I LOVE Andrew Graham-Dixon. He's the David Attenborough of art.
Always a joy listening to Andrew Graham-Dixon!! Thankyou Andrew!!
As an artist, painter, in THIS modern age, I'd SO love to have those "friends in high places" now.
Excellent as always from the soon to be knighted (I hope) Mr Graham-Dixon.
Andrew Graham-Dixon is a great man. Watch all his stuff on the BBC, even when it's about something I didn't think I'd be interested in, I end up being interested. His series on American art for BBC is great.
This man is a captivating story teller. I wish he was my history teacher!
he can be, just search is lectures.
Love hearing andrew graham dixon, great find.
Great description of a Great Artist by a great Art Historian!!
Love these! Please, more. MOAR!
Wow, I'd like to hear more stories like this!
I love this channel. thanks Bigthink!
Wow more of this guy thanks
Excellent. More from Andrew please.
Fascinating.
He was a troubled man but he had a remarkable artistic vision.
Caravaggio of Life sacred and profane
very well done
In addition to discovering Caravaggio, founding opera, and being the principle sponsor to Galileo, Cardinal Del Monte was reknown for his canned peaches in light syrup.
id suppose its easy to see why , as a standalone the paintings would not hav gone far, yet considering the sociological implications in a world wher that kind of thing was being phased as an active social life, being portrayed through art at the same time as having the connections to those higher up (which observe it), is porbably a major breakthrough in the basis of modern marketing
Art is wonderful.
@PyroTyger well put, thank you Pyro.
here's a topic for meaningful discussion: It's always been interesting to me how intwined politics, religion and community status was, even back in Caravaggio's time - not sure anything has changed, except for the fact that the artist had to work for these elite and espouse their message outright. hmmm, mad marketing genius indeed . . .
Big Think is a very special channel with a lot of varied, interesting and thought-provoking topics covered by able and informed speakers. If you don't have any interest in the subject being discussed (or the speaker,) please move on and don't spam the comments section. It makes it much harder for others to engage in meaningful discussion, and you're dragging the whole channel down as a result.
To me, Caravaggio's life would make a good book/movie adaptation.
I heard the big think tune on a commercial, and now I want to know what it is called
The man Del Monte, he say, ''Yes.''
This blokes brilliant
I've never actually been interested to listen to an art critic until now.
Excluding Jay Sherman of course.
@BrokenBjartur well stated.
Andrew Graham-Dixon is art. I read his bio on his website and there was nothing in his life that is not about art. I am inclined to believe, however, that he was selected by those in high places to be obsessively critical of rare art works and artists. He lacks a certain amount of humanism. Therefore, his interpretation of artwork and artists may not be the same as mine or yours and is therefore, just a peg in the criticism ladder.
this guy reminds me of Steve Coogan
All I am going to say talking about one great artist of all time Caravaggio have nae problems any one you have favoirte Caravaggio painting wonder if you even have one it hard for me I like Cupid, Death of the Virgin etc.
@Terminatification Very smart!
i dint know about carvaggio.... i knew the painting "boy with a basket fo fruit" i remember....
interesting video anyway
I'm a cheese-eating vulgarian.
@TheWfxyz might i suggest you find another channel?
anyone else hear the cop cars in the background in the beginning?
I tried to watch Kaku's physics of the impossible (lower case intentionally), it was piss compared to Carl Sagan's "Cosmos." He seems to assume too much about our future technologies, and most of his ideas seem hasty. Sagan was much more thoughtful, realistic and informative to the common man.
interesting... very interesting.
Where's Michio Kaku? ;(
The Notorious A.G.D. GOAT art critic.
Can we make this into a movie?
@Eysc is that workin' for ya?
Dont know if you saw this one he done.....Who Killed Caravaggio? (BBC). Its on yt
that was fun
Next time a waiter serves me artichokes with butter he better watch the fuck out.
Sheets. Sheet music that is
who is that guy, man I wish i had his voicebox
Why can't people grasp the fact that intelligent people that can teach us a thing or two actually do exist besides Michio Kaku?
Interesting
God I love bigthink.
wow this man is a genius or sutin
Caravaggio!
@BrokenBjartur then why did you take the time to watch?
Michio should get his own channel, so I can subscribe to it.
@cerealkilla4eva very bad wording on my part. i was just posting my opinion that when i see him speak there's just something about the way he comes across that is sort of patronising and unnecesary. and sometimes he dumbs down what he's talking about too much. but generally what he talks about is interesting.
@BrokenBjartur Again, if you cared so little, then why even comment? The content was clearly displayed in the title. Do not insult me with your own ignorance.
Sends him to the hospital... wait what?
@RectumPilum I'm hastily replying to you comment, and hoping to catch you out with my superior intellect!
@NicoleNa666 Very well said. Oftentimes people who I deeply respect become some kind of icon where they are no longer seen for the intelligent person they are but rather some kind of God who people blindly worship. People somehow see it as a threat to great master Kaku's wisdom to show other intelligent human beings on this channel. It will be ok fangirls, Michio will be just as smart and awesome he always was despite other people being allowed to grace "his" channel.
@bigthink Please make these video's louder. I can hardly hear the man, and everything's turned up to max volume.
Yeah.. art.. very interesting.. now explain us why stargates in Milky way has a 39 unique glyphs and stargate from Pegasus galaxy only 36..
magnet for iron... don't miss iron
@bio138 not here because he's a physicist, not an art critic. thank you for playing, but try again next time.
@Consolized His name is Michio Kaku!
And we are not worthy!
@NicoleNa666 who is kaku?
Sounds like the wild west!
DO look the related video at the left: Power of Art: Caravaggio. One of the best art documentaries I've ever seen! /watch?v=2HhbU5FoC-Y
I also recommend the one about Bernini and David from the same series.
@Eysc I'm replying with a witty comment to get some attention!
I Rather Michio Kaku... And I'm actually high while i'm writing this...
THANK GOD they got rid of Michio Kaku
This channel has just become another click bait CZcams channel. This vid was good
Michio Kaku should get his own channel only to get you people off BIGTHINK
@Terminatification debatable.
watch how everyone gets mad that this video is not by michio kaku :L
were is that asian kuku guy
@DeeRaman HOW DARE ANYONE ELSE THINK AND BE PLEASANT TO LISTEN TO, I AM OUTRAGED
Nonetheless... I still liked this video... :)
@spedrick18 hahahaha
that wasn't so marketing genius as much as it was luck....it was a good idea, but without the dealer, it wouldn't have worked
Medieval trickle down economics.
Will be funny to see how the future handles the early 21st century United States. "Now you have to remember that the United States was all crazy in that time. Politically divided and just absolutely filled with fundamentalist and self destructive personalities..." lol
@NicoleNa666 Very well said.
@starliteinfernal OBVIOUSLY you have never taken an art history class. k, night.
@mrlurp think DeNiro
@manonthemount ya who the hell is this guy anyway?
Aubrey De Gray
wait where was the marketing in this? i dont give a shit about mr sensitive plate to face smashing caravagio unless it's to do with marketing ie the title.
I tried to like this guy but I just don't like him the same way I do Dr. Michio Kaku XD
DITTO
@arminask I quickly realize you're probably right, but I won't admit defeat, and accuse you of being racist.
@TheStfu1000 I think you're overanalyzing a bit. It may sound patronizing to you simply because his goal is to explain things to a wider audience who may not comprehend the advanced concepts he talks about as fast as you do. I think he's one of the most welcoming intellectuals and we need more people like him to help raise interest in scientific fields.
@oliverdking how do you not now Michio Kaku..BLASPHEMY!!! famous theoretical physicist.
@NicoleNa666 Fanboy-isms shouldn't change your opinion about anything. Don't be a hipster. :P
NONCE CHEESE
"Testosterone fuelled city being serviced by a vagrant community of prostitutes" *insert slander of modern city of choice*
@TheMDBJJ as opposed to you? I have seen your videos, you must really enjoys guys squirming on the ground together.
@wonszlol How do you know this man is intelligent?
@pafijohn It's practically unthinkable that they would dare to even UPLOAD a video that was not from michio kaku... who would upload a video about an intelligent man talking about art :O
Anyone else got the urge to play Assassin's Creed now?
Does anyone else find his voice to be skull numbingly dull?
No, just you.
I thought at least here would be some intellegent people that wouldnt care about such things as a fucking "thump up" but no these Kaku Fanboys are really ruining the work the other persons are doing.......again, im kinda dissapointet about the Youtbube community.
