another Indie Dev. He is quite literally helping them brainstorm complex and entertaining lore for the games. That's kinda why I liked that he has relaxed on the Fnaf content and started looking at other games. He's giving them a helping hand essentially.

Now that chapter 2 is out we know EXP-1006 is the creepy hand thingy that took Mommy’s corpse that uses dolls body parts to build his self and is said to be very intelligent Which is probably going to be the antagonist in a future chapter and I think for chapter 3 Bee-Cat is going to be the antagonist while EXP-1006 is going to be the big bad for the final chapter?
Poppy being a companion character would certainly be far more unique and interesting than just being another generic Creepy Evil Doll
my fear is that if she becomes a companion character she will be revealed to be the true villian in the second to last chapter and be the final boss. This might not be the case but many games seem to go with that route of your companion or guide either being the true villian, or will turn evil.

I can't even imagine how terrifying this game would be in VR. Also, idk if I'm the only 1 who noticed but if you watch the Maintenance tape video where it shows how to take care of Poppy and if you pause it right at 0:50, it says LET ME GO multiple times.

Might be worth mentioning: When 1006 is close to killing you he slows down a bit, especially in situations where you're trapped. This could either mean he's trying to toy with you, or could be attempting to lead you to his master.
it could also be like a form of hesitation? maybe these creatures still have a form of consciousness, even if it is very little
I'd say toying with you as, like was said, it's the only one that doesn't need to eat and kills for fun.
I think it is the developers so the game would be a little easier.
I've been struggling with the idea that Poppy is controlling Huggy...because if she can do that, why doesn't she just manipulate Huggy to open her case? He clearly has extraordinary litheness and agility and could reach her area, as the player sees in the chases. Unless maybe Poppy's case requires the strength of the GrabPack to open, and Huggy isn't necessarily that strong? I dunno, that doesn't seem right from what we know so far.
I'm favoring the idea that Poppy is indeed an ally (for now, at least, never know with these sort of games) and Huggy is not under her control, but either acting independently as a sadistic monster or placed in the role of guarding Poppy by the true villain.
The slow down could simply be a game mechanic to keep chases slightly more fair/less frustrating, and not be a plot device.
@@Lanoom that's an interesting take, so it's probably more the first thing. In all honesty it is probably a game design feature but thinking of it in terms of lore is interesting to me.

I'm surprised that Mat didn't pick up on some of the other clues:
1: The misspellings on the letter given to the player in the beginning
2: The posters about the factory working with adoption agencies and encouraging employees to adopt and bring kids
3: The low price of the tour tickets encouraging even more kids to come
4: The poster recommending the workers to consume 4,000 calories a day
5: The talk of a failsafe security system that matches with Huggys behaviors
6: The scattered messages in the vents written in crayon
I'm probably missing stuff, but this is all what I noticed watching other CZcamsr's playthroughs.
He does realize most of these in his play through of the game.
In his playthrough I think he did mention/consider a lot of things he didn;t mention in this theory. He probably just keeping it aside for when to make it work in a continuing theory

Due to the mention of adoption agencies, I think that orphans are adopted and used as experiments, ripping out numerous amount of organs to make them LIVE as a toy

I think when things started to get really messy with the orphan experiments, Stella/Poppy, tried to intervene and was locked... Maybe she did cooperated to be Poppy but didnt expect the creator to use unwilling subjects like kids for experiments... To me, the one talking at the death screens is the creator that might be lurking around and Poppy would helo the player navigate the factory

I just wanted to share something about huggy that I noticed:
When we enter huggy's room there is a small sign in front of him with
his description and creation date (1984), next to the date there is a dash
implying that a death date exists (kinda like dates on graves) , this could mean that
he IS a living organism and will die at some point.
This is what I was thinking. When Markiplier played it, he was freaked out and asking why would they imply a death date. And my mind went straight to this theory and because he is an organism and will die at some point

Everybody is forgetting about the security tape... The guy says that there are motion sensors which trigger security and call the cops but he also says that's only the "tame" security measure. I think Huggy Wuggy was sentient and wanted to help us (hence him finding the key for us) but once we went towards poppy, Huggy Wuggy's security measure was triggered and he couldn't control himself. This may have been a "Less Tame" measure which would make more sense to the sudden mood swing HW has. The rest of the game will most likely have them try to help us but be triggered by an urge to keep poppy from being taken.

I'm always impressed by any horror game that legitimately tries to be a game first and horror second. Too many horror games seem to think that walking around a dark space is gameplay enough as long as you get spooked, but the mechanics of this game make it an intriguing gameplay experience that also spooks you

i have a theory that the ex-employee came back because they recognized the writing from the letter was of the child they adopted when they were working under Playtime Co. who they learned to genuinely love but lost and to this day blamed themself for. as a result they resigned to grieve and move on properly to live out the rest of their life in peace. but after the news about employees mysteriously disappearing broke out from the same company they formerly worked for, they had a sudden inkling that Playtime Co. was involved in their child's disappearance too.
That’d be an excellent twist to work in, but until we find out more about the player’s character, it can’t be worked in.
Fun fact: if you reverse the Vintage Poppy Doll commercial’s audio then you could hear a hidden disturbing messages within Poppy’s speech
MatPat isn't making theories at this point, he's literally breaking down how to write the rest of the story of the game for the writers and developers. Literally helping them by brainstorming the ideas for them.

To add to this theory: turning the employees into the experiments seems like it'd be tough to cover up since they're adults who would likely have friends and loved ones who might try to look into what happened to them. However, the tapes mention orphans, and how the company has a huge emphasis on them. Well, who would be prime candidates for experiments with few ties to the outside world meaning fewer questions on if they went missing? Orphaned children.
i thought from the beginning that they were using orphans but i thought they were using them to make poppy, but the experiment idea makes more sense because they most likely mass produced poppy and they defiantly didn’t “kill” that many orphans.
Certainly would explain why all the broken toys (Bron, Catbee, and Boogie Bot) all have blood splatter leaking from them.... I suspect that is where the orphans went: into toys while maybe adults were made into the larger ones? I mean, there is only one 9 foot tall Huggy Wuggy and lots of 3 foot ones.

I just want to point out how huggy wuggy never attacks you right until you CREATE A TOY. You see him through out the game with a lot of chances to hug u but does not.
Like if it reminds and angers the human mind within huggy about how they were changed to be what they are now.

I love the theory, and I definitely think you have something here, however: I would like to direct your attention to the poster right next to the stairs in the Toy Maker room. That poster shows that the company made a point of having their employees adopting Orphans. I think most of the experiments where actually done on these poor children that unfortunately no one would notice if they went missing.
Since you need consent to make the poppy dolls, then yeah, it makes sense that they would use the kids to make more poppy dolls which is still jarring to imagine.

I was just re watching this after ive watch the play through of the chapter 2 game and it hit me that 1006 sounded familiar at 5:45 and that's because in the new chapter it's actually the claw as revealed in one of the tapes after beating mommy long legs.

another thing that suoports the “Protagonist is a Doll” theory is your footsteps. They clank when you walk. Either the protagonist brought loafers to this adventure or hes definitely a toy.

If Poppy told us that everyone is pretty much dead because of her, and it's obvious that the toys don't want us there (because they want to kill us) then, and before we went to the factory, Poppy was still on that cristal case, then who sent the letter telling us yo get to the flower where we could find Poppy?

I also noticed that when you zoom into Poppy's eyes, you can see like the sides of her eyes are a bit bloody or in red like actual human eyes, so there's a chance that MatPat's theory about Stella being inside of Poppy is prolly true. Idk if its actually blood I just noticed it.

Also I’d just like to add, Huggy is really slow all throughout the game, whether it’s slowly stalking you or chasing you in the vents. It’s almost like he doesn’t want to kill you and he eventually leads you to the poppy. He doesn’t need sustenance like the others.
To further prove this theory about huggy being more than just a sentient toy, you see that there’s saliva dripping from his jaws during the jump scare when you get caught 👍

Pretty surprised there was no mention of the orphans we hear about in one of the tapes and on a poster. I feel like the factory used them, not the employees, to create the living toys. There's nothing better than kids that "no one cares about", with perfect sized organs.
i think the company might've used both the employees and the orphans, my theory is that the adoption centre that playtime co get the kids from is getting skeptical about the mass amounts of children that they keep on adopting and so they banned playtime co from adopting. with the shortage of human sacrifices in exchange of toys, playtime co has to go to the last resort. killing the employees for money.
