  • I had the privilege of meeting the Steve Jobs of the coffee world, Douglas Weber, whose inventions include the EG-1, the Key, and now the Unifilter!
    Is this the portafilter that will change the landscape of the making coffee forever? I think it definitely could be.

    I am super passionate about coffee and educating people on all aspects of this amazing drink. I love bringing the stories back from the other side of the world about how they grow and process the coffee differently in each farm, in each region, in each country. I also love helping baristas around the world make better coffee for themselves, whether they're at home, professional, competitors and or even just venturing out into the wide world of coffee.

    It’s the best quality materials, best design for more efficient extraction, sits perfectly on the table, everything is amazing so that costs money. It’s evolution in coffee culture and everything they produce is the best. The grinders are insane. Bring it on can’t wait to buy the machine.

    I think the original portafilters / baskets actually were ONE piece! I like how it sits flat, no tamp stand needed! I don't like the sharper beveled edge where my funnel sits, the magnets don't grab onto it, and coffee settles there on the ledge. Also due to the thicker metal you need to use paper filters or the holes will clog up and be hard to clean (haven't tried it yet myself, a bit scared :p ) it is easy to clean with the paper bottom filters though, but just rinsing with water leaves coffee oils which accumulate in the corners so a light soap/detergent at least sometimes is definitely still necessary.

    • @Rydecoffeecoach
      @Rydecoffeecoach  Před rokem

      Should be able to soak them in cleaner (which everyone should be doing on regular baskets and portafilters, anyway) they will get all the oils out. Yes, I had some Rancilio and Fiorenzato portafilters that were one piece, but they didn't have built in baskets like the Weber one does. It's the only one I know of that is completely one piece including the precision basket.

    This might be good for those who are seeking espresso nirvana but seriously for $350 for filter or $170 for basket is crazy expensive.
    In consideration you can use a .02c damp paper filter to help with channeling and water flow.
    The only plus I see in this Uni is that it doesn’t bow whilst under pressure which allows for rain fall dispersion.
    Send me one to try and I’ll be happy to share my thoughts on it.

      Hi there! That's ok, it might not be for everyone. But I have tried many different portafilters over the years and I can say unequivocally that the taste is better in a Unifilter. Not by 50% or what have you, but noticeable. Maybe it has something to do with the baskets bulging, not sure. But hey, if it isn't for you that's ok. No need to verbally abuse me though, I'm just reporting on it. I didn't invent and I don't sell it. 👌

  • @Django44
    @Django44 Před rokem +2

    Beautiful design, but - taste improves because of straight sides? (4:58) Is that the claim? If so, please define "..tastes better". "Sweeter" and 'better" are everyday coffee buzzword adjectives. You ought to have challenged him on that Ryd, especially being a barista yourself. Furthermore, he should have offered to do a blind taste test for you. THAT might have been interesting. And, the price is way beyond my reach.

    • @Rydecoffeecoach
      @Rydecoffeecoach  Před rokem

      Agreed, I can challenge them a bit more and I will in the future. I think the bigger claim is that you never have to worry about replacing the baskets when the sides blow (which I've done many times) and basket bulging, as well as higher extraction yield which generally is a data driven way to measure sweetness and balance.

    The Rolex analogy does not work. The reason we still have Rolex watches is because watches are built to be serviced and there is a supply of parts. This portafilter has none of those qualities.
