But get in the waves, try and bodysurf, having a swim around on a sandy beach that tapers nicely as it goes out - it's fucking money son. You might lose your up from your down for a little longer than if you were sober, but you'll be cool if you can swim. Religious experience.

I nearly drowned off a beach in Israel. First day ever abroad on a business trip. Started walking way out and the water was only up to my waist, then it just dropped off. Lost my footing, went under and took in a ton of water, then the current kept dragging me out, waves crashing on my head. A nearby surfer saw this happening and just looked away.
The things your mind does when you are in that situation is wild. I don't know if it's the adrenaline or what, but the brain processes all the outcomes, brings back memories, lets you see likely results of your death, and so much more all in great clarity and faster than should be humanly possible.
With my last bit of energy, I managed to get one single toe on the area before the dropoff and it was enough to get me up and safe. That being said - please beware of shallow water and assume nothing about a landscape you cannot see.
